In this video I take a road trip to Chicago for a friends wedding! The twist is I can only use the built-in navigation! Will I make it? You'll have to watch to find out! Feel free to grab some popcorn or break it up into a few sessions! I didn't want to break this video up since it is all about the built-in navigation of the VW ID.4! Enjoy!

if half the electrify america charging stations work it will be a fun road trip car. i just did one from phoenix to los angeles when there is only 1 EA in the middle of the desert and only 1 station works its a nightmare because there is no other station available for 150+ miles

The level of NAV stress tied to EA is exhausting. The fluctuations in stops etc…BUT when its good its good.. 😊

I have used the built-in nav a few times. But since I like the Google maps for the view better. I plan it on A Better Route Planner then export it to the Google maps. Great video keep up the good work.🎉

Fantastic. The long awaited for ID.4 native NAV road trip. I have to say that I am actually pretty impressed with the way the native NAV handled the trip. Your comments regarding the quirks are so on point for all of VAG software. Why can VAG not have its own EA chargers show up reliably on route planning. Maybe it is based on charging location telemetry, but I doubt it. Great review. Thank you for going into the detail that you did. This looks similar to Audi's which also does take route changes in elevation into account as well as obviously your dynamic SOC. I like how ID.4 handled the target destination remaining SOC options as well as the charging location SOC requirements. Audi does a bad job of that. I also like the ID.4's target SOC for charging locations whereas Audi give the driver a really weird "Time to charge" figure which is useless if the charger is not operating nominally. Nice review.

I use the builtin navi all of the time these days. I had used ABRP a bit, but I always had trouble getting the dongle to sync with the phone. I guess what I like is that the directions are always really clear - getting around a place that you are not familiar with is no problem at all. With the old car software, entering a destination was the painful part. But with the new software, one can use the phone app to essentially google for an address and then send it to the car, and this eliminated a lot of the pain of using the builtin navi. The old car software would sometimes pick charging stops at a L2, which was even more absurd than a 20kW DC charger, but the new car software doesn't seem to do this any more.

Great review. Just honest and not alike all those other RU-vidrs actually making product advertisements :) Regards from Germany.

Thanks for watching! We try to keep it real! The ID.4 is not perfect, but we do love it. Every car has issues!

Thanks for sharing. I have yet to take any real road trips in our ID.4, though I am ready. And, I do occasionally use the built-in navigation to take trips around town.

With my Bolt I have to go aftermarket route planning, but neat to see how a native nav works in different brands and to see them in actoin. Cool little trip.

Cool vid. I like watching road trips like this. BTW, where was that ginormous tunnel? Can't think of any in PA, OH, or IN.

Thanks for watching! The tunnel is on the PA turnpike going towards Ohio. I don’t remember exactly where unfortunately!

It looks like the built in navigation didn’t override the 80% limit at EA University Park Mall in South Bend, IN Station ID 100216 on charger 03 @ 35:10, but it did go to 84% earlier.

The software v. 3.5 route and charge planning test by batterylife and a german speaking youtuber, was uplifting to watch. No personal experience yet with road trips in an ID car but will get it soon.

I hope you are still getting your free EA charging. From a fuel standpoint this is a "I told you so", from the naysayers as it cost you $76 in charging. Thant would buy you ~19 or 20 gallons of gas giving you ~ 35 mpg which an ICE car could reasonably do and only have to stop once for 5 minutes along the way. Just got a new ID4 AWD ProS and looking to try similar road trips while we have free EA charging. Keep up the good work on the ID4 videos!

I love these videos as I am keen on taking my Audi Q4 on a roadtrip. What I don’t get is why so many people always default to Google, Apple Maps with ABRP and PlugShare. Not having any personal experience, I am curious to know why so many people don’t use built in nav systems when they clearly work. Otherwise, why would automakers include them in their EVs. They’re not required by law. There is no advantage for an automaker to include a crappy nav system in their vehicles. Though, I guess I must admit having watched the videos about the Ioniq 5 nav which I must say was crappy. Any way, just curious to know more from others more experienced with EV road tripping.
@theaverageev
@theaverageev Год назад
Thanks for watching! The built in planners are all over the place as far as quality is concerned. The reason I prefer ABRP is because it includes weather, elevation, and traffic in its calculations. It allows me to optimize travel more and minimize charge time. I am optimistic that built in navigation will get better over time. Rivian just bought ABRP which I find to be interesting. Hopefully they will make some improvements. At the end of the the day I think the ID.4 nav is not too shabby and can easily allow owners to get where they want with little issue! You’ll have to let us know how your Q4 road trip goes when you take it! Speaking of Q4 e-tron, how do you like it? What’s the fastest charge rate you’ve received? I’d love to know!

29 minutes to get a decent charge? One can fill up their gas tank in about five minutes.

What about bathroom and eating breaks? I would prefer extra time out of the car during trips and not having to worry about oil changes and get harassed about those oil changes from the dealer. I just got my id4 yesterday and it is a much nicer drive than the ICE RAV4 I just turned in and my insurance and monthly lease payment is lower.

You were able to charge at all stops . Why do you continue to harp on the Ea network. You can trade it for a Mach e or model 3 and use superchargers . Even after talking about blue heron you got a good charge . You new some units had problems ahead of time. No need to show every unit. We already have 1 Kyle Connor and that is too much. You forget all the places you have traveled on free Ea charging. Complaining does no good. Switch if it is too much to handle.
@theaverageev
@theaverageev Год назад
Thanks for sharing your opinion! While I was fortunate to get a good charge from the only fully functioning charger, it doesn’t make it a good charge stop. It was a bad charge stop and if there was one other person there before me it would have been a bad stop. All chargers should be working at 100% capacity, the majority of the time. Just checked the EA app and the two 350s are now completely down. I stopped there almost a month ago. Companies need to be held accountable. Sorry if you don’t agree.

As an owner of both an ID4 and an M3P, I agree that we need to keep beating the drum on improving public charging, especially EA. I wouldn’t dream of taking my ID4 on the 5K mile road trip I have planned for this summer, but I don’t have a single worry about doing that trip in the Tesla. If VW would adopt NACS for the US market, I might keep the ID4 long term! They’ll eventually have to, but I’m sure they’ll drag their feet.

Doesn t make sense to move from a SUV (ID 4) to a sedan ( Model 3). If you want space, practical EV you don t downgrade to smaller cars right ?
