In the books, he taunts Sirius about being stuck at home doing nothing while everyone else is fighting (KNOWING that Sirius wanted to go out and fight) Because of this, Sirius DIED, so I wouldn't exactly call this "keeping him safe" (Also I mean no hate I just wanted to clarify something)
@@Heather_102 Right, I'm sure Sirius Harry and Bellatrix had no agency whatsoever *roll my eyes* Let's be real here, Sirius would have left to find Harry even if Dumbledore himself told him to stay put.
I dunno, he was talking in a very weird, slow manner, teenagers would mock the hell out of him (outside of class) if it was for real. Imho if he talked a bit more like Lucius Malfoy or McGonagal, it would fit better. And he looked way older than he should. His acting was good but overall it wasn't perfect in my opinion.
Did you know that Alan Rickman wanted to leave the movie after shooting 2nd movie because he didn't like his character. Then Rowling told him a little secret about his character which kept him acting in the whole movie. And he never revealed the secret until 8th book release. 🙃
Not to mention in Chamber Of Secrets when Argus Filch accused Harry of murdering and then petrifying Mrs.Norris, he said perhaps Harry and his friends were at the wrong place at the wrong time
@@madelinegarber7860 no in the book as well if i remember right. and then a splitsecond later he calls in question WHY they were in this corridor instead of at the feast like everybody else
Same. Generally speaking, the movies were much better at making Snape’s redemption work since they heavily toned down his abusive behavior towards Harry, Neville and Hermione. That along with them actually giving Snape some scenes before deathly hallows that actually showcased him being a teacher who would protect his students goes a long way to show how misunderstood he was in the movies.
@@paulwaswalrus5956 yep, and when he woke up he played a big part in Sirius getting the Dementor’s kiss sentence. Snape was a pain in the ass in this part of the book.
You just made me think of that. Because I thought it was. Also I wonder if snape gave Harry the invisibility cloak. Since he didn’t sign it. Only he wouldn’t sign it.
I really wish Snape would develop a more sympathetic view of Harry during the Occlumency lessons when he viewed how terribly the Dursley's treated him. Because Snape was bullied too. It would've been a nice moment where he realizes that Harry is not his father. It would've been an interesting character buildling moment
But it was meant to protect him, voldemort would not have shown sympathy and thus, by doing the same, he helped harry become more powerful in resisting the dark lords will.
Don't foget that he made a patronus and showed harry where the Gryffindor sword is. He said to Phenius Nigellus to stop saying mudblood to people. This man loved harry while hating him. ❤️
There are a few other things.... one of them that gets overlooked a lot is that Snape indirectly gave Ginny, Neville, and Luna the password to get into the headmaster's office, so they can try to steal Gryffindor's sword. And no, there's no way McGonagall would do it, she would have considered it too dangerous, and never would have put a students life in danger for a sword.
@@jenocide5295So how did Ginny, Luna & Neville get into the headmaster's office? You need a password to get past the garglye in front of the door. Yes, he was the one who caught them, because he needed a reason to put a fake sword in the Lastrange vault. It was a set up. And even their punishment wasn't bad, considering the Carrows were supposed to be in charge of punishment for kids who got detention. Snape sent them to to dentention with Hagrid instead.
@@lxena8033 wait how did I never realize any of this? I just finished that book this morning too for the zillionth time. I thought they just guessed. But I think you’re right. It makes sense. I mean I’m sure whatever they did for Hagrid was dangerous, but it’s much tamer than what the Carrows would’ve done.
