1. Are your fingers as light as they can be? 2. Practice with your left hand and be able to play with similar agility and clarity as your right hand (don't hide). 3. Observe and practice dynamics, accents, and all the other expressive markings. 4. For any difficulty you face, know exactly WHY it is difficult in order to find a SOLUTION. (Isolate the problem instead of practicing the whole section repeatedly). 5. Recognize and study patterns and their harmonic intensity. 6. For alignment of fast notes: Be ready, No unnecessary gesture, No accent. 7. Don't blaze through important landmarks/pivoting points.
omg this video is a godsend! I'm in the edge of tears after seeing this video!!!! This video is really addressing ALL the problems I face and it gives practical solutions rather than "you need to practice more"! The key problem is not "practice more", but how to practice, and I struggled for weeks and became so frustrated. I decided to search on RU-vid for suggestions. Wonderful tutorial! All Chopin's 24 etudes are works of art. I consider this piece the most difficult among all his etudes because while its structure is simple, the dynamics and rhythm of playing this piece totally demonstrate a pianist's imagination and creation (musicality). 👍❤
This is by far not the hardest this focuses on 1 specific technique 10 no 2 is way harder the fingers 3,4 and 5 are used to play chromatic scales at a rapid tempo
Thank you SO much for the video. The hardest part of this piece when I learned it was not the speed, but the choreography of the hand. I literally spent a couple of hours just to figure out where I should place my right hand in the first phrase.
I was never brave enough to face this challenge....! But with all these tips I feel more confident..! Thank you! I'd love a video with tips for Chopin's 1st ballade...

I´m sure she has studied this etude for months in the past and got back to it many times, and that week was to keep it fresh and make the tutorial. She´s amazing. No doubts about it.
This was a very helpful video. Op 10 No. 4 is a difficult piece to master on your own - especially if piano/music is not your main job. But the challenge was made easier by content like this. The reminders to focus identifying and zeroing in on the specific difficulties rather than "blazing through" were especially beneficial. The 1-4 transition on clsoing arpeggio was also disturbing to me - glad to see I wasn't the only one flummoxed by that. Jeewon Lee - this is excellent content - thank you.
Hello! I very much enjoy your tutorials. You’re a beautiful player. In this 10/4 what I especially like is that you don’t build up super climaxes continuously during the piece you see it as a whole, and finish it off nicely. I wish it was a little bit easier to hear what you have to say over the piano music… is there a transcription? 🙏

@@CyrusandAurelius I will consider making a video on "road to a conservatory." But I can tell you right away that finding a teacher that will see you week to week, give you appropriate repertoire assignments, and guide you through preparing for competitions/auditions/recitals, is probably the first thing. In my opinion, learning to play an instrument can be a self-study for enjoyment but it is nearly impossible to gain competency without a good teacher.

Very clean execution and with the right pedal. Just one small but significant note: In bars 47,48,49 Chopin does not write the arpeggio sign on the chord in the left hand, therefore he wants the chord to be distributed between the two hands. Why don't you play B sharp with your right hand thumb? Many pianists ignore this detail and it is a shame to hear an arpeggio instead of a chord!

in the 12:58 section would it be okay if i used a 1-3-2-5 fingering instead of 1-2-1-5? i feel like my thumb locks up if i play 1215 and gets a bit awkward and 1325 feels more fluid or should i just try and work with 1215? great video btw, helped a lot :)
Yes. It depends on your tempo, but 1325 fingering should sound more articulate with 16th notes more pronounced, if you can manage it. If that fingering works for you when your thumb starts on D# (and then third finger on E), you can stay consistent with 1325 fingering.
Unfortunately I have a bit of difficulty in understanding English, and I tried to understand what he meant from the examples, which I followed closely. A consideration: in the small modulating bridge that leads to the resumption of the main tempo (bars: 47-50) Chopin writes the chords with the left hand without arpeggio. To be able to respect this writing, you must play the B sharp with the right hand. The same problem arises in batt. 11; Did Chopin forget to write the arpeggio?
From the time you first started to work on this piece to playing at tempo - how long did it take?? I’ve heard it takes a year to get some music in your DNA so to speak.
It’s hard to put an exact period of time on it .. everyone is different .. with different problems in this piece to overcome and , don’t forget , different amounts of time available to them. Some students come gifted with an ability to pick out the chord structures and assimilate the “way” of the piece quicker too .. others need to literally learn bit by bit .. don’t get disheartened though .. you might think “wow I’ll never get it like that “ right now but honestly it’s amazing how quickly you improve . She is spot on though .. focus on the “boring” bits you can’t quite get and don’t be tempted to keep going over the fun bits you do .. identify what it is that is stopping you doing what you KNOW it should sound like .. but doesn’t quite ? Don’t overplay it either .. your hands will have enough before you sometimes !

Would you mind sharing what you do for the LH octaves in the finale at bar 71-74 ? Do you have a five on all the octaves (fives to fives)? I can’t tell you’re playing so fast. On bar 72 I’m using 1,3 to 5 revolving around the 3 but it’s not very accurate, so why bother? I just don’t have big enough hands. Might as well just stick to fives all the way. I’m assuming that you’re watching your left hand maybe more than you’re right. thank you I appreciate any help.
@@JeewonLeepianothat’s great bc a teacher I was formerly working with used threes and fours and fives and it wasn’t a consistent pattern. I think if you have a consistent pattern that’s one thing but to have to memorize a random pattern it’s too confusing. I’m going to work fives and I’ll get back to you and let you know how it is. Thank you for releasing me from a tyrant! haha!
