Holy cow! It's astonishing how much more planning, care, and effort went into this than my conception. I am honoured to say that I sleep next do these speakers every night on that lovely piece of yellow foam featured in the video.

WOW.... Some shameful hate comments here. You wont get that from me here. In fact, I am impressed! You put thought into this project and built speakers that look great but unfortunately RU-vid wont be able to reproduce how good they actually sound. I have built speaker enclosures in my past and some of them turned out ok and some turned out AMAZING! Who cares what you play through them??? If you like the music choice that you played through the speakers and it sounds AMAZING? (considering mucic choice and quality of sound is in the ear of the beholder) Then who are we to judge?! Keep up your great work!

Great design, almost there, need more work on the finishing. You should not just lacquer it like that. Trim all the access, get some body filler, sand it smooth, then spray paint it. Lacquer gloss finishing need some amount of woodwork skill and a lot of times to do it.

I have so many questions. 1) How long did it take you - from building a spec to completion? 2) How much did the project cost you, all in? 3) How do you crossover the speakers - an external crossover, or did you buy a built in crossover or made one from scratch? 4) How do they sound? 5) If you had to do this all over again, what would you have done differently? Overall, I can only imagine how great it feels to make your own speakers. How much fun that is, I mean. I wish I was as good with all the tools. BTW, did you have them already or did you have to rent/buy them?

I say piss off to to people who don't get it. Yeah you're suppose to build a golden rule box and do this and that, but where's the fun in building a speaker that thousands of people have already done before. I agree with you that mdf sucks. Any good pro audio cabinet is birch ply. Mdf is porous like a crap, and you could drill a hundred holes in it and it wouldn't change the sound quality. As far as woodworking skills and such, practice and practice more, but safely. Table saws love careless fingers. And use a router instead of a rotozip for driver holes, so you could flush mount for a better seal of the drivers. Don't use screws, use glue and shoot brads for quick assembly. The best suggestion of any cabinet design, no matter what the shape, or material, or thickness, is bracing from front to rear, and side to fight internal air pressure flex. The triangle design is a great alternative, but still need bracing to fight wall flexing. Have fun man, It's not like your building a church. It's a box with speakers in it.

Very nice!... I would have loved to see how you made the crossovers for these!... Are you using passive x-overs, or an active electronic one and separate amps for all the drivers?... If you used passive x-overs, then did you make the coils yourself ,and what type of capacitors did you use, and on the other hand, if you did use an *electronic* x-over and separate amps, then which x-over model did you use?... Also, what kind/brand/model of tweeter is that? I like how you have it suspended like that; that set-up ends up producing better imaging than if you had it mounted to a baffle, because of the sound diffraction from the baffle itself... Nice design, looks pretty high-end... More details *please*, about above questions!
@sugastuff8838
@sugastuff8838 7 лет назад
its an active crossover. the crossover is a dbx 234 i think. the tweeter is an Aurum Cantus AST2560 Aero Striction Tweeter. All the drivers are suspended from the base to isolate vibrations. i honestly couldn't think of a way of mounting the tweeter, but this method gave the best imaging as you said and made it easier for dipole sound pattern.

I think they came out nice so are they three-way or two way or single can you describe the wattage handling and what you're driving them with I like those cables pretty cool
@sugastuff8838
@sugastuff8838 7 лет назад
terry tate the low end is driven by a 500 watt per channel plate amplifier, the miss are driven by a 300 watt per channel plate amplifier and so are the highs. There are 2 channels (one for each speaker) which puts total power handling at 2200 watts. Of course those stats are based on the manufacturer data so it's safe to presume that the actual output is less. Also the highs never draw nearly that much power. I have the boards being powered off of a 1500 watt rectifier board and that thing hardly struggles so it's safe to assume that the power never gets close to that. Still though every tier of each tower has a sensitivity of 96 db per watt so these things really give the walls a run for their money. The whole amp system is made from premade boards except for the transformer which I found to be half the price to make myself.

You had some good ideas but also some rookie errors. The workmanship is on the level of a pre-pilot study. If you plan to increase the surface quality a little bit you should rework with fine sand paper and clear varnish 1 or 2 times. Better use a buzz-saw instead of a "Schnellficker" (com. german for jig-saw). I think it would sound better if the high-range speaker is mounted between base and midragne. anyhow the surface ratio of the mid-rage to the high range speakers i estimate at 7 : 1. Better stack 4 high range speakers left or right of the mid-range and don't forget to adjust the cross-over. The wooden staffs under the mid-range box supose me that you planed to let them "fly" held by the steel cables. You shuold use some elastic material instead of wood to seperate or eleminate vibrations.
@sugastuff8838

@sugastuff8838

Torkel Werge I'm not really sure if the cables were worth it. I suspect the effect on sound would be negligible. The tweeter up top however is very cool. It males the room sound like a big theater or hall. If you close your eyes you can get a sense for the size of the speakers. The best way to describe the sound is big and open.

