You can take a straight run up if you're taking an outside foot shot. I find using the outside foot to curl easier than the inside foot shot.

Keep in mind!!! Techniques vary from person to person I shoot my knuckle shots by leaning back because the ball dips too much... And I dont want the football rolling on the ground

You can kick a ball that is in front of you. I learned the technique from the "blast the ball video". You have to lift your hip on your kicking leg and maintain an angle on your knee. It is called the V swing in the video.
