7 Years of Progression - Javelin Throw - Leevi Lindi

Here is a little compilation of all the throwing clips I have been saving for years. The first videos are all the way back from 2014, when my PB with the 700 g javelin was 39,46 m, the last clips being from last season when I threw my current PB of 69,95 m with the 800 g.
I have managed to keep up pretty solid progression throughout the years, so hopefully this might help someone to keep on trying even though at the moment you would be way behind your competition. After all, it all comes down to consistency and enjoying what you are doing. Most of the guys that threw 20-30 m further than me have already quit.
Get out there and do what you love.
Suomeksi:

Well done man, fingers crossed for you. Loved the sport, PB at 69,83m at the age of 20 (800g), couple of training throws around 75m, and then I dislocated my shoulder during weightlifting. Doctors told me possible surgery outcome was qiute uncertain so I quit. Life goes on, it's already 23 years ago and I have other hobbies to enjoy in life, but still love watching athletics any time, especially javelin. Good luck out there, and well done with the progress. Greetings from Czech Republic ..... you know... we love javelin here🙂

wish i could throw javelin they dont have it that often in the states i tried it once with a 800g got 48m i was 12 or 13 at the time i dont remember and that took about 15 attempts i throw discus now in high school as a freshmen i got a 114 foot throw as pb i dont like discus i just do it cuz we are told we have to throw at least one event to run for three otherwise we only get to run 2 events so i do it i run the mile and 800 and 800 relay or 2 mile if im really tired due to the lack of people doing it i normally win it when im tired my best mile is 5 min 4 seconds and my best 800 is 2 min 17 seconds and my best 2 mile is a pitiful 15 min 43 seconds so if i am not the only one doing it i lose instantly and i do it with my friend matt cuz when i dont do it he is forced to to have a person in every track event and i normally beat him in everything he does all my events but instead of doing the mile he throws shot his mile is about a 7 min 55 second mile pretty slow but better than average and his 800 is normally around a 3 min flat best being 2 min 47 seconds once im looking to do the 400 and was hoping someone here would have some tips cuz yeah im nervious about it cuz i suck at sprinting but i got a 52 second first lap in a 800 when i was putting all my effort into the first lap to not get lapped on a relay and made a senior throw up cuz he tried catching my pace fun meet sad we lost tho i ran my second lap in 2 min for context of how much that put me out on energy but first place in meets for the 800 is normally around 55 seconds to a minute so with that in mind i think i could be good at it so if anyone wants to help me out comment suggestions on the 400 cuz ive never done it and its summer so im practicing with friends on the team but the coach is gone till fall when cross country starts and then ill have to run 3 miles every meet cuz that the only event in cross country so i need things to practice and exercises that will improve my 400 meter pls

What one did you use at 14-15, I want to get one, but it is hard to find one that is well built, and affordable. I just throw an arrow around right now for fun with a pb at 57 yards, IDK what that is in meters, but for an arrow I feel like it is pretty good, better than most, if not all kids my age, and most adults. I only took 2 or 3 steps, so I don't think it was the best of my capabilities.

Very impressive jump from 2019 to 2020. Must have felt great throwing 60+ in season opener! What do you think made the main difference in 2019 vs 2020? More strength perhaps?
@leevilindi
@leevilindi 3 года назад
Thank you! Yeah, my strength shoot up like never before that winter, I went from for example 150 kg squat to 175 kg and from 105 kg clean to 120 kg. I also added overweight throws quite a bit. But maybe the most important thing was a little "lower" release not completely over the head. I'm pretty sure it added distance to pull and therefore release speed, and I managed to throw through the point a lot easier than in 2019.

