we do not like talking about our bad reviews, I'm sure if we are honest we all have 1, I had one six months after the wedding, even after a thank-you card. the bride realized after looking and looking that she was an ft taller than her groom and looked weird... duhhhh not my fault, she then started to hate her images and I got the blame... kind of funny looking back but !!! ALL your points are valid.
@db511
@db511 Год назад
Just like me, I've got 1 star reviews just because i and the groom disagree to make the bride look more skinny, the reason is the bride's dress are beautiful if i edit it it will look unnatural, unfortunately she upset after that, but the photo still looks good

Thank you for the great tips, John. I have watched and learned from your content since I got back into photography in 2020. You have helped me so much. And yes, photography is more than just the photography! You are one of the few that make it a point to cover the business aspect of it. You seem very authentic and genuine in your teaching. I always get a kick out of how many claps you are going to have in the next video to get your point across Hahaha Keep doing what you are doing. You are helping so many in their photography journeys!

❤Great video. Wish I had this video to watch 10 years ago. Love when you give us content like this. Made a living for over a decade behind a camera and the skill was never a problem, it was the business side that took the most work and insight. Lost everything and working on getting back to that life and need videos like this to refresh and inspire me. Thanks for taking the time to make it. 👍

haha, your first tip is one I'm dealing the consequences of right now. Vetting your clients and checking to see if there's a vibe there is so important. That isn't saying anything negative about the client if the vibe isn't there or you see red flags. Just means it isn't a right fit for you.

Finally a photographer who isn't a try hard and talks about working smart and not hard. Like if you can do so many things automatically then why not do that, if you can use something free that literally has the same results as something paid why not do that, if you can show the work that you want to do in your portfolio, BASICALLY ENJOY YOUR JOB why not do that 💀 I also realised that many photographers are crazy materialistic, they buy studios, the latest gear, fancy clothes, and props, their bills go through the roof because a lot of them live in america where 5000 a month isn't enough and think that we all have to be working the same hours as them, they do 100 risky things just to get more money and end up with less, their photos don't have a soul because they only do this to pay the bills as they say, then they don't have clients and hate their job and after all of that they post stupid things on the internet saying It's a very competitive job. Go figure. The only reason they do these is to appear like professionals. You are a breath of fresh air, thank you
@wastedtalentusa
@wastedtalentusa Год назад
All tips are very valid and important. The only thing I don't understand is how some photographers like to say that top of the line equipment doesn't make a difference in the quality of the images. Yes they do. Your portfolio also stands out for your vision and creativity. However, the image quality done with a canon prime lens 70-200mm 2.8 will be infinitely superior to that of a 35-55mm lens. And this quality stands out in your portfolio, makes your customer happy and draws the attention of future customers. Of course, the best camera will always be the one you have. But, being able to have better equipment than what you have today makes a lot of difference. Don't fantasize that all you need is your talent.

to piggyback off the interracial aspect, I'd love to see an editing tutorial on that. Great video, I really like #5, I like all of them but #5... Stay with the gear you know. Unfortunately, some RU-vidrs are telling us that our gear isn't good enough and people are jumping ship to "the best gear" because the one we have is lacking somewhere. This is the brand that I can AFFORD and WANT to shoot with because I like it, stop telling me it's not good enough for this reason. I know what it lacks let me deal with that quirk.
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography Год назад
Exactly. I hate how often everyone is asking me “what’s the best camera”. THE ONE YOU KNOW. Stop wasting your money always upgrading. I mean I almost didn’t upgrade to the X-T5 and just kept my X-T3s for a LONG LONG time. Glad you liked that point.

Sometimes, bad reviews are simply malicious. I got a Google one-star review from another local photographer, and, quite frankly, I had never interacted with this guy or even heard of him. I complained to Google, but they would not remove the one-star review. All I could do was respond to the review and call it what it really is: BOGUS! Sometimes, you have to fight back against the cyber bullies.

