Bon jour, Marie-Anne! I agree that hard-side spinner luggage is the way to go - I bought my parents some for Christmas so they can finally stop using their old pieces! 😂 I also want to say that sometimes the duration of your travel may require some modifications, for comfort. When my best friend and I traveled to Bali from the US, I wore some black relaxed knit pants with a hoodie and tennis shoes with compression socks. Everything was brand-new, but the flight from New York to Singapore alone was 18+ hours, so comfort was pretty much my only real requirement - lol. Merci beaucoup, as always, for your excellent tips! When I get the opportunity to finally visit the City of Lights, I will be studying your videos religiously!! 😘

In that case, I don't care that it isn't stylish. I want to find it superfast on the airport carousel without danger of mix-ups. Also, the more unusual it is, the less likely it is to be stolen. Because the more unique a piece of luggage is, the more recognizable it is.

A garish suit case that stands is less likely to be stolen. Theives don't like to stand out. Clothing, there are some plain soft t-shirts in darks colors that are comfortable. The same can be said for trousers. Plain slip on walking shoes, boots if they don't fit in your carryon. Costume jewelry you can easily replace. Small travel hair dryer. I'm not a make-up wearing person. But there are ladies who travel for business.

Is it important to have “stylish “ luggage? Aren’t there many more important considerations? I was taught to dress in a manner to show the pilots and crew respect so I still follow that edict. But I also try to remember anything can happen on a trip and dress to be comfortable but presentable in any contingencies.

Tbh, can't be bothered with looking stylish during travel. Stuff gets stolen or damaged, clothes get dirty and stinky. Luggage that stand s out is a plus: easy to keep an eye on. So true. I thought of that years ago as well. Never have been a sneaker person but my go to for flying when I was younger was a pair of two tone Doc Martens wingtips for that very reason. Should something happen. They have really good slip resistant soles that are also chemical resistant. They lace on so they will not fall off, they were comfortable for long walks (the old made in England ones... the rest not so much. You can still get the ones made in England but they are a small fortune), and enough room if your feet swell. Now I wear derby shoes that are more streamlined but still sturdy for those reasons. Just another alternative. I don't rule out sneakers all together. I have a couple pairs of ladies pumas that are their traditional old school suede that have a platform but not an extreme one. I am also going to add if you are not a sock person which these days I'm not unless it's late fall or winter... Flat Socks. Omg they are so nice if you don't like that elastic around your leg or ankle. Or it you don't like the look of socks with loafers or sneakers. They just go in your shoe like an insole but they wick moisture, add a bit of padding and are washable. I love them sioooo much.

True. Actually, Old Navy, if all places, had last fall (hope they do it again) flaired leggings in cut velvet (looks like wide wale cord), and a wide easy and that is flat and lays flat under your tops, and they look like 60's mod era cords. I work as a caregiver and do a lot of overnight shifts and want to look professional but don't want to be uncomfortable at 3am. I have them in navy, dark brown, and beige. I wore them with a v-neck top that was long but not tunic length and with the suede loafers they looked really nice. Add a chain belt and it's a nice travel look but as comfy as PJs. Also I have a find ribbed skirt with a wide waistband that I wear with similar tips and a chain belt and those travel well too. They pack well and don't wrinkle, are breathable and altogether good buys. All from Old Navy and despite the price, seem to be well make and have washed very well.

If you have a generous bust, a button down shirt is not, in my opinion, the best thing to wear. Having to worry if the buttons are gaping is not ideal. It doesn't seem to matter how much fabric is in the shirt, it all ends up round the back!

I think a button down shirt while traveling is constricging for anyone. I prefer more elastic clothing. Also, wrinkle free! There are ways to do that besides wearing T-shirts and sweatshirts, but a cotton button-down is not my go-to while flying. Especially not white!

