Left out is what has been called the "rock n' roll vibrato" where instead of moving the finger back and forth perpendicular to the fret, the finger moves parallel to the fret. This only raises but does not lower the pitch, and as such is not technically a true vibrato, yet it can be effective, especially on the lower end of the fingerboard where the standard vibrato may be impractical. One such place is the G note on the 6th string descending out of the B7 chord in bar 12 of Villa Lobos' Prelude No. 1.

I agree! But we have to widen this observation. A good vibrato does not directly come from the fingers but even more from the lack of tension in forearm and hand. By using the "weight" of forearm and hand you're able to create a real lush vibrato to my opinion. Just check my video: "Vibrato, the final truth".

I´ve noticed that vibrato also comes from the right hand. When you "caress" the string rather than plucking it, the vibrations in the string are very soft and uniform, this way doing a vibrato with your left fingers becomes much easier

Vibrato in fact is no more or less than changing the exact pitch: Sometimes above it and sometimes beneath it. Only the left hand can accomplish that.

To my opinion even the tension in the forearm and the fretting hand are involved. Tavi starts with putting the index finger on a string between two frets as if the finger "seems" to be the most important factor in making a nice vibrato. You need to be able to make the right movement with the fretting hand. Exercise so at first is to move the fretting hand alongside the neck in a tempo for a somewhat slower vibrato. Do not touch the neck at all but focus on lack of muscle tension in the forearm and hand. Second is to put the thumb gently on the back of the neck, still moving up and fort alongside the neck for about 3 frets. Third is to now put the finger from which you think is most convenient for you on the fretboard, somewhere around the 7th fret. No pressure at first but if you can do this exercise without too much muscle tension only then you can proceed to put the finger with more pressure in one position while remaining a lush forearm and hand. Repeat the movement you've already learned and you are there. I 've posted a video around the item "vibrato" called "Vibrato the final Truth" in the near future. Feel free to comment on it as we all learn from that. Besides that, Javi is a very good player!

Excellent explanation, one thing always I think is : from where is coming the vibrato, the wrist? And in a certain way you have an understanding Thank you

@@davidschestenger3366 Let's be honest: The way the vibrato is played by Tavi is simply great. But the root of it all lies elsewhere, not to start with a finger in a fixed position! You might check my lesson regarding vibrato if you like: "Noud Koevoets - Vibrato, the final Truth?" which in fact is a bit of a challenging title but feel free to comment on it! We can all learn from each other.

I have dream! That you Tavi will add Yamour and Lament to your repertoire att Eliteguitarst, I spend hours and hours every day to learn them since I can hardly read music. I do it by ears and looking at you playing them. It works but it's really time consuming, but I will reach the end on both, they are too beautiful to not learn how to play:)
