You can’t be a King without the bling, and you can’t be a Queen without the sheen. Royal women have long donning glittering headgear to make them stand out from the crowd. Tiaras are works of art and are fitted with pricey diamonds, pearls and other precious stones. As these heirlooms are often passed down female family lines it is fascinating to see how they bounced across Europe with royal brides. Today, let's gawk at 7 of the most impressive and historic European royal Tiaras.
Empress Josephine’s Cameo Tiara
Norwegian Emerald Parure Tiara
Stuart Tiara

Fleur-de-Lys “La Buena” Tiara
Prussian Diamond Tiara
Tsarina Alexandra’s Pearl and Diamond Diadem
Khedive of Egypt Tiara

For a modern day tiara story, consider Princess Charlene of Monaco. The Grimaldi family lost jewels in the French revolution, and Princess Grace didn't wear tiaras that often. Her daughter Princess Caroline is rarely shown with a tiara. With the marriage of Prince Albert in 2011, Monaco finally had a reigning princess again after almost 30 years. Albert commissioned a modern gold tiara that his wife wore to their wedding reception, as well as an ocean themed tiara with blue and white jewels in circular patterns. Princess Charlene wore this convertible tiara as a necklace to a gala and also as a tiara in a photo shoot, and it went on display with the wedding dress after the wedding. She hasn't really worn it much at all since. Albert bought most of these jewels from Van Cleef & Arpels in Paris. These jewels will probably stay with the family and pass to their twin children, Jacques and Gabriella. So, these tiaras are neither old nor made from inherited jewels, but will start a new legacy.

Princess Charlene doesn't seem to wear much jewelry in general, but maybe it's because of personal preference

At 3:34. Fun fact: the Swedish royal family is from the House of Bernadotte of France. Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was the man who founded this new Swedish dynasty, when he became the adopted son of a childless Swedish King Charles XIII in 1810. He ascended the throne as King Charles XIV John. How did a Frenchman become the adopted son of a Swedish king? Because Bernadotte was one of Napoleon's most trusted marshals. During the Napoleonic Wars, Bernadotte had shown himself to be compassionate to Swedish prisoners of war. The Swedish government never forgot this, so in 1810 it unexpectedly chose him to become the adopted son and heir presumptive to Sweden's king. So having the cameo tiara of Empress Josephine be incorporated into the Swedish crown jewels was not the only French thing ending up unexpectedly in Sweden. LOL.
@nicollnono
@nicollnono 6 месяцев назад
Ohhhhh don't forget the most juicy part. Bernadotte's wife was engaged to Napoleon first, but then he met Josephine. (whose actual name was Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie, Napoleon decided he liked Josephine better - Beauharnais was the last name her her first - executed - husband) Her sister married Napoleon's brother, Joseph. Napoleon felt bad about breaking off the engagement with Désirée, so he tried to marry her off to another of his generals - Duphot, but he was killed the day before they were to get married, in a riot. Désirée claimed the engagement never happened, but there's records of it, so... She ended up moving back to France, all of Napoleon's family members sided with her against Josephine, and Désirée definitely had some observations about Josephine, but apparently kept the peace. She was proposed to by another General, said no, and then Napoleon told Bernadotte about her. She finally agreed to marry him. The some of the jewels she was given? They were purchased for her by Napoleon. He wanted all of the women of his court to look *fabulous* for his coronation. She also had a malachite and gold set made for her that featured mythological figures on the malachite. The Danish Ruby Parure uses the rubies from Désirée's ruby coronation jewelry. They went from French, to Italian (Bernadotte was made Prince of Ponte Corvo), to Swedish, to Danish jewels worn by queens. Oscar (Désirée's son) married Josephine (Josephine's granddaughter), and then their granddaughter, Lovisa, married Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark. I should probably stop reading so much lol

The Joséphine de Beauharnais Cameo tiara is in a class of its own if you ask me. Swedish Television released a short documentary about the royal jewelry collection a couple of years ago and the craftsmanship of the Cameo tiara in particular is breathtaking.