Decades ago, shirts were designed with more buttons and always well placed to avoid gaping. Then tailoring got super sloppy & hopeless in the last 10 plus years. Also, back in my day ('70s-'80s) in my country it was cheaper and nicer to make your own - then you could check button placement & make sure it was no gap.

I have a friend who travels throughout the world. She uses soft sided luggage and her 'uniform' is cotton trousers, a tee-shirt, and designer jackets (she spends more on a jacket than I do on living expenses for a month). She always looks fabulous and comfortable in her tee-shirts.
@neresq
@neresq 4 месяца назад
We actually prefer soft-sided suitcases because: 1) they have outside pockets for things such as jackets, laptops, etc. which most affordable brands of hard-sided cases do not; 2) can be "squished" to fit into the small overhead bins on planes and trains; 3) are generally a good deal lighter than hard-sided ones; and 4) should you need to get something from inside your suitcase while traveling, are easier to open and access. That includes once you are in your hotel room because most hotel luggage racks will not accommodate the clam-shell design of hard-sided cases. Additionally, it is still possible for a thief to get into a hard-sided case by sticking something sharp into the expansion zipper, just as they would do with soft-sided cases. And, lastly, a colorful bag, whether, soft or hard-sided, is less likely to be picked up "accidentally" by another passenger. And, I don't think less of anyone because they have colorful, flowery bags. To the contrary, I am more judgmental of those who waste oodles of money on overpriced status luggage that can (and will) be damaged or stolen (actually more likely with expensive luggage) during travel.

As a frequent flyer who doesn’t exactly pack light, I can say there is little here that I agree with. I have black, hard sided suitcases because everything goes with black. Especially if everything you buy is black. My suitcases also match perfectly with the 200+ other black suitcases going around the carousel. Flat shoes are in my suitcase because my heaviest shoes, my sneakers, are on my feet. I take a small travel hair dry because I have medium length hair with a style. Not short hair that needs no styling or long hair that can just hang. I have been caught in a hotel room with a broken dryer. I do have a cashmere wrap and agree about the blankets and pillows. Bring your own. As to white button front shirts, that’s your worst idea. After a long flight, you will look rumpled and possibly stained. The red top you have on in this video is essentially a tee shirt.Solid color tees look great dressed up with a few well chosen neck scarves. Wear a black one to fly, no stains if your seat mate spills their wine, no wrinkles; goes great with your wrap. In terms of make-up, do what makes you feel your best. On vacation you don’t want to feel like you are roughing it. For clothes and hair and make-up, wear what makes you feel great when you are out and about. And yes, leave your jewels at home. Wear and take only what won’t break your heart to lose or put your safety at risk to wear.
@carolhunt2023

Other than everything in black, your perspective is refreshing. I love the part about neck scarves.

@@carolhunt2023 Actually, I was referring to my luggage and was being sarcastic, because I hate things that clash. I also tend to buy white dishes to go with any other dishes I might buy and then realize I am mostly buying white dishes. I buy black coats because I don’t want my coat to clash with whatever color I might wear under it. I have a closet filled with black coats. I do not, however only wear black. I leave for France this weekend. My travel wardrobe is mostly black and navy pants and jeans because Paris is dirty. Knit tops and graphic tees in white, blue, tan; silk neck scarves; white sneakers, tan sandals and ballet flats; jeans jacket and tan cropped trench coat. Three weeks worth of everything that goes with everything else; but black cargo pants, black knit shirt and cozy tan scarf to fly in. Definitely not ALL black. 😄