@@madelinegarber7860 lol, well I have a bunch of theories on what Snape was doing behind the scenes... not mentioned in the books, because the books are based from Harry's point of view, but are all within the character and the way he was written. For example, does anyone question who helped heal Hermione after their adventure into the Ministry in book 5? Because it wasn't Madame Promfry. Hermione was hit with a powerful dark curse from Dolaholf, this is outside her capabilities, she even says this in HBP when attending to Bill, and even Dumbledore has said he doesn't dip into dark magic. So this would've fallen to Snape, who knows Dolaholf, and probably knew what spell it was after Neville told them what happened. Snape might have had to perform the same spell he did on Malfoy, because it's hinted that spell damages internal organs. Snape would have also instructed Madam Promfry on what potions to use. None of this is mentioned in the books, but it fits his character.
The movies did a pretty good job in making him conflicted. He hated Hairy because he looked like his dad but cared for him because he was his mother's son.
He also teaches them about werewolves before they were meant to learn about them. That was to prepare him for if he encountered Lupin as a werewolf that year 👍👍
I like how, when McGonagall is fighting him, he not only deflects all of her spells but manages to incapacitate two of "his own people" blind over his shoulder, and takes their wands as he escapes, so they aren't a threat to the students or the teachers
Partially hates harry because he's the son of man who bullied and tormented him in his youth he treated harry with distained as retribution for his father action towards snape out of spite but also protecting and helping him because he's also the son of woman he loved
@@balcorn9211 if only U knew why....to put it short he did it so Harry wouldn't be involved in the ongoing events but Harry persisted so he devised an alternative by safeguarding Harry during his stay in Hogwarts.
@@yuzhongmobilelegends582 Read the books. Just read the chapter of Chamber of Secrets right after Harry and Ron arrive at Hogwarts. Snape hated Harry because all he could see was James (much like Sirius). You’re jumping through all kinds of hoops to make Snape into the good man you wish he were.
No one is going to mention how he sounded so disgusted with Dumbledore when he mentioned that Harry needed to be killed by Voldemort? How he sounded almost insulted when he responded, "You've been raising him like a pig for slaughter?"
You’re right! Harry never acknowledged that he learned the charm that would help him defeat Voldemort multiple times from one of his least favorite people. A bit ironic really.
*Voldemort in GOF* Voldemort: "You've been taught how to duel I presume yes? Harry: "No" Voldemort: "What?" Harry: "I've not learned any spells" Voldemort: "Not even the disarming spell?" Harry: "Ooooo that sounds good, I might use that as my favourite spell. What does that do?" Voldemort: "Ummm, disarms a witch or wizard?" Harry: "Cool" *Voldemort looks at his death eaters* "Is this kid serious? And he's suppose to be the chosen one. Chosen idiot more like" Deatheater: "Hahaha, nice one Voldy *Voldemort coughs* Voldemort: "Would you like me to teach you it Harry so we can get this duel underway?" Harry: "Nah, I'm good thanks, I'll just look through some books back at hogwarts"
@@ciaravalenzuela2467 except the first one mentioned in this clip. dumbledore later explained why snape tried to save harry this year despite his obvious hate of him: james had saved his life and he wanted to continue to hate him in peace
It was more he’s care for Lilys only child and not wanting Harry to meet the same fate. In the books Snape pleaded with Dumbledore to save Lily from Voldemort without mentioning James and Harry but when Dumbledore pointed out that Lily would be devastated if she lived but James and Harry perished only then did Snape ask Dumbledore to save them all. So Snape is just protecting Harry because he knows that’s what Lily would want
Book Snape was a bad person who had little to no redeemimg qualities. All his good deeds were rooted in his obsession with Lily which makes him a very selfish an entitled character. Movie Snape, however, was an actual ambiguous hero who had a complex personality and moral code, who actually came through to Harry when he was needed. That’s why I think it was more logical for movie Harry to name his son after him. Book Snape was still a big abuser of his position who tormented the students he didn’t like for no reason.