It should be noted that tiaras and matching jewelry often come up for sale at the large auction houses like Sotheby's and Christie's in London. They can be bought by royals (as in the case of Princess Margaret for her wedding tiara, which was later sold by her kids at Christie's after her death), aristocrats or anybody with money. You can also go to the fine jewelry stores and commission a new tiara for a family heirloom. The Duke of Windsor commissioned several pieces for his wife, as the British royals didn't want to lend any of the royal tiaras to the wife of the abdicated king. Among others, a receipt in 1939 shows Edward paid £10,000 for a single piece of jewelry for his wife, which was a tremendous amount of money in the 1930's. These were all auctioned off after her death in the 1980s.

Too bad the ruby and diamond set made for Desiree Clary, the later Queen of Sweden, for Napoleon's coronation didn't make one of the spots. It went first to Sweden, but when Desiree's granddaughter, Lovisa, married the future King Frederik the VIII of Denmark, Lovisa was gifted the set with the words "The Danish colors should go to Denmark". It has since been worn only by future Queens of Denmark and is currently being used by Crown Princess Mary. What's also interesting is that much of the Danish royal collection of jewels came from Lovisa, who famously brought so many jewels to Denmark they could fill out an entire pool table.
@piratesswoop725
@piratesswoop725 Год назад
Lovisa was the only daughter (and really, only child!) so it made sense for her to end up with a lot of the Swedish jewels. I’m glad the cameo stayed in Sweden though, it looks incredible on Victoria.
@CopenhagenDreaming
@CopenhagenDreaming Год назад
The ruby and diamond parure is very lovely - but I don't think it could outrank the others on the list. It's essentially just a really nice leaf motif with small-ish ruby clusters - so definitely very wearable and elegant, not to mention adjustable. (That set has been rearranged enough times to make anybody dizzy - and I think that's a good thing!) It's great for the second-ranking female royal - but it's not the "big guns" in terms of royal bling. We'll see what Mary looks like with the pearl poire set in due course - I'm sure it will look wonderful.
@christinaj.jensen4805
@christinaj.jensen4805 Год назад
@@CopenhagenDreaming the Pearl parure yes. That is a magnificent set that also came from Lovisa, and one of the Queen’s favorites. No doubt about it it Will look magnificent on Mary. Also the emerald tiara that’s part of the Crown Jewels. The Queen’s flower tiara that Can be broken into several pieces I’m curious to see who ends up with that one. Could imagine Princess Isabella wearing that one.
@CopenhagenDreaming
@CopenhagenDreaming Год назад
@@christinaj.jensen4805 Mary is a very pretty person and knows how to stand up straight - so she can probably carry almost any jewels you could throw at her! (As could, of course, so many other women - but they won't have access to quite the same jewellery vault... I'm sure you'd look wonderful in the rubies!) Also, I'm kind of against the monarchy, just for the record. But the current royals? Fair enough. Can't be bothered to start a revolution against a queen who is so delightfully weird and artistic. Mary seems boring by comparison - but she does seem to have personality, which is important. After all, being able to wear jewellery is only a tiny part of the job.

Lindsay - your vids are always fantastic and informative. Can you do a vid more in detail explaining the differences between a Crown, Circlet, Tiara and a Diadem, Bandeau etc? they all blend together and some look like a crown but called a Diadem. ex. Queen Elizabeth George IV Diadem she would wear to the state opening of parliament. its round and looks like a crown to me etc. and give clear defined examples of each. Even in one Harry Potter film they were looking for a Diadem which looked like a Tiara 3/4 hoop on the head with just a small grouping of gems at the front. Thank you!!!! signed. CONFUSED! :)

The Romanovs did not sew their jewels into clothing until well after their arrest. It was done in Tobolsk, primarily by Olga, Tatiana and Maria as well as their maid, while the rest of the family was on their way to Ekaterinburg. Alix wrote to them to “arrange the medicines (jewels) as discussed”. This is also why Maria’s body was noted not to have any, because she was gone at the time.

