Quitting video games changed my life. In this video I share the seven things you should expect after you quit playing video games. These are the seven things that can cause us to relapse if we're not aware of them, so it's best to prepare beforehand and know how to respond when they occur.
I also share the three steps you should take if one of them does. I hope this helps and if it does, make sure you hit “thumbs up” and connect with us below.

Just want leave my expirience with game addiction here. I've been playing video games for about 16 years. It drained so much life from me that I didn't even realize how much video games distract me from my life purpose and goals. I was angry and frustrated on myself. I tried many times to quit playing video games, but I always get back to them. It's like sick addiction. This addiction pulled me away from my goals and success so many times. I'm 22 years and I still didn't finish college, unemployed, gained weight, emotionally unstable and have family who can't understand my struggles. I'm just trying to get everything back to normal and I hope I'll make this time because it's never too late. Where's will, there's way. I'm just so thankful that I realized that through strong will and gratitude I can make it and be positive.Peace, Soul Dreamer! :)

Games just feel like a waste of time for me now. I work in a game store and had this epiphany. The gaming community it pretty toxic, especially the console war fanboys or the gamers who act like entitled babies. Most of my friends and co workers spend all day playing games. There is nothing I have against them personally, but I was recently playing a Zelda marathon, and I love that series, but I have not been feeling it anymore. Breathe of the Wild took 260 hours and over $400 with those stupid amiibo the completionist in me wanted to attain. It was a great experience but it wasn't worth ALL of that in hindsight. I no longer resonate with my friends or coworkers who play games all day. I never was as addicted as them, but now I am even less so. I just feel like games are an overpriced way for you to waste you own time and creativity. If I want to escape, I can write a book, imagine, or make RU-vid videos. I can channel that creative energy into a physical manifestation of something productive, instead of living in someone else's creative world. Also, I don't see how someone could relapse if they actually sell their games. Saying "I quit gaming" but still owning game systems and games is like an alcoholic saying "I don't drink anymore" but have liters of it in the basement fridge or bar. Just sell everything and you won't relapse. I know it is hard because many of these games we grew up with. My childhood wouldn't have been the same without Mario, so my house without Mario, aside from a plushie, might feel a little sad. There is also the fear of "What if I want to game again someday?" But if you really want to play a certain game so bad, just buy the system and the handful of games again. Honestly though, I have just felt my intuition telling me to leave it all for good. I cried at the thought of giving away my childhood and the thousands of wasted hours, but those games need to go too.

I like and appreciate your videos. You are not condescendingly telling everyone to stop playing video games. You are not pointing down at people who play. You are saying that there is a whole world out there to see and experience that excessive gaming can steal from us! We're being robbed of natural dopamine-releasing activities. All things in moderation, but for those who become addicted it's far better to walk away! Replace with healthy activities rather than punish. Good video. I've already quit all of my vices--caffeine, internet browsing, facebook, I started reading--just need to move on from video games!

So I am on Day 4 of the Game Quitters Challenge, and I find purpose is a very important concept. I think cravings can actually come from a desire for purpose, and games or whatever addiction you had before give you that "fake" sense of purpose. Now, once you start searching for a new purpose, you don't see immediate results with your new activities, so you start doubting if you are on the right path. But knowing all you really crave is purpose and meaning, you realize that you might as well do something cool and lasting instead of chasing a "fake" purpose from Games (or whatever else it was you want to get away from).

Hey Cam, it's definitely been a rough time for me these past few days (family member passing away) and I almost relapsed. I was so close. It almost felt like an inevitable force trying to pull me back into gaming, it's quite scary honestly. Anyhow I luckily found myself getting distracted through youtube for hours, watching beat boxing videos for oZealous and I decided to close Steam. Now today you upload this video, reminding me even more why I don't want to go back to games, so thank you!! P.S. using your 60 Hobby ideas I have came up with these 4 hobbies I will start pursuing: Beatboxing (for the instrument), learning to write cursive, poetry, and (instead of becoming a collector) becoming a minimalist. so thanks for that too!

Thank you, Cam. I have been struggling with video game addiction for at least a couple of years now. I have tried to quit in the past only to return in a more intense way. Your website and your videos have helped me answer the eternal question that I had, which was whether or not I was truly addicted. I realized that I am and that I have poured the time and effort into video games that I wish I had poured into learning new things and bettering myself. These videos are a great help. I got rid of my steam account and sold all my handheld games today. This is day 3 of being a gamequitter and so far I have begun to read more, philosophy especially, and am beginning to recognize more and more things that I am interested in. However, I am still struggling to get myself to read at some points and there are times where I still feel as though I am searching for other meaningful things to do. I suppose that I will find those things in time, especially with school right around the corner. I just wanted to say that I really appreciate what you are doing to help us and make the addiction feel legitimized. Your actions inspire me.