I think harry named his son after snape because he appreciated the effort snape had put just to and I quote “make lily potter’s son safe” after years of her death+ can you imagine for 3 years snape had been trolling voldy facing him and saying he is his follower and he is not that must have been terrifying but snape did it and succeeded at it just for lily And if snape was selfish he would’ve killed him self when lily died but decided to keep going just for harry he absolutely doesn’t think by protecting harry lily would forgive him no he just wanted to something good for his dead friend “and what good would that be to anyone” this is what Albus told him when snape said he wanted to die I am not calling snape an angel he did kill people and bully students but he also sacrificed his life by tricking voldy and saved the whole wizarding world (j.k said that her self) he is a bad person who has done great good things.
Yea it’s like a commentary Chanel ones said “ jk Rowling probably just thought it would be a fun idea if Harry named his kid after that one teacher he hated and then she worked backwards from that.”
No, Book Snape did have some very redeeming qualities, such as the fact that he genuinely did love and care for Lily. Also he genuinely was on Dumbledore's side no matter what, genuinely caring for the old man as shown in the scene in the book where he's treating Dumbledore's cursed hand. Snape also risked everything to destroy the Dark Lord.
@@martincurran6432 being obsessed with someone and doing what you are hired for isn’t exactly redeemable qualities if you ask me. Every good action Snape does is fueled by his love for Lily and that’s the problem. The fight against Voldemort is not about doing the right thing for him. It’s just revenge.
At the time I really loved that scene. I knew nothing about his backstory or his reasons, the only thing I saw was that he hated Harry because of James and would happily make his life miserable on a personal level but whenever there was real danger Snape was the teacher and Harry was his student and he would die protecting his students if necessary - even those he hated.
Thé fact that he stood between transformed Remus and harry, even though he was probably terrified of that particular werewolf due to the trauma of almost being killed by lupin when he was in school, is the most beautiful thing that he ever did.
I'd say it's just 5 times. In the books, snape was unconscious when Lupin transformed. His occlumency lessons did not succeed at all, he taunted harry mostly.
Actually in the end, occlumency did work for Harry. Also, I imagine there was another reason why Dumbledore wanted Snape to be the one to teach Harry occlumency. There's always an alternative motive when it comes to Dumbledore.
I would give Harry a bit more of the blame for sucking at occulmency. Even Draco managed to do it with all the stuff he was going through during his 6th year.
@@davidbakke9293 Draco was taught by Bellatrix, someone he kinda looked up to. While Harry was taught by someone he hated, someone who never missed a chance to make his life miserable. So instead of clearing his mind after the lessons, he was full of anger and range. So how do blame him for sucking?
I remember all of the times Snape helped and tried to save Harry, but it wasn't because he liked or cared about him it was because he still loved Harry's mother, he still hated him.
You must be new to Harry Potter fandom if you think he is unsung hero Seriously after the last harry Potter almost everybody started to say Snape is the true hero
@@MorganLeodeMenezes unsung in the series, not in fandom. You do seem to make unwarrented assumtions. Perhaps you are a child, as you seem to put yourself in the center of your reality.😐
Jk did an amazing job with the hp series. She could have gone a bit more indepth on the lore of the world, but her character development and just her overall style of writing is damn brilliant. Snape shows her character development, and a good example of her writing style is when bellatrix is killed, she writes it in such a way that you can envision exactly what molly did from her point of view.
That's only in the movie. In the book Harry is covered by the invisibility cloak and rendered immobile by Dumbledore's spell. He can only move again after Dumbledore is killed and the spell is thus lifted
I don't think he liked Harry all that much, but I do believe that he cared about him. In the beginning he may have only protected Harry because of Lily, but eventually he started to protect Harry because he cared about him too.
I agree, I think Severus did grow to care about Harry. That is why Dumbledore calls him out on it, saying" don't tell me now that you care for the boy" I think spending all the time with Harry, he saw more of Lily in his personality, then of James. I mean, Harry even got between him and Sirius at Grimmauld place when Sirius tried to start something. If he were more like James, he would have stood back and cheered Sirius on.