Tiaras are so beautiful, and I wish it was acceptable for non-royal women to wear them for more than just their weddings. I ordered a beautiful silver circlet set with a single moonstone for my wedding, but didn't get to wear it -- it didn't arrive until a week afterwards, despite the fact I ordered it two months in advance. I so want the opportunity to wear it, but I haven't had a chance since.

A fun fact relating to the Cameo Tiara - Prince Oskar of Sweden was the son of Carl XIV Johan and Queen Desideria, or as they were known before they were elected to the Swedish throne, Jean-Baptist Bernadotte and Desiree Clary. Desiree is famous for being the subject of the romantic novel and later film adaptation of the same name, about her early romance and eventual long-term friendship with Napoleon. She and Princess - later Queen - Josefina became quite close during in their long dowager retirements after the deaths of their husbands.

At 15:39. I'm a bit confused. Why does the Fleur-de-Lys tiara have a connection to Britain on this map? I thought it was made in Spain through a commission paid for by the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, as a gift to his wife. I'm assuming all the giant glittering diamonds in the tiara had previously been in the Spanish crown jewels and were simply reset in this fabulous tiara.

So,just a few things that you may have gotten wrong during the research for this video (which,by the way,is totally understandable): 01- Dom Pedro I died while he was in Portugal,in 1834 and Amelia was with him and their only child Maria Amélia. Since Amelia only married Pedro in 1829,she only spend two years in Brasil before heading to Portugal. 02- The emerald tiara was actually a gift from Augusta to Amelia due to her wedding to Dom Pedro I (IV of Portugal) in 1829. She is even depicted wearing said tiara when she exited the ship in Brasil. By the way,the emeralds where probably Colombian or Brasilian. The Russian emeralds hadn't been discovered yet at the time of Josephine. And,some fun fact: * the cameos from Josephine's tiara are originals and where found in Pompey and Herculaneum. *Alongside the other jewelry Amelia left to her sister,was the Bragança Tiara she had gotten as birthday gift from Pedro. The Brazilian diamonds in the tiara were originally from a necklace he had given to his first wife,empress Leopoldina,when they got married by proxy. The necklace was dismantled to make an gift for Amelia because Brasil had apparently run out of diamonds that big.

Oh I loathe the Burmese ruby, but maybe it’s because I so loved the design of the Nizam of Hyderabad tiara that was dismantled to make it! The GD Vladimir is an incredible piece, though! I have to admit, I’m a little sad the queen has never, at least as far as I know, lent it out to her cousin Alexandra, who is a great granddaughter of the grand duchess.

Queen Elizabeth: Hey Alexandra give us our Tara back. How dare you flaunt it front of us. Alexandra: No.

You know, I really don't care that Margaery wears a tiara. She deserved it more than most other characters in that show.

Thank you for a very interesting video. Slightly annoying at the end when you referred to Princess Diana but called Princess Catherine by her maiden name. She has not been Catherine Middleton since 2011.

Further, she was never Princess Diana. She was Diana, Princess of Wales. Only women born into a royal family can be addressed as “Princess ……” such as Princess Anne. And, HRH The Princess of Wales loathes being called “Kate.” She has been very clear that she prefers the name Catherine.

@@leechase1319 Thank you, too. I've been correcting that with friends and family for years (though I'm not a royalist).

@@leechase1319 Correction, this only applies to the British royal family - women marrying into other royal houses are styled 'Princess first name', e.g. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Princess Sofia of Sweden, Crown Princess Maxima of the Netherlands (now Queen Maxima), Princess Marie of Denmark, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, etc.

I heard if you marry into the British Royal Family, whilst you’re not called Princess Polly for instance you can be called Princess then your husband’s name. For examples Markle thought she’d be Princess Meghan but she could be known as Princess Henry just like Princess Michael of Kent. I loved the sleekness of the Prussian tiara.