John's right! Of my 38 years in Marketing and Sales, I learned that with good business practices, you can sell painted rocks to people. There's a guy (Gary Dahl ) who sold painted rocks for $22.59 each in today's dollars ($3.95 in 1975). He made around $82,750,000 million in today's dollars ($15 million in 1975). It goes to show you with good marketing skills you can sell painted rocks in a box with straw and call it a Pet Rock. This just proves that top of the line gear isn't important as giving your customers what they want. Even though it's just a painted rock. And if you think that was just a unicorn business, there is a lady selling Cow Chips (💩). Yep! She just collects the poop after it's dried and puts in an air tight bag and boxes it. People send them to friends to prank them or to bosses they don't like. Again, gear doesn't matter. So if you really focus on giving your customers what they want, you don't have to be so concerned about what camera or lens you need. Cameras today are so good, I've seen photographers add grain and shutter drag to their images. Couples love it. Photographer think our clients are insane. But if its what they want, then make the best for them. Personally, I'm going to start adding first and rear curtain sync shots to reception shots. Another local photographer I've seen uses tilt-shift lenses for some of his wedding shot. He's knowed around the world for this kind of work.

About websites it's not easy to just get one. This is just advice! Hearing How to market is Way better then just what to do. These videos become useless when all we are given is a to do list but not help in breaking down the How to market & ads & promote ourselves well.
@PTRNParenting
@PTRNParenting Год назад
Part of the reason that people obsess about gear is because you make a video about how great fuji cameras are, and then a sony user makes a video about how great sony cameras are, and then a canon person makes a Canon video and we watch them all and then we arrive at the question " which camera is best?"

Good advice on the video about the equipment upgrades. My question to you is do you advertise ? For example google ads, wedding wire, the knot ect. What do you think is a reasonable amount of money to spend on advertising if you are making about 18k a year?
@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel Год назад
For what it’s worth, I barely spend any money on advertising, mainly website SEO has been majority of my lead gen. Sometimes I boost posts for 10-20 bucks every now and then. Booked between $60-80k in weddings last year. I see your craft and SEO as most important so you’ll want to rank locally. People search “wedding photographer in X city” so make sure you rank by having a good amount of keywords, content and as more people engage with your site/page, you’ll rank higher and higher.

while i appreciate all of these tipps, i will admit that i am quite annoyed by photographers making claims such as "there is no best camera for x" or "gear doesnt matter, you can make great photos with any gear". While these are true in essence they also completely miss the point, because while there is no "best" of any gear every gear is either better or worse than some other gear because it depends on what you want to do. This means that gear absolutely matters, because there certain shots that you just CANNOT realistcly do without certain gear. You CAN go out and start doing wildlife photography with a 12 mm manual lense, but is it WISE? probably not. Its probably better to get a 200-600mm lense with active image stabilasation and high quallity glass to do that.

Thanks Jon, do you use AI, in Adobe, Light Room, Photoshop,or only for edits.

The AI I use is mainly for editing in Lightroom. Speeds up the process.

Not a fun story at all. But I'll have to make sure I put it up on the channel

@@jbivphotography At a wedding, I am "all in" and it would be difficult to stay confident in my work after this kind of difficulty. That's why I think it is so important to learn from such situations. I'd rather learn it from others than by myself. I read your answer on TheKnot and it's also a great subject "how to handle criticism". Your answer is respectful and a great way for new couples to be the right match for your photography style. Thank you John for your amazing work.

Do you share all the RAW files with the customer for selection process? or only the committed number of images?
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography Год назад
I do not. Generally I pick out what I consider and the best and most memorable images and send those to my couples.

Stop charging low rates. It will save your business and the industry as a whole. Your other fellow photographers will thank you. Also for you to stop charging low rates, learn freaking OCF.

PLEASE don’t make a video about a bad experience that you don’t want to talk about just because people want you too as surely you’ll be ignoring your own advice and be “chasing the dollar” (not verbatim).

True. The story really isn’t that bad, but it really wasn’t a good time at all for me. I almost quit photography because of it and don’t ever really like to bring it up or even look at the photos. Maybe I should take my own advice.
