My dream kitchen is a swinging door off the dining room that I only have to walk through when I need to find the cook/maid.

One important consideration for kitchen floors--if you actually cook in them--is hardness. Stone and tile floors are murder on your legs and feet. Drop a wineglass and you'll find shards of crystal three rooms over. I would never swap my wood floors for them (plus the wood is gorgeous).
@dev5963

While stone and tile floors look wonderful. As you said, they are horrible on body and glassware but also metal cookware. Drop a jar of jelly on a stone floor and you're scrubbing jelly off the ceiling. Drop on wood or vinyl - it will likely burst but stays floor level. I recently had to remove my 150 yr old wood floors (and floor joists). Because of moisture problems and lack of crawl space, the contractor recommended a slab. NO, NO, NO! I rebuilt with marine grade lumber and had to go with vinyl wood look plank flooring. I'd rather have had wood but sacrifices have to be made when needed. Linoleum or any type of vinyl would be better than stone or tile. Not all was lost. I salvaged as much of the 1.5 in thick, 6 in wide heart pine flooring to use as the island countertop and a farmhouse table (it's a farmhouse).

It's all fun and games until there's a leak from below the sink that you don't notice until it's too late because the wood soaked it. We had to remove 4 square meters of wood floors from the kitchen and put tiles because of this reason. Water and wood floors are a no no for me. (It IS more beautiful, I'll admit that)

When we remodeled our kitchen I stood firm on drawers instead of doors for my lower cabinets. It definitely looks more expensive because it is and the convenience was worth it. I liked that you mentioned aging in place because that is what we intend to do in our house and having drawers is so much easier. No more jumble of Tupperware 😊

I agree about drawers instead of lower shelves. I remodeled a kitchen in the 90s and all lower cabinets were drawers. Loved it.

I specifically asked for a pull out drawer under my farmhouse sink knowing as I get older that I wasn't going to get on my knees to get something from the back of the drawer and I'm so glad I did that.

Hello! You might look for information on universal design, which is the concept of designing spaces for all levels of functionality from the beginning, so no costly retrofits as we age! Hope that helps, and good luck with your project!

My sister redid her kitchen last year. She says the 2 most impactful improvements have been: A. Softclosing (self/silent/closing) hinges on every drawer and door. She says "worth every penny" , "brilliant". she was talked into them, but now says she will never ever go back to ordinary doors. I have to say when I visit they are amazing. Men and women alike seem to love to open and close the "magic" doors and drawers! B. Only drawers (no cupboards) below the benchtops. Combined with the softclose mechanism she says handling heavy items from below is a dream. She's been able to store all her crockery in deep drawers just below the benchtop, which makes it so easy to get at (much better than being in the upper cabinets).

I can't imagine putting marble in a sink, that's just crazy. It's one thing to try to avoid tomato sauce or juice drips on a countertop, but everything goes into the sink. Even if it gets rinsed right away, I bet after a year or two that marble sink would be a hot mess.

I cannot agree with you more about replacing lower cabinets with drawers! The difference! Ah, after three years, my back and my knees still sing all four parts of the "Hallelujah Chorus" every. Single. Time. I open a drawer, reach in, and pull out whatever it is I need.

Cleaning hack for upper cabinets that are open above: unroll a roll of paper towels on them. Spritz lightly so they lay flat. Roll up and dispose when spring cleaning and there goes all the accumulated dust and grease.

Marble sink would be a hard pass for me. The yellowing and staining would be too much for me. I think most people go too small on pendants over kitchen islands when it’s an open concept floor plan. So my kitchen hack is go big on the lighting. I’m not formally trained but have lived in 7 homes, tried a lot of home decor and leaned a lot. Lighting, wood floors and wall mouldings give every space “goods bones” and a jump off point for a stunning space.

I really appreciate that you consider that kitchens are functional work spaces as well as a space in the home for decoration. And that you appreciate that some things are lower maintenance and better if you are deaiing with chronic illness and aging. All three of us in this household have arthritis in their hands to some degree and bad backs, even in middle age. We have to consider maintenance because whatever we do with decoration, it won't work if whe don't have the spoons to clean it and keep it nice.

Spot on about marble countertops. Add wood counter tops to being ugly and getting stains. It is really crazy to have wood around a sink. If someone likes to cook, don't get wood counter tops. I sand and re oil my wood counter top every six months. If I wanted to keep them looking pristine, I would have to sand and re oil every month .

Yes, a marble sink or any other high maintenance material is in my opinion, way too much work. When I am cleaning the kitchen I do not want to have to fret about what will happen to the sink with my cleaning supplies. I imagine never making pasta with red sauce because I am in fear of staining my sink. Not fun.