Brother, what is your height and weight? 😊
@enigma7791
@enigma7791 2 года назад
Technique is very sound and now it is a case of power development. Take a look how the Germans do it with Petra's javelin sled machine. Very interesting how they develop that set of throwing muscles. Also take a look at the sort of gym weights the top guys are moving in clean, bench other power moves. Do the ankle, hip rotation drill over and over again programme your body to involve your entire body in the throw. Watch Jan Zelezny repeating this move over and over again in training. That was the key for him...all of his body into the throw. Notice how he does it very very quickly even when drilling it in practice, get the mind and body used to whipping that ankle and hip into the throw. But well done you are on course for an Olympic appearance one day.
@leevilindi
@leevilindi 2 года назад
Thanks, good points! I'll try my best even though Olympics might not be a realistic goal for me.
@fatpotato190
@fatpotato190 3 года назад
So much time spent on what is relative little improvement Such a thing is not something I'd ever consider in pursuing as it has no practical application outside that of the realm of Olympic sports Getting better at it is good. So long as that effort can be transported into a use outside of it, I'd say
@leevilindi
@leevilindi 3 года назад
In my opinion "the thing" in sports, athletics and other individual sports especially, is that it really truly doesn't (and doesn't have to) make sense to anyone else than the athlete himself. There's a Greek word 'arete' that describes pretty well what sports mean to an athlete; living to one's full potential. Obviously physical capability is just one aspect of a person's potential, but it definitely can be an important part of it. In my opinion you develop good qualities when you try your best at improving in sports: you learn to know yourself and your limits, you realize the importance of working/resting etc, you learn to deal with disappointments and failures and then again you get to experience the feelings of success and accomplishment. And it's easier to face these things in the realm of sports than in "real life" so to say.

The best tip I could give is probably to learn to throw with your whole body. The energy transfer from feet to the arm is crucial and it definitely takes time to get it right. Also building a solid strength base will help.

seeing your improvement over the years, i wonder what had the most influence in throwing so far, was it mostly because of improving your technique or rather because of getting stronger/increase of strength? Like is it more the way of throwing OR rather your muscle strength that makes the javelin fly far?
@leevilindi
@leevilindi 3 года назад
Very good question! It's really hard to say which one is more important, but I would guess both getting stronger/faster and improving technique have had somewhat equal effect. My squat has improved from ~80 kg to 200 kg for example, so it naturally has something to do with the progress. And the change in technique is quite big too. In my opinion, the increased strength level makes it possible to throw with better technique. Also, the year when I didn't improve my PR I really didn't get physically stronger either

Oh, that's a huge progress. I recently became very interested in javelin throwing. But I'm 21. Don't know if it's a good age to start. Never had an experience in l.a. Had been doing fencing since 7 to 14 y.o. though. All the way since then I haven't been doing any sport professionally. But was trying to keep myself in shape, playing some basketball for fun, working out. What do you think, is there any perspective in javelin throwing for me or it's too late? Besides, I'm quite good at sprint. 100 meters in 11 sec without training.
@leevilindi
@leevilindi 3 года назад
Thanks! And I don't think that it's necessarily too late to start! Most of the top guys have started young, even a lot younger than me, but considering your natural speed I would guess you could be gifted in javelin. Of course throwing a javelin requires quite a specific skillset so it might need a lot of reps to get it dialed in.

@leevilindi
@leevilindi 3 года назад
Hi, thanks! It's hard to say how far you could be able to throw, but I definitely recommend trying it out. Javelin is a technical event, so it requires thousands of reps to make it fly well. @leevilindi
@leevilindi 3 года назад
For javelin throwing itself the best drills are partials; standing throw, throw from the penultimate step and throw from crossovers. The same can be done with weihgted balls, too, and I'd recommend to progressively overload to heavier implements (I have done standing throws with 5 kg shot eventually). Also practicing the approach and the different phases of it with or without the javelin are helpful. Naturally the most important exercise is the full performance, javelin throw with full-speed approach. Just make sure that your body is ready (a lot of partials and approach drills already done) for full-speed throws when you start doing them more regularly.

I totally agree with the above re power and weight training. I’m 54 and have always trained weights throughout my life. Really important to maintain muscle mass as you get older.
