I cannot wait for the end of May! Nearly all my tomato seeds germinated, and I've got a good feeling about some success this year! Fingers crossed 🤞 🙏 🍅
Thank you Calikim and Camera Guy. Today in the morning I transplanted some of my tomatoes outside in my back yard, once the sun starts to go down I will go again to transplant the rest. I have a variety Cherry tomatoes and colors, some heirloom beef stakes and a variety of regular size heirloom tomatoes as well. Thanks to your tips, as to when to plant, what to plant, when to start I am doing so much better then last year. I live in Santa Clarita ( Six Flags) our heather is similar, hotter in my area though. I started because my 80 yr old mother to keep her occupied and help with depression. She is very happy and excited and tells every one, she plants and grows veggies in containers. I let her have all the credit ha ha ha. I work and now gardening I have so much work but I love it, my mom is enjoying it, she just walk out to her tiny patio and grabs her lettuce, sugar peas and soon warm weather veggies. Gardening is really helping me with my mom and through this pandemic year. Happy Gardening season!
Hello from Appletree Urban Homestead (on RU-vid) from Perth Australia. I just found your channel and subscribed. We have just started our own little urban homestead but unfortunately our poor vegie garden got decimated with the extremely hot weather we had earlier in the year here in Perth Australia. We are having to start all over again and I am documenting our journey to self sufficiency on my new RU-vid channel.
Love these tips! Mine are very small so not ready and still in the 40's in San Jose, CA at night so not ready just yet. I have an indoor Tiny Tim with tons of flowers and getting ready for tomatoes! I can't wait!
Sorry I haven't been around lately, I fell in my garden and crashed into our metal fire pit, smashed my shin into a huge stone nearly breaking it (ER visit), wrist sprain catching my fall and trashed my back! I planted well over a hundred herbs and veggies using the tips I learned from you over the past year, thanks for all your great videos as always.
I have followed you for quite some years and every year I still learn new things! Amazing! I looooved the tip with the black plastic bags to warm up the soil. Here it still is cold in May after last frost day and my tomato seedlings - despite gradually hardening off - go into cell-chock every time after being being planted for at least two to three weeks before continuing to grow. Warming up the soil beforehand will surely help combat this issue! You dressed perfectly for this video, Kim. Tomato-red so to say. Will have to look for that sweet t-shirt (hopefully available in big sizes). ;-)
My tomatoes got some cold damage this year. Maybe a little sunburn too. But now that it’s warming up, they are slowly but surely greening up and growing. They should be just fine in another week or so. Going to get into the upper 70s next week.
So many great tips!! And how cool is using sea grass?!! Wowza! Question: do you think we could use a black trash bag like a shade cloth, but for protection against the cold at night, as long as it taken down during the day? I don’t have any milk jugs around and I’m trying to come up with another idea. Thanks for the video!
I was so happy to receive my order yesterday! I appreciate the detailed instructions on all of the seed packaging. Your book is wonderfully written! I’m most excited about the Tiny Tim tomato seeds; can’t wait to plant the amazing varieties in the seed collection!
bought 20 seed packets of new things to grow and because i’m in canada there’s a smaller selection of fabric pots, but i found some at a local store today, and i normally order smart pots on amazon. really exited for it to become warmer!!
Love all the red in this video -- how tomato-ey. Mac is such a star in this one, especially when you're preparing your liquid feeds! Thanks for the great tips.. always such great info in your videos!
all the kelp and sea grass/weed came from newfoundland because early 1900s it was all about fishing and gardening so i’m going to the beach and doing the same she was doing in that video and collecting kelp. great video
I loved seeing Ranka’s garden!! Thank you for all those tips. I’m going with just cherry tomatoes this year. My Sun Gold seedlings are doing great under my grow lights and I bought a organic Husky Cherry red from Home Depot. I love this variety and I scored big bcuz there were 3 plants in the pot I bought there. Always look bcuz you can find a pot with more than 1 in there. For my Sun Gold I need a large tomato cage. Where did u get those Kim?
Loving this series. I'm a little nervous now about transplanting my seedlings because I live in eastern NC, and once it gets warm, it goes almost straight to upper 80s, and then mid to upper 90s with tons of humidity. I have a question though unrelated to tomatoes. Can I grow things like lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower (cool weather veggies) indoors over the summer? I keep my house pretty cool and I have grow lights. I'd love to have some fresh lettuce to make salads with all of the tomatoes and cucumbers I hope to harvest for my first pretty big garden.
Hi Virginia, the red planters are a repurposed galvanized metal pipe (came from a local farmer) cut into lengths and painted red. We love the color splash and visual interest it adds to the garden space. Thanks for stoping by, enjoy your weekend!
I am in Zone 7A as well in North-Central Tennessee. We're expecting snow tonight and a 34-degree overnight Thursday early morning. I lived in San Diego (Rancho Bernardo) for 22 years and my gardening was so much easier!! But we've got all of the seedlings inside tonight and will plant Thursday afternoon.
Thank you for so much great content! In an older tomato planting video, you put coffee grounds, powdered milk, finely ground egg shells, and epsom salt in the planting hole. Is that because you planted directly into the ground, and not a container? I’m a newbie, growing tomato from seed for the first time ever. I’ll be planting in a raised bed, and would love to know the best way to feed my hole. 🍅🕳😆
I have two fruit trees, One Peach and one dwarf Plum. I have had them in big containers since i bought them about 3 years ago. I am in Missouri and Im trying to figure out if its too late to replant them in the yard in full sun.
I cringed when you poured water over the tomato leaves...it might be airy and warm where you are but I can't get away that in Michigan! Beautiful garden, thanks for the tips!
I've always heard that the stems from the main trunk should be snipped to prevent them from rotting and possibly causing problems. I noticed you didn't do that. Does that work for you?
QUESTION: I am starting my tomato plants from seeds indoors here on Long Island, NY. Do I continue to use the grow light until I actually transplant them outdoors? Many thanks in advance.
Hi, Kim. Thank you for all the great tips! I have a question about my Igor brussels sprouts. I live in Alaska, and bought these seeds without paying attention to the days to maturity...rookie mistake. They are 200 days to maturity, so I started them in late January. I transplanted them to 4” soil blocks, and will put them in the ground once the soil is workable, mid-May or so... They are growing, and I am noticing that there is one leaf toward the bottom of each seedling that is yellowing. Is it a nitrogen deficiency, or could it be that the leaf is just done? I don’t think it’s a magnesium deficiency.
Oh I wish we could grow tomatoes & lettuce in warm weather but unfortunately Sub-Tropical Australia FORGET IT !!! We have to grow salad vegetables etc in Autumn through Winter & who feels like a salad then. Cheers Denise- Australia
hi kim, already planted my roma tomatoes. today i ordered pepper seeds it includes santa fe grande, corno di torso , sky bor and sweet banana have u tried any of them???? by the way kim, i want to share a vdeo of my garden , where to contact????? :)
Hello Rudransh - Good job - roma tomatoes are delish! I've never tried any of those peppers - let me know! Email me - calikim@calikimgardenandhome.com. Thanks for watching!
You can, however, I have found that they do better starting them indoors and in a small container first. I always say to experiment, so try a little of both methods??? Hope that was helpful! Thanks for commenting and watching! Kim
So many ways to garden, Mikey, that's one thing I love about it! Crushing them helps them break down quicker - either way works fine for mulch. Thanks for stopping by!
Agreed! One time, I planted tomatoes in a full sun spot, which receives sun first thing and last thing in the day. I then planted tomatoes that gets only afternoon shade, and I got less than half! Greatly recommend full sun