Great video, Garrett! I would NEVER have a marble countertop or sink. One spilled bottle of red wine and everything is permanently stained! With all the beautiful quartz and porcelain materials that mimic the look of marble or other natural stone, give me these more durable options every time! I redid my kitchen a couple of years ago, and all my lower cabinets are drawers. I LOVE them, and I can reach everything! Just added new floors and opted for LVP. After years of standing on travertine, I love how much more comfortable and easier to clean the wood look vinyl flooring is. Thank you for all your great tips!!! I never thought about the vent hoods, and you're so right! How about people who have a big wreath on their vent hood? It may look pretty, but all I can think about is the dust and grease collecting in it!!! You always bring practicality with your design tips, Garrett, and I love that!!! 🌻🤗🌻 Colleen

I would love an in depth video about vent hoods and which styles go with which kitchen style. Especially high-end vent hoods. I recently went down a vent hood rabbit hole for our kitchen reno and spent a lot of $ on a custom copper hood that we love. However, it seems that plaster wrapped hoods are very popular. Not that I care, mind you because I LOVE what we got, but a video on vent hoods would be entertaining and informative. 🖤

We remodeled our kitchen about 15 years ago…and I put a ton of time into figuring out function and materials. It was my dream kitchen…and still operates wonderfully. It has held up in material and style pretty well! So very worth the time it takes to figure out the details. At the time, stainless sinks were the only thing being put into homes… but I really wanted the beautiful cast iron sink that coordinated with my colors (a light cream). I am not sorry I did, and we have a prep sink in the island to match. Again, very worth the time it takes to plan to get things you love and are timeless.

Thank you for this post. I really wish this had been around before I did my first kitchen renovation. In terms of the kitchen sink, I think the largest, deepest stainless steel single bowl you can fit in your space is very good. You can wash very large items. If you want that double bowl situation, you can buy a large dish pan for under $20 on Amazon. Also keep the corners a bit rounded. The very sharp corners look great, but keeping them clean is a lot of work (I did that and learned the hard way). In terms of cabinet doors, budget also comes into play. Inset doors are gorgeous but more expensive.

Grid racks at the bottom of stainless steel sinks keep the sink from scratching (too much, nothing is perfect). They also are a great way to dry the bottom of something that was just lightly rinsed. Highly recommend them. Our sink came with one, we ordered a second for the other side, it was $100). Marble sinks, in my opinion, are too much maintenance and too expensive for the minimal impact they offer in a complete home, unless, of course, the home is tiny and you see the sink everywhere you look. Save the money and spend it elsewhere where the impact is better felt and seen - like on a boldly coloured dual fuel stove, we have one, way more impact then a marble sink.

I just love my new kitchen counters. They are black with a slight white marbling. It isn't over done and reminds me of perhaps a little spilled mik. I know that sounds weird, but it is just enough contrast against the black background to keep it interesting, yet simple. I often try to sponge a spot up only to realize it is the design. The kitchen walls and cabinets are white with black appliances. white ( very fresh)

I agree about looking at maintenance of items placed in the kitchen. I don’t want intricate knobs that collect grime and other things that are time consuming to clean. My home was built in 1985 and had under cabinet lighting. The front and sides of the cabinet were lowered so the fluorescent strips were hidden. I love them because there’s a wall switch but the 3 strips have individual on/off switches so that you don’t need them all on. They are covered so easily wiped clean and the bonus is that each unit also has a built in outlet which is in addition to the other regular wall outlets so never am far from one. Now that people are ‘discovering’ under cabinet lighting, they don’t realize that they aren’t new, just not installed frequently in the past as they add to building costs. So many homes today have open space above cabinets, no handles or knobs and flat bottoms of cabinets that are cheaper to build.

My current favorite countertop material is quartzite, but likely that’s just because I’ve never had it. What I’ve learned through experience is that there is no perfect countertop material. I’m over the look of granite, it’s too busy for me. It’s also very porous, and therefore not the most hygienic if not sealed right. Travertine and marble are beautiful, but so much maintenance that I don’t even want them in my bathrooms anymore. I cook every day, and there are acids in even the most inconspicuous cosmetic products. Which is why this time I chose a quartz. Or settled for it. They get more natural looking all the time, and are hard to stain or etch. Not impossible though, but the one real drawback for me is that they are not heat resistant. I prefer the simplicity of a straight edge. Some manufacturers also call it “eased” edge.

I'm in the late stages of planning a kitchen remodel and taking all your advice to heart, thanks! Marble sinks are pretty, but won't ever have one personally. I'd be too afraid of damaging it. We're going with a honed Carrara marble countertop with marble backsplash though. Since we have a galley kitchen, I'll hang 3 semiflush pendant lights on the ceiling to add some interest, rather than solely recessed lighting. Hoping for inset cabinets, but due to cost, may need to stick with full overly. Getting a quote this week, so fingers crossed! Thanks again for all your advice; I've watched just about every video you've made and they've helped soo much!

