Rob identifies 7 platforming habits no gamer can resist. Do you display any of these weird gaming habits when you’re playing platformers? Can you think of any we’ve missed? Let us know in the comments.
We all have different habits that get us through games, but platforming games require some very special behaviour. The way we have to climb onto every distant bit of scenery to see if there’s a coin. Or the way we can’t move on to the next stage until we’ve got 100% in the current stage. Not to mention the strange faces we pull during difficult bits, or the need to always walk backwards at the start of the level to look for secrets. Maybe you don’t have all these gaming habits, but you’ve probably farmed for extra lives or become obsessed with time trials. There’s no shame in it: we’ll be competing for months once new time trials come to Astro Bot.

2 is usually correct but with Astro Bot, I deliberately left some things behind just so I could come back at a later stage because the game is too good and I didn't want it to end.

I'm a controller tilter. I also spam A even though it's not going to improve the Pokeball's chance. And I can't stop pressing the button while the character or enemy attacks in the early Final Fantasys, even though I know it'd doing nothing. I just need to feel like I'm doing something.

Hello you’ve caught me thinking about being too old to appreciate 3d platformers. I’m from the olden days of NES where you always moved the controller up and down to get Mario or whoever to jump higher (I promise it worked!) and not to mention all the swear words you hid from your parents when you KNOW YOU PUSHED THE %#$£€ JUMP BUTTON!!!

I told my partner, Emma once that if I can't do something after two attempts then I give up. Since then she says that I'm not a proper Gamer. Emma is the opposite. She has determination in her gaming life whereas in the real world she'd give up almost immediately. She's also willing to play most games and is annoyed with my willingness not to.

Something I can never resist is trying to get to some areas that are still currently out of reach even though I know or at least can guess that I have to come back later when I have the necessary abilities or they can be accessed through other areas at a later point in the game. Who knows, maybe I'm lucky and discover a glitch no one ever found before and I can glitch my way to that inaccessible area.

I just got the Astro Bot platinum and it was a grind. Those damn void levels were tough even for a long time platformer. The final level was really tough, took me like 57 tries or more. Worth it tho for the shiny fake reward that no one cares about but me. 😔

Ahh, platforming. A way of life. Yup, from collectibles, idle, running left, and immersion nods. I do indeed have a p-p-p-platform face rather in Sonic, Rayman, Crash, Little Big Planet, Spyro, etc. or Astro Bot that is indeed me. Platformers will define a portion of my gaming always in life. You forgot the more obsessive habit of drawing a detailed map of each level and labeling where all the collectables are located. Maybe even making your own atlas of every stage in any given game. Such is a sign that you're committed to a game in such a way that it monopoizes your time.

I remember when I was little, my grandmother had the first Nintendo at her house. When she was playing, you couldn't sit in front of her because her legs would kick out when she did a big jump in Mario. Buster Sword as a kid? Dude.. I was 32 when FF7 released on the Playstation. I'll be honest and say I haven't got on with platform games since the Playstation. The SNES was the last console/computer that I could tolerate playing platformers on. I'd recommend anyone go and try Manic Miner or Bounty Bob Strikes Back on the Commodore 64 if you want to experience a perfect platform game.

jumping over bottomless pits makes me feel weightlessness below my gut, inside my loin. this has been happening since Pitfall! on Atari 2600. fidelity is irrelevant, perspective is irrelevant. if it’s a chasm-jump and i do it, then i feel like i am falling. this is ever since age three. i am 47 years old

we can't forget about the grunt when it comes to long jumps as if that would have us jumping further. I did it once whilst playing a game with someone and they had no idea what noise I just made or why.

Rosie is the ultimate gamer geek. The amount of joy she gets from completing a level is the ultimate 😂. I definitely do the head forward move to make the character make the jump. Sometimes it works 😉