leggings, tunic, a nice fleece jacket with a hood all in nice colors sounds very nice with sensible shoes. I get it. earrings would be ok but not the confining necklace or rings possibly. I think what bothers me is the rolled out of bed look that is unkept and believe me, dirty, and I do not like sitting next to this, especially with flip flops and dirty feet that a man crossed his leg and the foot was in my area. And he did not think anything of it because people are not thinking of others sometimes. It is hard to believe that we spend all this money for a flight just to look our worst. lol....but you make a good point for comfort, health, and safety which can all be done in a lovely, clean, tidy manner. So much of this I couldn’t agree with less. But definitely leave the bling at home 1) suitcases- hard sided suitcases with zips are as easy to break into as soft sided suitcases…they cut the zips more easily than the soft bag 2) pale luggage like that is stylish only u til its first flight. Then it gets ingrained dirt, scuffs and marks on it - hard sided dark luggage while not perfect will look stylish for much longer - look at what the aircrews use. 3) hairdryers are not at every hotel, and often they are inconveniently placed - especially the ones affixed to be wall, or they are weak, or overheat etc etc. if you use one, take one - the little travel ones are now excellent 4) make up and hair styling. Do what makes you feel comfortable, confident and beautiful- whether fully styled or not even lipstick. the only things to add, moisturise, moisturise, moisturise(especially on the plane)oh and sunscreen!!!! Remember the best way to look chic and stylish is to be confident and happy, not to follow someone else’s rules! 5) ballet flats may as well be flip flops if someone rolls a bag over your foot. So,something sturdier than a ballet flat and dark, (same goes for shoes as does for luggage 6) on a long flight button down cotton shirts are a really poor choice. By 5e time you have travelled to the airport, gone through customs and security, waited, seat belts in and off, shoulder bags, security, taxis again with seat belts crisp and stylish is not something to describe a shirt (especially for longer flights). A plain tshirt with a scarf is way more stylish. 7) but definitely agree with leave he bling at home….

When I bought a black and white cow print suitcase and a bright red suitcase with flowers on it, both stood out, nobody else had similar so not much chance of a mix up. I never had problems with people going throw my bags after that. As for people looking down on me for not being chic because of my bright suitcases, that's their problem, not mine.

I was surprised how much the plane attendants liked my outfit. I paired gray knit wide leg pants with a coral linen blouse, gray cardigan and a flowy floral coral scarf. As usual, I wore my black orthopedic Mary Jane's. They all loved how "stylishly comfortable" I looked. I had an ivory knit cape and a standard pillow, too. I most certainly was aiming for comfort.

I have that set of luggage. And it really is great. But sometimes I still carry a vintage American Tourister hard, grey tweed pattern round suitcase because it is so darned cool and indestructible. It's over 70 years old and still looks like the day it was bought except I had wheels added to the bottom because it weighs a lot. When I use that I carry a great leather Vespa messenger bag that I drop my purse into and can carry a toothbrush and one change of clothes in case my suitcase. doesn't make it. No blow dryer or curling iron. I have my hair in a a short American Sasoon style cut and literally shakes out, even strait out of bed. Still looks good mussy. Eyebrow pencil, a liner and lipgloss is all the makeup I use. At 62 foundation and blush and all that add at least 10 years to my face. Oh, and a nice red lipstick. Not matte. I have a great pair of suede loafers in blush that work with my jeans and make them look classier. White blouse always and a nice tank tip for underneath if I want to wear it open. I love the wrap idea! Never thought of that. But I have used a merino poncho that I crocheted (fine gauge yarn... took me forever but it's beautiful), in cream and beige houndstooth with a black cowl top that works with everything. I guess I got the what to wear to travel down fairly well. Now if only had the money to travel these days. Being of a ... ahem, Rubenesque shape... I don't want to wear ANYTHING to make me look older and fatter. Ugh. I can't believe I got something right.

Big nope on the hard-sided luggage. If it's got a zipper so it's just as easy to break into , its non-flexiable and there is often a lack of extrior access, even the good stuff cracks and dents, and the clamshell opening instead of top opening makes it more challenging to pack because you're really packing two small cases and not one large one, and it's hard to lay out on a luggage rack because you can't just flip it open against the wall.