Hmmm...I love a white subway tile backsplash because it is classic, bright, and looks greak while being low cost. What I have moved to is dark grey or black grout because of the maintence. Also, I edge all my tile with schluter. **Garrett, it would be great if you did an entire video on schluter and wall tile.

Hi, Thank you for the video. I just subscribed. I will get the contractor kitchen with no oven and no upper drowers. The building in not ready yet. I need the minimal-maintenance style so artificial stone countertop, and tiles, and metal sink. My biggest problem is... NO WINDOWS, though sufficient ventilation will be provided. Cannot imagine the kitchen with no window 😜

Hello Garrett, 😉 I am in the process of redoing my apt. This has been harder than I thought! However, I believe it's going to be really nice. Switching from beige, greens, purples to blue with gold/silver. New sofa gray/blue. Just ordered end/coffee tables solid wood with art deco flair. Gotta wait 2.5 months for them. Beautiful though. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Watching your videos, think I am doing OK. Thank you ssooo much. So enjoy you....and your advice.

Best backsplash ever is glass. Love it, love it, love it. You can choose a colour or pattern if you want and it is so, so easy to clean. I will get it again in the new kitchen. My daughter loves it and says it is the best choice she made for her new kitchen. Also I love the under and over cupboard lighting, gorgeous. Plus I love a lamp proper in my kitchen. What a difference hey make (I have two.) One stainless steel sink larger shallow with draining shelves both ends. I don’t net two sinks as I have a dishwasher. What a great video… Thanks for helping. Hugs from Oz.

As always, great advice and very good ideas on the kitchen design. Having just finished a full house remodel that included the kitchen, I can attest that everything you say makes perfect sense and is very helpful. We have shaker style frameless cabinetry in denim blue with white speckled granite countertop and full slab backsplash, tiled floors, chef’s kitchen double oven and a 36” cooktop that is very easy to maintain (no more digging out dirt and dust from the sides of the stove). Under cabinet lighting and recessed ceiling lights are perfect for the space (unfortunately no room for a chandelier lol). We found a very good solution for dealing with the grout - epoxy grout. It’s a bit more expensive than the regular kind, but it’s much cleaner during installation, very easy to maintain and is super durable. Comes in many colors too, so finding a perfect match is easy.

Great video, my daughter is redoing her kitchen and I am forwarding it to her . I have had a Blanco granite sink for over 10 years and I never have to worry about water spots or scratching and the color blends perfectly with my counter top. It is solid surface so you could sand it if you had to. After cleaning, you can wipe the sink with furniture polish oil and it looks brand new. Our area has a lot of vaulted ceilings which makes it harder to place cabinets or hang curtains! It is not possible to have cabinets go to the ceiling because the trim would have to be staggered and you could never reach the top cabinets. I really like how you address the functionality and maintenance as well as the aesthetics.

I redid my kitchen last year and the drawers for the lower cabinets is absolutely wonderful. so much easier to get into, just better all the way around. I could not afford to do cabinets all the way to the ceiling because I have 10 foot ceilings. And I wanted quartz countertops but I couldn't afford that either. It sucks when you're on such a tight budget. But oh well.

I'm probably one of the few people who don't like marble countertops or backsplashes. I like marble in small doses. Definitely would not put in a marbled sink. Sinks take a lot of damage and marble is too delicate.

Sorry quick question do copper and chrome appliances go well together? Like I said before I LOVE copper but majority of small kitchen appliances only come in chrome.

Hello 👋 you know I love me a kitchen video. Great advice as always. A marble sink looks gorgeous but that would be a nightmare to keep clean especially if you cook a lot. I have stainless steel double apron sink it’s beautiful but it too can be a challenge to keep clean all stainless steel appliances are. The worse is the microwave above the stove. We are in the process of removing ours I strongly suggest to put your microwave elsewhere or you will be constantly cleaning it several times a day not fun.

Thanks, Garrett, for a useful and informative video. The underside of my upper cabinets houses lighting AND electric receptacles. My backsplash is Porcelanosa’s 13”x34” “Ona” tiles that present as a solid, subtlely undulating surface. Mounting the receptacles under the uppers keeps the backsplash design intact. Strongly recommended.

Yes, I don’t like the ongoing current trend that seems to be not going away soon, of the cabinets that have the open space between the top and the ceiling. I will still take a soffit that is flush to the front of the cabinets over nothing being there. Another great conversation with so much amazing information! ❤️😊
