STORY
Join us on a captivating journey as we step inside the walls of a 700-year-old abandoned castle nestled in the heart of the French countryside.
Constructed in the 13th century under the watchful eye of the Lord of the District, this castle has a rich history of serving as a noble residence for most of its existence. For over 7 centuries, it was the epicenter of control for this region of France.
The castle boasts a remarkable medieval architectural style, featuring fortified walls and three iconic towers, two at the rear, and a front tower that showcases a grand staircase. Throughout the ages, this castle passed through the hands of various noble families and witnessed numerous conquests.
The castle's final owners, Oliver, a renowned composer, and his wife Claire, a talented dancer, were not bestowed with noble titles, but they were equally influential in their respective fields. Their shared love for the fine arts transformed the castle into a true masterpiece, with each room reflecting their passions in life.
After Claire's time, the castle became a place untouched by human presence, slowly succumbing to the ravages of time. Yet, even in its state of decay, the castle emanates a haunting beauty and an aura of enigmatic allure.
Our journey of discovery takes us into the heart of this forgotten relic of a bygone era, a place where history whispers through crumbling corridors and echoing chambers. Come, join us, and uncover the mysteries hidden within the silent walls of this ancient French castle.

what a channel ❤ whatever, All this inspiration is answering your mind, No matter how rich or poor, strong or weak you are in the end mother nature wins and trees and plants grow all around its a humility reminder for people that they're replaceable 👌 Your pride will not last forever, Therefore, try to do good, or at least not do e,vil, Because you are as fleeting as these There must be a,nother life, but logically there is a,nother life, No matter what side you’re on 👌 Be c,areful, Coz this is the most important thing a person can get out of watching these charming scenes

This is absolutely fascinating. Olivier Messiaen was one of the great composers of the 20th century. His Turangalîla-Symphonie, a favourite of mine, is considered an innovative masterpiece. I first heard his work as a teenager, when I found a recording of his "Quatuor pour la fin du temps" in a record shop where I live in Canada. That work was composed when Messiaen was a prisoner of war in the German Stalag VIII-A. Messiaen was a pioneer of electronic music, and composed for the first practical electronic instrument, the Ondes Martenot. Much of his inspiration was drawn from birdsong, and his love of nature. The chateau belonged to the family of his first wife, Claire Delbos. Claire was herself a fine composer, and a highly regarded concert violinist. Unfortunately, she developed serious brain damage from a botched operation, suffered from total amnesia, and ultimately died in a mental institution. In your video, there is a large photograph of her on the wall, taken in happier times. Messiaen's orchestral suite "L'Ascension" was composed in the chateau, and a photograph exist showing Claire playing the violin in front of the chateau while Olivier sits on a folding chair and reads. I suspect the photo of the young boy, whose features strongly resemble Olivier's, is of their son Pascal. Notice that there are several tape recorders to be seen, and many reels of recording tape. These machines were still expensive at that time, and it was unusual to own more than one. This is because of Messiaen's fascination with bird songs. He collected recordings of bird songs everywhere he travelled, and the tapes you see in this video were probably some of these.

You guys were speaking about the rounded cabinets that fit in the corners. The reason you see this so much is because people believed that the devil could hide in the corners so they didn’t like rooms with 45 degree angles. If the room had to be built with corners, they would put things in the corners so evil couldn’t hide there.

Im beginning to believe not that families don’t cherish their history, but imagine the costs of maintaining these buildings, imagine the differences in income that a modern person has to have to live in a castle compared to their ancestors.. Perhaps it would have been better to sell to a company that could turn it into a museum? Bed and Breakfast? I’d definitely pay to be able to see and explore a place like this!

It’s a particularly lovely castle. I love the shape, the towers, the stonework, the massive fireplace. Incredible treasures everywhere. You know, people will spend multi millions for a new built house in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. If l had that kind of money, I’d buy an ancient home or castle. One of the big problems is that you have to pay for repairs and taxes. What a dream to fix up and live in a medieval castle such as this beauty! Thank you gentleman.

Those crystal pieces that look like weights are silverware rests, I believe. Instead of putting dirty silverware on the edge of the plate or on the tablecloth, you rest them on the crystal so you can use them for the rest of the meal.

