My tip for an upgrade is to not pay for the cruise in full up front. But have about $100.00 left for the balance, because it seems to easier to get that upgrade.

I have to correct you on the free upgrades! I sailed with Royal Caribbean and booked an interior and got a FREE upgrade to a balcony back in December- Totally Free, and I booked 3-4 weeks before the sailing!!! So, it does happen for free!!!

At the time I book I record the prices of the other categories of cabins. Then I re-price my cabin and the other categories on a monthly basis and record in a spreadsheet. That way, when I get an upgrade offer I know exactly how the offer compares to the prices at the time of original booking AND compared to the current prices. On my last cruise, I received about 6 upgrade offers over the course of a year. All of them were less favorable than if I had just bought the higher category at the time of booking. However, all of them were more favorable than the "current" pricing. I did not accept any of the offers because my original booking was the best deal.

Just got an upgrade offer today from Holland America, my 3rd cruise to Alaska, cruising solo on a casino offer, but had to pay for 2, went from interior to partial obstructed just 99× 2, not bad.

We have received a few upgrade offers over the years..... but mostly I book the cabin we want the first time around,

I just had an upgrade offer a couple weeks ago on the Panorama next month. Moving from a central balcony on deck 8 to a spa balcony on deck 12 forward for $200. I don’t care about the spa, so I declined it.

I always book the cabin I want the start with. Sailing on the Jubilee in Oct in cabin 14375. We've been on the "HUMP" on the Mardi Gras twice and Celebration once.

What’s not being mentioned is the cabin that you booked is much more desirable at times and easier to sell vs the upgraded cabin.

If you need a handicapped cabin you need to stay with whatever you booked. Because there is no guarantee that you will get upgraded to another handicapped cabin

Yes, I would pay extra for a balcony. I did get an offer a month or so ago for my march cruise, and I declined it because where they wanted to move us to the same balcony we had except it was above or below the food area, cant remember which. Wish I knew not to decline it ugh!

I would like to know if there is anyway of checking how much are/were better rooms going for "back when original room was reserv". I just came back from a Caribbean Princess where I bid $460 more (16 days) for balcony vs. OV. I did "win" the bid, but I'll always wonder what would have been the original price for "back then". (Seems like $450 is a LOT more.)

I've noticed that since we turned platinum last year on Carnival, the upgrades and casino offers have stopped. Not sure if they are related, but it seems odd.