Thank you for your enjoyable and thought provoking video. I agree with most of it, but not the part about suitcase choices. While I want to look classy, expensive and tasteful in my attire, I don’t want my luggage to necessarily convey this. I want my luggage to stand out, scream at me and be easily distinguished from other people’s bag. Plus, if that means cheap looking, so be it. If thieves think it’s cheap looking they are less likely to grab it. I think they will more likely grab the bags that look expensive they think are much more likely to contain expensive luxury items. I am also finding that in the last year a new trend is beginning to to appear in the amenities hotels are providing. While the cost of hotel rooms have increased, many of the hotel chains are offering fewer amenities, such as the free use of irons, hairdryers, and in room coffee pot and k-cups. They are also less likely to contain free disposable make-up remover sheets, body lotions, shower caps or both a facial soap and a bath soap. I think we will probably see this trend spread to more and more hotels and much like the airlines, hotels will become more of a more bare bones operation. I think we will see hotels begin only providing basic bath soap, shampoo and a conditioner, towels, and washcloth, bed and bed linen and a television.

I have very blonde lashes, pronounced dark circles, and very pale skin. I’ve had some people ask me if I have lashes when I without mascara. So while I don’t cake my makeup on, a bit of eye shadow, mascara, lipstick or gloss and some concealer under my eyes makes me look better and healthier. My dark circles are so prominent that they look like bruises. I feel a bit pale and washed out without at least some makeup. If I was blessed with darker lashes, I’d be able to skip mascara. I think a sensible makeup application is reasonable. There are also many sweat resistant and water proof makeup products, so makeup doesn’t have to be a train wreck while on vacation.😊

As a seasoned traveller, I think this video has excellent advice. My suitcase is hard-sided as suggested but it's purple for me to easily recognize it on the carousel or in a crowd (to prevent theft); I think such an obvious colour would not be Marie-Anne's subtle taste. :) It serves my purpose very well. I would like to add two points: 1) I put two light changes of clothes in my carry-on in case my one checked luggage gets lost. 2) I travel with a hair piece for 2 reasons: I can not leave my hair "au naturel" as suggested (I would so love to!) because my own hair is too fine, very thin and sparse. A preset wash and wear hair piece, 1/2 inch longer than my own few hairs is the ideal travel companion for me: wash and dry it and it's ready to go, no fuss no muss. It doesn't matter if I've perspired all day. After a shower and a "borrowed" hair wash, I look fresh as a daisy and ready to go out for dinner. The other reason for the hair piece is that it's cooler than a wig.

Quite! Amazing, that (presumably) middle-aged to elderly women apparently flounder around, not sure what to wear and when. And presumably, eventually, after carefully following advice, arrive at their destination looking depressingly similar. Triumphantly carrying similar suitcases. The herd instinct. Take note of Iris Apfel (she was highly individualistic, very stylish), May Musk ... - women who don't follow slavishly some guidelines or necessarily take the safe route. Sloppy clothes? No. Individuality? Yes! Hairdryers? Maybe some B&B's don't provide? And surely, ladies - you are not travelling for the first time?