With lots of videos searching for ways how to stop or reduce the amount of gaming, I think I might just stop playing them now. And it's really tempting to delete all my games like No Man's Sky, Destiny 2, Minecraft, Star Wars BF2, etc. But I did delete all of them a day ago, and feel like craving to play one of them now, but I've been playing a lot of video games since 2008. It's getting in the way of things I truly wanted to do, and that gaming IS really addicting if you're not careful with your time, and gained very little to no benefit from them. Now I just need to replace those bad habits with a skill or learn Spanish, play a sport or something I might just do. :) Thanks for the video.

I decided I'm going to quit playing video games and focus on my goal of being an artist. Even though I love video games, I spend way too much time playing them, putting everything else on the back-burner. I don't even play online games but it doesn't matter. I am addicted regardless. I have played so many games and while there are still so many more I have never played that I would like to play (plus new games coming out all the time), I ultimately decided that focusing on my goals is more important to me. Life is short which is why I feel that I need to prioritize. Also, I'm not really the kind of person who can just do something in moderation, it's sort of all or nothing with me. Anyway, thanks for the videos, they have helped me.

PC gaming was my treat for staying sober from alcohol - all good, but now I am beyond the booze and am stuck with this new addiction. 3 years now (thanks in no small part to the pandemic) and I wake up and immediately boot up the PC, and am on it 15/16 hours I'm up every day. My living situation is unideal to say the least, but I'm checked out all day. I have missed several windows of opportunity because the natural drives to achieve are simulated and sated through CS:GO, etc. I have a big study opportunity coming up that I have just about missed, but I want to change. I have have promised my brother this PC and am priming myself to quit this thing and hopefully my phone too so that I can focus on studying. Funny how the addiction framework is similar, if not the same, across different types of addictions. Thank you sir, I'll check out your other vidz! Cheers! .

How to quit gaming: Get to college or mid 20's. Get a girlfriend or boyfriend Go to work. Cook dinner. Clean up or something. Work out. You now can respect games for the brief safe haven from reality they provide, since you only have an hour left of your day left. Moderation is key.

+MotherFuckah Jones -the girlfriend bit I tick the rest, I still found myself playing games, but the worst part is I played until late at night along with my friends, you would be surprised how many people who are at uni still binge game at night even though they have work to do the next day, (being a chemistry student sometimes quite dangerous work if you aren't alert). They don't particularly want to, it's just they loose track of time or suffer from the "one more level syndrome". I personally needed to get away from them as they prevented me doing the other things I like in the short free time periods I have and they kept me up until late. Yes I acknowledge some people can play in moderation but others no matter how hard they try really struggle with that.

@@ismaeel747 I notice it when I was in my 20s yrs, being able to do things into the nite, & then be able to recover the next day, or in my next sleep. "Burning the candle at both ends" I did that with my job, taking classes at nite, going to clubs on Fri & Sat nite, & dating. When I reached 30 yrs "something" happened. I would come home from work feeling so exhausted I wanted to climb into bed & sleep. Too tired to make meals. Lost concentration at work. Memory problems. It was addiction I had to all the good attention from men, excitement at the clubs, love of dancing, staying up too late at nite. I became sick. Doctor diagnosed me with extreme exhaustion, allergy to alcohol, basically I was killing myself to be PERFECT in every one's eyes. Had to give it up, really tough, took long time for my health to come back. Yes, I had lost track of myself in running a treadmill of popularity. Getting off that vicious addictive cycle saved me.

I find the illusion of that instant reward to be the hardest thing to break. That sense that you can repetitively immerse yourself in a world where the results, positive or negative, are predetermined and so even if or when you fail, you know the exact way to change those negative results into positive ones. This leads to more and more time spent playing video games because the more you play and detach from the people or objects around you, the more you need that reliable stimulus to give you a sense of purpose. Good that channels like this are addressing and decompressing what is a complicated and serious issue for a lot of young people; especially young people who may be more introverted and prefer to spend time by themselves.

So glad to find this video. My one big gamer friend has not even cared or wanted to talk about my decision. My guild leader super supported me more than my "friend" 😢 One day at a time. I deserve not to throw away my future for one more cloth node, one more eso housing item. Ty for all your videos.