@@lxena8033 Snape revealed right after it wasn't that he cared about Harry, but instead saved and protected him out of love for Lily. "For him?!" He says then does the Doe Patronus showing its his deep love for Lily
I feel like he did it out of his love for Lilly at first but then also started to care for Harry after seeing more of Lilly"s heart/ personality and also thinking that Harry could've/would've been his son if Lilly had chosen him instead .
Movie Snape: Blocks harry from the werewolf Book Snape: *Unconscious during battle and then takes all the credit for defeating the dementors afterwards*
It was so heartbreaking when I read that after all that time, he was the one looking out for Harry. When he sent the patronus, that was special. I wished I could go back and take away all the resentment I felt towards his character.
Actually in the books snape had been unconscious when lupin transformed, he was forced by dumbledore to teach Harry oclumency (and made it a nightmare for Harry), and Harry only pretended to drink the veritaserum but it was still real
@@truemystery9 That’s not true. Why would you comment something with such certainty that’s completely false? In the books Harry poured out the first Veritaserum and when Umbridge wanted more Snape told her he didn’t have any left.
@@solidsnaker1992 yes, yes he would have. Snape never wanted Harry to get killed, we don't know for certain if he grew to truly care abouts him, but he would've taught him occlumency even if albus wouldn't have give him orders
I usually talk about in the books but in the movies it’s not that snape gave him “fake” serum he just didn’t have any due to umbridge using it all on other students. Her back up plan was to use the crutiaters curse on Harry.
He also made sure harry never got hurt for no reason lile when he stopped lockhart from making ron duel Harry as he said rons wand could cause harm to harry. He also said to harry ill get rid of that snake for you. He also cared tha harry was good at school.
who do you think told Dumbledore and the order of phoenix that Harry and dumbledore’s army are probably heading to the department of mysteries? it was Snape
Dumbledore wasn't there then. Umbridge was the headmistress, though legitimately. He may have done everything he was asked by Dumbledore, but he decided how to do it. He was a double agent for crying out loud
I’ve said this a thousand times. SNAPE did NOT care about Harry, in the grand scheme of things, snape was just a huge simp, he devoted his life to Harry’s mom, and ONLY looked out for Harry because of how obsessed he was with his mom, he HATED Harry because he reminded him of his father so much.
I used to think that when he shields the three from the werewolf attack that he was simply doing his job as a teacher, protecting students. But now I see he was probably doing more than that
No. In the book dumbledore said snape gave him faker verotaserum. So even if harry drank it nothing will happen. Harry just didnt know and did extra steps when he didnt need to
I believe it was extra tough on Harry as he didn't want him to end up killed by Voldermort just like his parents. Deep down Snape loves and cares about Harry
The thing is that Snape sees his father in him, so even though Harry is not like his dad and actually a great guy, Snape cannot unsee the father. But when it comes to protecting a student or the person Dumbledor wanted him to protect he obviously does so. He may detest Harry but his duties are more important
First thing) Snape's a professor, he must protect the students, and it was dumbledore who told him to be careful with quirrel so he was the only one who would know who was doing the curse 2) in the book he didn't know Harry and his friends were inside the shrieking shak, he went following lupin, and in the books Snape is unconscious when lupin transforms 4) he only teaches Harry because dumbledore makes him do it. And he even stops giving him classes because Harry saw some of his memories, showing that Snape cared more about his reputation than teaching Harry something REALLY important 5) first of all, not a single teacher liked umbridge, not even Snape, and all of them tried to make her life harder. But even if this was not the reason why he didn't give her the veritaserum, HE IS A PROFESSOR, he must protect the children and not giving her the potion was a way of doing that 6) he was on dumbledore's side, he obviously was going to protect Harry, but he didn't really cared for him (in my opinion) Last one) he did this under the orders of Dumbledore
Snape is the best character because everyone thought in the beginning that he would be the mean teacher but then he becomes the best in the entire movies and books
Technically, Snape didn't teach Harry Oclumemcy due to the sessions always ending in back and forth jabs between one another. It also caused Snape to end the sessions for good when Harry Protego'd the spell to see Snapes memories
Alan as snape was hot🔥 His demeanor, tread, the way he carried this look with stylish cloak was perfect,Alan is more snape than the snape himself ❤i can't think of some other person as snape!