I am a very frequent traveler, and I have traveled all over the world - with all due respect, I disagree (in some cases strongly) with much of the advice given here. Item 1 - suitcases. Unless you have a lot of money to buy the very high end luggage that comes with a lifetime warranty, it is a known fact (talk to travel experts and flight attendants/pilots) that soft sided luggage is generally better/more durable than hard side luggage. Also darker colored luggage generally hides dirt, scratches, etc., way better than light colored luggage. Theft prevention and ease of identifying your luggage should supersede “fashion” - that floral designed luggage will not be easily stolen. Hard side luggage can be easily broken into - I know this firsthand. 2- Hair dryer: it is hit or miss whether there will be a hair dryer in your room (even in some high end hotels). And there have been many occasions when the hairdryer that is there is in poor working order or does not enable the styling you need. Carrying a small, portable, lightweight one you are comfortable with eliminates the uncertainty. BTW - I use adapters all the time and have had no issues and today there are now all-in-one adapters available that eliminate the need for carrying several individual ones. 3/7 Hair and Makeup - On one hand you talk about dressing well and being fashionable but suggest that one eliminates routine hair and makeup prep?? Also, people who live in hot climates wear makeup and style their hair routinely, so why should travelers use temperature as a reason to change these personal routines? One dresses and applies makeup to feel good about one’s self - that does not disappear on vacation! 4 - Shoes. While I do not wear flip flops ever, there is nothing wrong with wearing them or other opened toed sandals for plane travel, especially if it is a long flight. Feet can swell and perspire- open toed shoes let feet breathe and relax better. Closed toe shoes can become tight and painful depending on your foot structure. Clogs, like flip flops, are a personal choice in my opinion. Comfort should be paramount, I believe, when choosing footwear for a plane flight and that is a very individual determination that should not be driven by fashion primarily. 5 - As with shoes, blankets versus shawls depends on how cold you get on planes. If you do not trust the blankets distributed on the plane, bring what you need (blanket or shawl/wrap) to be warm - fashion should not dictate this choice. 6 - T-shirt vs Buttoned collared shirt: Looking good when traveling is great, however, one needs to also be pragmatic. Wearing white or light colors is asking for trouble - makeup smears, coffee stains, water marks, food stains, dirt smudges, etc., - will all show up well. There are nice/dressy T-shirts which are acceptable in my opinion, especially on young people (I saw nothing problematic with the young person you showed in a designer type T-shirt). If you are a larger body size person, a buttoned down shirt with a collar will become uncomfortable and badly wrinkled on a long plane flight (I’ve seen it) and will show grease marks if you sweat. Once again, comfort and practicality need to be balanced with fashion here. 7 - Makeup. Refer to my previous comments above in 3/7. I do note that the statements made in the video correlating hot weather to not using makeup seems very Eurocentric. Women wear makeup year round in hot climates- they just use the appropriate makeup in the correct manner. Furthermore, 1- not all travelers originate from cold climates, and 2 - some people (women and men) may have certain issues that they prefer to cover up with makeup regardless of where they are living/visiting. A more helpful suggestion would be to provide information on what and how to adjust makeup when in hot climates/traveling, versus making the broad inference that “stylish” women do not need makeup when on vacation. 8 - I agree in principle about the bling - it attracts robbers to travelers. However, once again, a very Eurocentric statement is made in the video regarding being able to buy what you need. Not everyone will have the financial ability to do so, and one cannot always find what one needs/is looking for, depending on in which country/city you are vacationing. Pairing your jewelry to the outfits you take on travel is a better way to minimize how much you take while ensuring you have what you need.

Hair care is a challenge when traveling, especially in the summer time, with the sun and possibly salt exposure. My hair turns into a frizzy mess in no time flat if I let it go natural. After a lot of trial and error, however, I have discovered that if I applied a small amount of Blue Magic (a grease for African American hair) to rinsed but abundantly wet hair, it helped trap the moisture from the conditioner in my hair. Further, I air dry it slowly (put the hair in braids for curls or a bun for waves). The hair is a tad bit sticky on the first day, but soft after that, and not dry. For a two week trip, all I need is a Carmex lipbalm tub full. Certainly takes less room than a blow dryer, round brush, and flattening iron. And much better for the hair.

I am appalled at what I see people wearing on the plane. Do they have no self respect? Looking stylish and put together doesn't have to be expensive at all. Hard shell suitcases take up a lot of room in a small hotel room. The hipper is in the middle so you have to open the case completely to access contents. The older style suitcase with the zipper on the edge of the suitcase allows you to flip open the top and takes up half the space in your room.

I see what you mean but I don't find it an issue Margaret. I unpack so that there is no need to keep opening the case 👍

I prefer hard shell ones because they won't pick up bedbugs.

