We used to dig holes all the time. But you hit water long before they get this deep. We physically couldn’t dig more than a couple of feet without the water rising in. Don’t know how this happened in FL.

​​@@isabelamogosanu7777They probably didn't dig a big hole. They pulled away enough to cause the roof of a pocket that formed under the sand to collapse. So a hole the size of a bucket turned into one the size of a cistern, and the sand from the sides collapsed over them. It happens from water underground slowly digging out a cave in the sand, and eventually the roof collapses causes a small trench that refills with sand quickly, which is why you don't see them on the beach. The girl being on the bottom was probably in sand that filled with water, and drowned causing her to asphyxiate faster. If you've been somewhere that they raise and lower the water with a dam on a lake or river, you can see these caves and crevices that form under the banks when the water is low. They usually only collapse on their own during a storm, but in this case the disturbance from the kids was enough to cause it to collapse prematurely.

Parents should definitely know that kids digging holes big enough to die in is not safe. If this comes as a surprise, then maybe you shouldn't be allowed to have kids. This ain't exactly rocket surgery.

My dad rescued a kid who fell into the deep channel in a river like that. He was an older boy, and his friends were laughing at him not realizing he was in serious distress. Fortunately, Dad was standing right by him by the edge of the drop off and only had to reach out and grab him to pull him to safety. He was also a strong swimmer, so he wasn’t in danger rescuing the kid.

Just think of two women being your angels, just give you something to think about, and you pass on the experience to others. Anything can happen even in front of you. It just makes you more aware all of things around you now.

Wow. You were incredibly lucky to have those watchful women nearby. Lifeguards say that many kids drown right next to parents because it happens so fast and quietly on the beach. Drowning victims don't tend to make noises or splash around like they do on TV.

It sounds like it was the dad who was digging by the hole.

When I was a young child (late 1970s), I had heard that you can dig to China. I was determined to do just that. I had dug so far down, I bumped into the tarp the beach had installed when adding more sand after coastline erosion. I was fortunate the hole didn’t collapse. My parents were quite aware of what I was doing, they didn’t think there was a danger.

My parents always warned us never to dig snow caves because of that risk. I limited myself to digging just under the surface of snow drifts so maybe a couple inches of light snow would fall

When I was a small child I had a snow cave collapse on me too, our dog found me and led my mom to me.

I did the same for my daughter when she was little. I sprayed water on it and let it freeze. The next day I was able to stand on the “bridge” and then let her play. I was always watching her because I have heard of these stories and I couldn’t live if something happened.

100%. When I was a kid, there was a sand mound at a nearby construction site & we were climbing it when an officer yelled at us to get away from it. We went back to climb again after he left & he came back to holler at us that there could be a pocket of air inside of it & it could suddenly open up & we'd be pulled down in it & buried by sand & die. The fascination with the sand mound ended right then & there. Shout out to the Miami Lakes Florida Police officer who reamed us out that day about sand danger.

Apparently there was a small landslide and he slid down, but a small boulder rolled after him crushing his skull. Paramedics couldn't save him. I remember walking past after my paper route and seeing the police cars come roaring up and pulling Into a neighboring yard, there was a group of adults crowded around on the lawn so I couldn't see anything, but then I noticed the trail of blood leading across to the pile. I guess one of the neighbors carried him across the road. 😢

I don't understand this. Why were you digging a tunnel even? I'm Greek, I've lived my whole life on the beach and I've never seen a kid dig out a tunnel or even a very large hole in the sand. Kids will mostly play in the water.

The lifeguards made a very big mistake of not telling you you can die from it.

My mum almost drowned in a wheat silo as a kid they caught her just in the nick of time very close to death. She has had permanent claustrophobia ever since and can't even put her head underwater in a pool.

Yeah there's a lot of things like that. Here in my area we have calcium carbonate mines. The rock when pulverized into a baby powder-like consistency is very dangerous. If you fall into a silo full of it, even putting your arms out wont help. You'll quickly sink and suffocate. When they work on these the men use harnesses and have plenty of others around watching just in case.

I was only at shore, went a bit further, put my body in the water as to swim a bit in a shallow area and the waves went crazy. Sucked me in, tumbled me over. I knew I was lucky that I came back. I gripped onto the sand as much as I could and felt it slipping through my fingers. There were people around there because but all of a sudden everyone was gone and I was alone, finally managing to find myself back on the edge and gasping for air. It was embarrassing and there was no lifeguard in sight. Or maybe they didn’t care who knows

Another danger is when people don’t fill up after their “dig” and someone trips or breaks a leg walking the beach. Even shallow holes can be dangerous. 😢