I quit games, once, it felt like shit, and I lost touch with my friends, now, I was bored and more stressed out. Now, I think differently, dont stop doing something you enjoy, just limit your time. Im a gamer, i've been a gamer my whole life, but now I only play 1-2 hours a day. Its much better this way, if you like it, don't quit, just control yourself.

I've played Destiny 2 at the highest level for the last 7 years. I have over 8000 hours on the game over that time. I have spent a lot lot lot of time playing this game meeting a large variety of people. All of which i have never met in person. I've hit a point where I do not wish to play this game or any game similar to it much at all anymore. I feel like I have so much to offer this world and wasting it all in front of a screen is just not it anymore. Covid has really forced us into our comfort zones and Im just ready to move on and live my life.

Hey Cam, have you heard of strengths finder? It's a psychological test that helps determine individuals strengths. The idea is that as people we should focus more on developing our strengths instead of focusing on our weaknesses. I see a lot of the comments on your videos about gamers that don't know how to define themselves after quiting gaming. Taking this test and realizing my strengths has helped me find some definition in life post gaming.

Today's games are just all created to entice you to spend as much money as possible and to give them all your free time. It's a vicious downwards spiral if it gets a hold of you. I'm 35 now and I've been addicted for decades. I have social anxiety, low self esteem and I pretty much feel ashamed about myself and my life all the time. It has prevented me from finding a girlfriend and from beeing happy in life. I realize now that the only way I'll ever be able to become happy is if I become a confident person. I'll never become that if I continue playing video games and watching RU-vid videos all day. Whether it's brushing my teeth more often, meditating, going for a hike, etc... I need to do everything I can to become as confident as I can be. Finally I'm determined to change. One step at a time.

I experienced a lot of fear, it was strange. It was harder than quitting marijuana lol. Do you think it's better to pack up your system and look back at gaming in general, after 90 days, or to sell completely? I am afraid of regretting selling it, if I want to play occasionally after the 90 days.

September 2014 I had stopped playing video games for religious reasons I threw away all my consoles and basically neutered my Pc and had no problems no relapses till this holiday season.All of a sudden I was going through intense cravings on a large scale. I bought an Xbox one setup but didn't play it. I prayed to God I fasted for 2 days then finally I got the courage to throw in the trash.then I went back in the trash to see if it was there this morning but it was already gone.thank God.it made me realize that this will be a battle that will go on forever

Something we need to acknowledge is life stressers that contribute to gaming addiction. If it didn't start that way, I'm sure at some point it might end up that way. Bad home life, other addictions (alcohol, drugs, etc), turbulent family and friends, low self esteem, etc and how all that can be reason to play games and distract yourself from the things not up to par in your life.

I have a question that you might want to talk about if you haven't already. How do you reconcile abandoning the gamer identity? I've identified as a gamer for most of my life, spending most of my time playing games, reading articles about games, and even working on games. It seems almost like I'm betraying my own self image by trying to move away from it so completely. Today is day 1 of my 90 day detox by the way, so I'm still struggling with whether or not I'm even going to try and do it, so this is one of the things that has been on my mind.

However video games have been taking over as of late. I also noticed things like not enjoying other things in life. Any time I need to do something, I choose gaming because it's the go-to thing to do. Any advice on restoring balance?
@GameQuitters
@GameQuitters 8 лет назад
+Brent Ragas Hey Brent. Good to hear from you. The main thing is to separate your work from your free time. I would recommend doing the 90 day detox (I have a video on this) for any gaming outside of work (be very clear with yourself what constitutes work and what doesn't). Remember, gaming is just your go-to, it just fulfills certain needs you have, so the key to reducing your time or removing games in your free time is to be conscious in fulfilling those needs in new activities.

Is it necessary to start a journal online? I mean, I used to journal before but then gaming began to distract me. I felt more connected to myself and my feelings back then. Basically it made me feel better about myself and more confident. But the idea of sharing your thoughts for everybody to see kinda makes me uncomfortable. Even if I did, there's no way I'd be able to write as freely as I would on my own thus taking a bit off of the experience. Other than encouragement and connecting with people having the same problem with gaming, why do you think it'd be better to journal online than just at your own desk?

I don't have any gamer friends. I don't count random strangers who add me in an online games as friends because i've never met them in person and never will, but if your friends don't understand your need to quit then you it might make you wonder if they are your true friends or not. My friends have been really supportive of me doing this.