I will be leaving for a 15 day trip to London/Norway in the near future. Because the majority of the trip will be a cruise, I have the advantage of only having to pack and unpack only a couple of times. I do use packing cubes in order to organize my outfits so I’m only pulling what I absolutely need to have until I’m on the cruise. All of that being said, I love your suggestions, but would also add that a crossbody bag to keep your essentials safe is also wise. I have a Lo and Sons leather crossbody, but for this trip I’m planning on taking a Travelon small crossbody as I will also be attending a concert in London at the Olympic Stadium which has size restrictions. The Travelon bag has the added safety feature of twist and lock lobster clips so it’s harder for a thief to just pickpocket any items out of my bag.

I would love to mention also, if you like to wear loafers sickles or tennis or certain shoes sickles or don't like the elastic around your leg or ankles in flight... Flat Socks. I love those so much. They fit like an insole, add a bit of padding and you wash them like socks. And you don't skink your favorite shoes wearing them without socks. Or those little ballet flats... perfect. So nice.

So your viewers know, there are 2 things you need to have for safe energy usage in a foreign country. (1) the plug adapter…the prongs are different AND (2) the VOLTAGE of the item. People ALWAYS seem to forget the 2nd of the 2. Just have a plug adapter is never enough.

I wear a pair of black stretch dress trousers, a pastel short-sleeved shell, and a cardigan when I travel, with a pair of black loafers. I pack a pashmina (rolled into a cylinder and held with hair ties) in my carry-on, along with a spare set of undies and a different t-shirt. I'm prepared for just about anything ordinary travel can throw at me.

Hmmm. I have to say that I dislike hard cases to travel with. Since I take only 1 bag on any trip, I have 3 sizes of quality luggage - totally unmatched and not the same brand. I pick the one most suited to the trip. I don’t think there is anything wrong with a floral or paisley set of luggage… they are a wink to your personal style and whimsey. I think I travel as a smart-chic lady. I am dressed very practically for where I’m going. I’m usually wearing my chosen coat and biggest shoes so neither needs to be packed. Shoes that will be comfortable despite the swelling airplanes cause. I will be wearing something with pockets so all travel documents are handy and on my person. And I carry a school-sized backpack because I don’t check anything I can’t afford to lose (electronics, chargers, money, jewelry, glasses, ID, plus one full change of clothes) Vraiment pratique, n’est pas?

I bought a Monos brand hard sided carry-on for my last European trip and for the first time I had packing cubes and I traveled for three weeks in all kinds of locations with just the smallest Monos bag in ocean blue and a beautiful Away everywhere bag in coast blue. I was so pleased with both of my choices!

Anytime I travel during non-summer seasons, I wear a sweater dress with tights/thin leggings and boots. The only disadvantage is getting through TSA, but there are advantages: Room in my luggage for smaller shoes. Warmer on flights. More protective if raining at destination. Stylish.

For the plane, I layer my serums and creams for hydration. Lipgloss and some eyeliner and spf for the vacation.

@@charis6311 hi! In the United States, SPF stands for sun protection factor and can range from around 20-75 or higher. I should have just said sunscreen!😂

As I see it, if you have a good flattering hair cut, you don't need hair dryers and curling irons on a regular basis. I just use a hair dryer to quickly dry my hair if I'm in a rush.

You do need a hairdryer if your style requires a round brush and blow-drying for wave and volume.

Bright colors and unique patterns make your luggage easy to spot on the carousel. I would take those gaudy flowers in a heartbeat. My classic black bag looks like every other bag on the line and I have to keep ribbons and colorful tags attached just to find it.

I have very long hair down past my waist and I travel quite a bit. I always wear my hair up in a bun and put on a thick headband that covers most of my head when I travel because I am scared of getting lice from the plane :0 I am not sure if this would actually even help, but I get grossed out thinking about my hair touching the seats and headrests where so many others have sat. I also always travel with a mini bottle of dry shampoo.
