These commercials aired in 1978 and 1979
1. Westminster Motors (These aired on WJZ on April 29th, 1978)
2. Orbit Gum
3. Tic Tac (Mouth whack?)
4. The Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens: The Old Country (The narrator here is Paul Frees. Believe it or not, this ad is for a roller coaster, and it was the first coaster in the world to feature two interlocking loops. As of 2022 it is the only remaining roller coaster to have this feature. The park was later renamed to Busch Gardens Williamsburg)
5. TV Spot for "Warlords Of Atlantis"
6. Carpet Fair (Shag carpet sale, must be the 70's)
7. 9-Lives Cat Food (With Morris The Cat)
8. Kings Dominion (An amusement park in Virginia)
9. Juvenile Services Administration PSA
10. Fox Chevrolet (Commercials starting here aired on WJZ in November of 1978)
11. Don Hutchinson for Baltimore County Executive (He won)
12. Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips (This was a fast food chain, which hit its peak in popularity in the late 70's and had over 800 stores around this time. As of 2022, only one location remains in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio)
13. Orbit Gum
14. Carpet Fair
15. Promo for "People Are Talking" (With Oprah Winfrey, who worked at WJZ from 1976-1983)
16. Action Ford
17. WJZ 13 Station ID (Hard Shell Crabs and Science Labs!)
18. Promo for "Cancer In Kids" on WJZ 13 Eyewitness News (With Oprah Winfrey)
19. Enoch Pratt Free Library PSA
20. General Electric Brew Starter (Commercials starting here aired on NBC on April 26th, 1979. My parents owned a slightly larger GE coffee maker that looked a lot like this until probably the mid 90's)
21. General Electric Food Processor
22. Listerine
23. Promo for "Supertrain"
24. General Electric Go Dryer
25. Muriel Cigars (With Susan Anton. Despite a ban on TV cigarette advertising enacted in 1970, Cigarillos could still be advertised on TV until the early 80's)
26. Promo for "Diff'rent Strokes", "Hello Larry", "The Rockford Files" and "The Duke"
27. YWCA PSA
28. Promo for "Swashbuckler"
29. WNBC NewsCenter4 Promo
30. La Yogurt
31. Jacobsen Super Bagger Lawnmower (Possibly the first commercial for a lawnmower that I've posted?)
32. Konica C35 AF Autofocus Camera
33. WNBC Bumper
34. WNBC NewsCenter4 (Just a few minutes of this were recorded, I've included this as a bonus)
35. WABC News (The channel briefly changes to this before the recording cuts off)

Oh yeah; I remember when Listerine came in glass bottles encased in those corrugated tubes. Still were, as late as the 90s, if not later.

Two things you'd never think you'd hear together in the same commercial - Soft Shell Crabs & Science Labs! You had another commercial for a Troy-Bilt Mulching Mower over on 90s Commercials Vol. 361! On Nickelodeon! That was on a lot around that time! Nice clips from WNBC (& WABC!) Chuck Scarborough has been doing the news on channel 4 since 1974!!!

Ohh, the Loch Ness Monster was such a big deal when it opened! Driving up to the park and seeing people flipping and screaming by either really excited you or terrified you. Definitely our favorite of the two parks. Kings Dominion, by contrast, wasn't as much fun for small kids until Paramount bought into it years later. They did get Smurf Mountain in the '80s, though.

Loch Ness Monster still going strong 44 years later. The park actually sold a car from it last year on Ebay for charity and even gave team members a chance to buy a couple of cars from it.

9 Lives Cat Food- Every time I hear Morris the Cat's thoughts in commercials like these, I'm willing to bet that those are the exact same thoughts that run through the heads of cats in real life. Morris is so charming, that, I think he should've had his own TV show.
@jims3251
@jims3251 2 года назад
Nowadays (or maybe a decade or two ago), he undoubtedly would have. Remember 'Cavemen?' Ugh. Morris woulda been better, though, I think.

Tic Tac-mouth wack..a good way to do an impression of the Seinfeld theme Warlords Of Atlantis-loved that film, good stop motion fx Supertrain-a gritty remake of this would be interesting..Snowpiercer meets The Love Boat The Duke-there must've been a better way to tear that off the wall

"Hello Larry" was a spin-off from "Diff'rent Strokes," I've learned while watching the former show's earliest seasons recently. There were a few episodes that devoted a lot of time to that cast.

0:30 and 5:40--I believe Orbit gum went away for a while and then came back. Kind of surprising that these commercials are all spoken and lack the catchy jingles characteristic of most Wrigley's commercials of this era. 3:00--I wonder if this is the original Morris? I recall that he died in 1978 or 1979, and Morris has been played by several other cats since then. 6:42 and 8:40--Wow; early Oprah Winfrey! I didn't realize she was a TV personality that far back since her syndicated talk show debuted in 1986. Per Wikipedia, she was a local news anchor in Baltimore in the late 70's. 9:35--Back when Listerine came in glass bottles, and only came in its original "mediciney" flavor. (I prefer the minty flavors, myself.) 12:55--Someone clarified that this wasn't the first lawnmower commercial posted on this channel, but it's surprising that there have been so few in well over 1,000 volumes from all 3 decades.

Orbit was apparently pulled from shelves after suspicions that Xylitol, the natural sweetener it used, might be a carcinogen. While it is extremely poisonous to dogs, it's been proven to be safe for human consumption and Orbit returned in 2001.

I believe the "voice" of Morris was the same man who voiced the cartoon character He-man, from the Masters of the Universe.

I was wondering if "Warlords of Atlantis" could be seen on RU-vid. Well, I could find movie trailers and some clips. I also looked into Amazon for DVD releases. There are PAL Region 2 releases but the NTSC version is out-of-print and expensive to get. Perhaps a Blu-ray release will come soon???

This is the DC/Baltimore Corridor so a literal clown about may not even be the strangest thing you even see that day.

Been to Kings Dominion, but I haven't been to Busch Gardens Williamsburg (formally Old Country) yet. I need to go there in my quest to have ridden over 100 different roller coasters!

You definitely need to get to Busch Gardens Williamsburg. The shows are good and right now there are 8 coasters at the park including Loch Ness Monster which will be celebrating 45 years next year. The newest coaster is Pantheon and is amazing. Of course you have Apollo's Chariot which is infamous for the incident that happened on it's first day.

1978 was a horrible era for American cars, some of the ugliest ever made.
@80sCommercialVault

It really took the second big oil crisis of 79/80 for American automakers to move away from the "boat" design of the 70's and move towards fuel efficiency. And that was spurned mainly by Americans moving away from domestics and starting to buy imports/captive imports instead.

@@80sCommercialVault I vividly remember sitting in the gas lines. My dad loved the boats - in 1972 or 73, he bought a four door Chevy Caprice. I've seen aircraft carriers that were smaller than that car!