I have plenty of suggestions for you. If you can take constructive criticism, here goes: Firstly, I like the fact that you are building, not buying. And you have to start somewhere, so well done with the correct mental attitude. Content wise, the speakers look like steam-punk at best. There are many mistakes and errors, bud. You don't know how to cut, glue, clamp or join properly. And your table saw technique will soon see you parting ways with a finger or two. Probably the second worst use of a table saw I have ever seen. At least you seem to be wearing safety glasses, so that's a plus. Regarding choice of materials, rather use MDF or particle board for cabinet construction. Plywood is not a great material for speaker boxes, because it often has voids between layers, and it flexes too much. These two issues can lead to resonant panels. Any joint that is not structurally sound will also resonate. As a beginner, you should focus on simple box designs that are within your skill set and your tool set. Use butt joints with interior battens that will both strengthen and seal your box. Finish exteriors with bondo rubbed down properly to conceal lines, and matt grey, or black paint to finish. Or a textured paint like fleckstone or truck bin liner instead of the bondo and matt paint. Use a router to ad half round profiles to edges. Regarding the mid-range enclosure. From your video, it appears that your mid drivers are sealed at the back. So no enclosure needed. Regarding the steel framework: Totally unnecessary, and badly welded. Why bother with that crap of suspending mids and a tweeter? Absolute nonsense, mate. If there is a reason behind it that anyone could hear, all speakers would be made that way. Forget esoteric, audiofool nonsense. Concentrate on a well made box (use a driver with known T/S parameters) , with ONE full range driver, and ONE tweeter. 12 or 24 dB/octave active filter, decent quality amp modules. You will be amazed at how good it will sound. If you want me to give feedback on your video, let me know.
@sugastuff8838
@sugastuff8838 7 лет назад
I sincerely appreciate the criticism. You are absolutely correct, I do not know what i am doing. This was my first real woodworking experience. I completely disagree with sticking to simple projects however, I feel that attempting projects totally outside of my skill set is the best way to learn faster. MDF is definitely easier to work with. However i have also read on multiple sources that MDF makes the sound dull and removes musicality. I have read that dense plywoods sound the best as box materials. Unfortunately dense plywoods were out of my price range so i went with spruce. The reason all speaker are not made that way is because its a pain in the ass to do and expensive. However if you look at many expensive speakers they have the lows mids and highs on separate baffles. Im not sure if it makes a difference but i thought it would look cool and increased the scope of the project. Focusing on designs in my tool set is some great advice hah. The angles were so inaccurate i spent too many hours sanding. The mids werent close backed, however i did design the box to be way to big (i designed the mid box like a woofer box) because of lack of experience. Any woodworking feedback i would appreciate however i will continue to attempt difficult projects.

As someone who is also in the DIY speaker hobby, I can say you have much to learn. We all have to start somewhere, and you certainly don't seem afraid to jump right in and get your hands dirty, so kudos to you for that. Those monsters in that tiny room? Those things are begging for a massive room with done up acoustics. Big woofers in a small room = heavy over exaggerated bass.

socksumi If I opened up the door to the hallway, the room sort of acted as a second order bass reflex cabinet with really weird resonances.

+Selendrake74 I'd say it about half n half. It's really good (Not quite audiophile) but the sound quality stays the same up to an unreasonable volume

Fuskers I have it set up so that you can only listen to JB. It was a bit of a design flaw (sometimes I feel like listening to fetty wapp), so I'll have to change it on the next system.

Are you Peter Griffin? Good idea, but the build quality was horrific, coming from a person that has actually built a couple dozen systems and not some internet hero. I hope you learn from this and go on to make some better builds in the future though, because it's a good hobby and ambition is a useful tool, but like all tools it must be implemented properly. Just saying. lol
@sugastuff8838

+hahasimpsons this was my first build. Why does everyone expect perfect build quality?
@hahasimpsons
@hahasimpsons 6 лет назад
DiyItYourselfYourself reading between the lines i implied that it was good effort and your next build should present much better results. You incorporated many interesting design elements which were unique. Live and learn. Don't just repeat and expect differing results.

You should do a video describing why you built it like you did, for example why you used resonant materials to build the suspension system and what effect you intended for them to have. Also which Behringer amp and processor you used and how you like them. I have a a Yamaha RX v667 feeding a Behringer Ultra DI pro and Feedback destroyer pro, going to 4 Altec Lansing 9444A and 1 Behringer ep4000 amps, but would like to get 5 of the iNuke 3000 dsp's and a 1200 for the subs. Fun stuff to play with.
