Also Let the poney motor run the main motor for a while and then when it's cranking good and is warm then turn the fuel shutoff on and it should start but like the other comment I think the Pony motor needs a tune up as Even when it's running empty doesn't sound like it's running full speed but I don't remember I used to play with a few that we had when I was growing up
Pony desperately needs a tune up. I put new points on this past spring. This coming spring I wanna clean the plugs and possibly get the carb serviced. Something just isn’t quite right with it yet.
Never really had anything to do with a John Deere with a Pony motor start, but anytime I've had anything to do with the caterpillars with a pony motor they seem to be a bit of a problem, everybody looks after the big engine but they don't worry about the little one, we had Internationals that started on gas and switched over to diesel whole lot less trouble, however that old 70 is a nice looking tractor even though I'm not a John Deere two cylinder fan I hated them, that was kind of fun to watch and I'd be happy to have that tractor in my Machine Shed!
This is the proper starting procedure for a pony start Deere. Start Pony, allow Pony to run for a period of mins to warm up and to warm up big Diesel. Pull decompression lever and allow big motor to turn for a while circulating oil and building oil pressure. Then allow it to have compression but no fuel for a while. This will build temperature in the cylinder without the injectors spraying fuel in a cold cylinder washing it and cooling it off. Once it's had a couple mins of compression without fuel add the bare minimum amount of fuel and she will start every single time. The reason it's was so hard to start was he didn't even come close to following this procedure and the pony needs a tune up.
I had a guy tell me he loved his jd tractors but his internationals gas start diesel tractors would start better in the extreme cold. Enjoyed the video and glad it started.
That's because IH tractors used the same cylinders for gas starting mode as well as diesel operation. Once you had it running on gas and got a bit of heat built up in the head, then it would pick right up when it was switched to diesel operation
I actually have the manual. What they don’t tell ya is it’s never gonna start the same every time. There were days colder than this where it would pop right off. And others when I’d go through two tanks of gas before the diesel would be warm enough to pop.
If it was the points it wouldn't run at all. My JD A sits about a 100 feet from where he is in this video. My points are dirty and it absolutely will not start.
I put new points in this past spring, plus I clean them before installing. The big issue I have s the ethanol content in the gasoline. Plus whoever rebuilt the carb, didn’t have it set right either.