To me, Snape is the coolest character after you realize he was only trying to help, and he had to play sort of a middle man game. Acting like he was supporting Voldemort and also keeping Harry alive until the end.
He really wants to be emo after Lilly's death. But deeply, he really cared for Harry. When he made the patronus similar to Lily, i was broken 💀😭. He really did his best to protect Harry without exposing himself to the death eaters and Voldy (well till the end at least 😥)
It was a nice movie addition in deathly hallows pt 2 that I missed for years, but during his duel with McGonagall, he deflects one of her curses at the Carrows before jumping out the window. Personal favorite moment. 💚💛
This was probably already mentioned, but Dumbledore wanted the occulmency lessons to really allow Harry to learn legilimency to peer into Tom's mind, Dumbledore had to have noticed that Harry was acting like Tom so maybe Harry's confused teenage emotional energy could in turn affect Tom thus affecting his decision making skills. Dumbledore didn't care about Tom reading Harry's mind cuz Harry had no battleplans at the time, he wanted Harry's mind wide open to Tom's, not closed.
He didn’t give her fake veritaserum, Harry just didn’t drink it and instead just pretended to do so, then when given a chance he threw it away. In the books at least.
I still have to question why Snape is literally the only one in the whole school trying to mutter a counter curse Dumbledore was literally the defense against the Dark arts teacher before he became headmaster why was he not chanting a counter curse And you can't tell me that McGonagall didn't know how to identify a curse or how to counter one. So why is it that Snape is the only one muttering a counter curse. I'm just saying there should have been a lot more staff members trying to save Harry's life then the one who doesn't even really know how he feels about Harry
That last one when he told off Bellatrix seemed more like it was for Dumbledore and Voldemort as he said "no! He belongs to the dark lord." That wasn't really protecting him
Its ever better when u remember that sirius almost got severus k*lled by the same werewolf when they were kids and snape STILL covered golden trio with himself without even a wand
He didn't give a shit about Harry. He was committed to the greater good, he was repenting his betrayal to the lived one. It was never about Harry when it comes to Snape.
I didn't understand at first why he was so mean to harry. I had to watch the movies at least 6 times to understand mostly everything and now I feel like he was protecting harry as his son. He never had a son and he always made sure Harry was okay.
Well in the book its much clearer, basicly Snape got curios why Lupin walked out of the school one time per year. He then found a werewolf, James saved him. James also bullied Snape and when James died Snape didnt feel right to hate James since he saved his life so he protected Harry so they were even and he could continue to hate James.
@@ufobob1615 what…? I don’t remember any of that. I could’ve sworn that in the books he only offered to protect Harry because of his love for Lily. If he was protecting Harry because of James, then he wouldn’t have held a grudge and he wouldn’t have been bullying Harry for reminding him of his dad. He’s only doing it because he figuratively wants to protect Lily’s child. Not James’ child and not Harry, but Lily’s child.
@@lordvoldemort5725 Well yeah that isnt wrong either, maybe protected him cause he hated Voldemort cause he killed Lily and he maybe thought that Harry could avenge Lily for him by killing voldemort.
@@ufobob1615 Snape, as well as everyone else who knew about Trelawney’s prophecy, already knew that Harry was the one who had to defeat Voldemort (or avenge Lily). That was the reason everyone wanted Harry to be protected in the first place. Snape’s need and want for that may have been much more personal, but he isn’t special for having that reason. The real and main reason was flat out obvious: It was because he was Lily’s son, and Dumbledore basically told him that if he loved Lily, then he’d want to protect Lily’s son. That was the main reason, and that was the reason given to us in the books and movies.
