#8 : Fence in tournaments regularly, at least one per month. It's one thing to bout in practice it's another to pull it off in a tournament under pressure.

there is #9 from me - I personally recommend to keep a notepad, where you take down notes after training with coach (what have you worked on), what you need to work on, theories in fencing, things you need to improve, workout routines, analysis of your opponents on the strip - their weapon/grip, their body complexity (tall, short, fast, slow, skinny, chubby), their attitude, their footwork, their set of techniques, their combination and noticiable sequences, if they are into flicks or arm hits, mostly in defense or mostly aggressive. This is a perfect cheat sheet to keep track of your opponents before or after you encounter them.

Welcome to the fencing crowd folks! Yes, the age doesn't matter too much. I used to encounter several older folks who are actually very skilled. They are slow, yet precise in their hits and timing.

I'm 22 rn, and I'm gonna try this sport for the first time in 2 Weeks. I'm extremly hyped tbh. Fencing looks awsome. I hope I like it and (as a competetive person) that I still have the chance to become really good at it.

I've did fencing in my old school for like 2 months, and now im learning fencing again with my new coach and just did a tournament with him to be able to use the foil, i used only plastic blades for 3 months straight and now i am moving onto foil, i got permission :) I'm really interested in fencing and i would like to continue in doing in playing the sport. At home, i would watch videos, and think to myself of how to improve, i also practice at home in my spare time if i don't have extra classes XD

These are amazing pieces of advice!!! I recently started Fencing and am looking to learn everything! I need to gain more confidence when it comes to bouts because I feel like I have a lot of good knowledge behind me, but when I bout I get so nervous and seem to forget everything. I know I have to practice so much more and am working on that! Thank you for your awesome videos!!

The great thing about fencing is that you have a lot of flexibility in how you play the game to your strengths. We had several older people who were able to comfortably keep up with all the teenagers there despite sometimes having a 40+ year difference between them. You don't have to be a rabbit bouncing all over the strip to be a good fencer.

Fantastic video and wouldn't disagree with any of those tips nor the order they are in. Some other things that I have found to help over the years. Eat more healthily. Does not have to be crazy but more fruit, veg, water etc will help a lot. Referee matches. It helps you as a fencer if you know what the ref is looking for but also seeing different actions from a side on view. Lastly I cannot emphasise how important competition is. It really does show you what is and is not working and because the event is much more pressurised (everyone wants to win) it shows how well you deal with your fencing mentally too.

While I appreciate the good advice, I’d remind people that “telling” isn’t “teaching” - the distinction is important. The necessary feature of teaching, that telling doesn’t demand, is a diagnosis of what is already known. Too many coaches tell their students what they don’t know before finding out (and reinforcing) what the student already knows, and the skills they’ve already obtained. A person can only build upon what is already known, and the deeper what is already known is understood (by both student and teacher) - the more performance is adjusted and improved. Suggestion #5 speaks to this, but developing self-directed self-analysis protocols requires its own set of skills and techniques. To know what is to be learned next, what I appreciate seeing is a video that discusses how to obtain, record and analyze what is already known.

BEST TIP EVER dont be loyal to your coach try a other coaches (good coach has to push you to your limits, not be lazy, actually know something AND believe IN YOU), and buy good gloves (cheap gloves made me not preform well on the European championship , my hand hurt a lot because they usually lack padding ) F.E do you agree with me?

Thanks for the tips! I have a question. I fence foil and I am not very good at it. My coach told me when I first started that I should do epee. I tried both but I liked foil better. I have been fencing for 2 years now and I haven’t really improved in foil, but I think it’s too late to give epee another try. Should I stay with foil or try epee?
@gi3386
@gi3386 3 года назад
I would say it wouldn’t hurt to give epee another try
@dudeofvalor9294
@dudeofvalor9294 2 года назад
Late reply but here is my take on it. Fencing takes a good amount of time to get better at. This of course increases or decreases with regards to much you put in to it. Fence once a week, well it’ll take a very long time. Fence 5-6 times a week. It’ll take less. Obvious I know but puts things into perspective. So are you too late to start Epee? No, never. The most important question is which weapon do you prefer? If it’s foil then stick with that and work hard to improve. Ways to improve for any weapon is to practice. For foil and sabre learning the rules for row is very important. Once you’ve got the rules nailed down, fencing foil (or sabre) does become easier as even if the ref doesn’t see your action, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s going on.
@ashantifan1224
@ashantifan1224 Год назад
How on earth is it "too late" ? What does that even mean? You just said you haven't improved in foil at all 🙄 meaning...give epee a try!! Why not! Good luck 😄

Have you got any advice for relaxing your wrist and shoulder while fencing? I‘m fencing epee.
@FencersEdge
@FencersEdge 4 года назад
Yes, being relaxed with your upper body, shoulders and arm is very important. It will help you react faster and with more precision. If your muscles are tight you will have bigger slower actions. I have found that breathing, stretching, shaking out the arms and rolling the shoulders are all helpful ways to relax the muscles.

i started german longsword fencing just a month before the coronavirus, so i had a very brief period of actually having an instructor. ive got a bare basics of longsword fencing, and not a lot of practice. i learn about new techniques and tips on youtube everyday, but i cant practice with a partner, try them out, and flesh out my fundamentals. so this saturday im going to an olympic fencing club to try out fencing on the strip with no sense of self preservation, hyperfocusing on your sword and not realising that you have a second hand and legs, and being unable to target valid body parts to harm someone... jokes aside, its a fun game. but people who think they know how to use a military sabre because they know how to do sport fencing sabre are stupid. ive tried getting into victorian military sabre a bit, ive got the moulinets and the basic engagement guards covered, i can lunge, recover, retreat, advance, sidestep, do passing retreats and advances, i can fleche, i can do the tippy toe thingy, and i can do the kicking retreat. though my parries need practice, and i need to react faster to opportunities and advance more aggressively, i should also work on my single-time counters because goddamn that is fun. im looking forward to trying out sport fencing! but if they dont let me have a go on the strip, ill be disappointed. ill probably do a rising cut just to catch them off guard lmao. ill be fencing as if i had a real sword. (meaning ill refuse to go for tippy taps and ill refuse to overextend, lets see how that plays out for me. sport fencing is just fun for me, nothing else.) ill do actually fence seriously for a couple rounds though just to see how good i can actually do.