It hurts to not see the art and the rest of that book. That'd be the only reason I'd do this, to find hints to the real history. When it's a map book,it really hurts, lol I'm grateful to see these videos though!

The glass weights are Crystal knife rests for on the dinner table so you don't get the linens dirty when you lay your knife down while eating! It's cool to see a whole set!

Thank you Lesley and Danny for taking us along with you to this lovely, ancient castle. It was in amazingly good condition, especially considering its age. The artifacts were extraordinary. Thank you for a wonderful explore. I especially enjoyed the violin music in the background. It was very appropriate considering the old, broken violin that you found. Wonderful views from the windows as well as the close-ups of the exterior, showing building details. Keep up the good work guys!!

Great work finding another amazing place to explore and inviting us to come along with you. You go to places that I will never get to go. I’m not able to drive anymore due to a progressive brain disease that has really limited my abilities to walk , to do even simple things that once were so easy for me to do. My memory seems to be getting worse especially after my last fall about 3 weeks ago when I fell backwards hitting my head on the corner of the cabinet I fell on. I’m on 2 blood thinners to try and keep me from having more strokes so I was bleeding so bad that I soaked my hair and gown in blood. When the ambulance EMTs rolled me in the nurse put me in a room right away. The fastest I’ve ever been seen in the ER! My neurologist has warned me that I have too many lesions in my brain to count and I was afraid I was going to die. They tell me to be careful and I let them know I’m not trying to fall but I get so dizzy when I turn around that I can’t always catch myself so I’m spending more time in the wheelchair. I get so bored but it really helps me to watch episodes of you and Danny exploring these places that I’d love to go to but can’t. Thank you for making it fun and entertaining. I love it when Lesley dresses up in the period attire and tells the history of each place and gives us an idea of what it was like living in that time frame. I’m living day to day and thanking God for each new day that I wake up again. I just turned 67 and used to be so active. I had to retire early and I’d much rather be healthy and still working. I’m learning to do what I can do and accept help with the things that used to be so easy for me to do. Sorry to be so long with my note but I wanted you both to see how important it is for you to keep exploring these beautiful places all over the world. I appreciate your work so much! Thank you❣️

I again lose touch with the live feed. 😮 Anyhow this is in amazing undamaged condition (looking at the start of visit). The huge trees closing in saying it sat close to im guessing 20 years since property caretaker was on site. The coal on the floor in the wine room was to be used in the small kitchen for the cook stove. The wood in the first room was only to begin the fire then the Coal was placed on top and the heat continues through the entire day allowing both to cook and keep the basement warm. The large red french book was titled (my french understanding) "The Book of Esther" its an excerpt from the Holy Bible old testament. She was a Queen in the middle East, and the holiday of Purim is in memory of her time and actions. The "round discs" were not "tapes" but actually 8mm Film. Very rare method of making your own family movie. Someone has removed the projector and screen otherwise you can play them and see the people as they walked around in life. The black plastic movie camera seen after was "16mm" movie, and i believe is still somewhat available today but expensive. It was a kind of cassette inside if I remember. I used to have one when I was young but gave it away because I couldn't afford the film cartridges. The flash belonged to a 35mm photography camera which also has been removed and would date to 1964 65 as I have two just like it, one from Germany and the other from Japan. The player seen on the desk is actually a voice tape recorder and used back in the day for sending "Live letters"; the sender would tell their story and introduce the children and guests and possibly sing and tell jokes. Send in the post to the relative to listen again and again and pretend they're together.

The tape recorder is an old, " reel-to-reel" recorder. The secret door, toilet is called a garde-robe, quite common in old castles. Great video, as usual. Thanks,

This is "Benoît castle", which is at Neussargues-Moissac, in the "Cantal" department. The composer's name is Olivier Messiaen.

Messiaen never owned this château. It was the country house of the Delbos family, Claire's father Victor Delbos was an eminent professor at the Sorbonne. Messiaen spent the summer of 1933 there working on some of his early works. Claire was a violinist not a dancer. There is some confusion in the narrative of the film, but much was interesting and revealing.

I got to meet Olivier Messiaen when he came to my conservatory in the late 70s to give composition seminars. He was a unique man, he could speak fluent English but refused and spoke only French. His wife translated for him.
