700r4 to TH350 Swap not as easy as you think! 

I have an 89 c1500 extended cab and did this swap. Had to get the 9" tail and modify my crossmember for the mount to have something to hold. The 2 piece driveshaft saved me from having to get a custom driveshaft. My homemade crossmember mount makes the pan leak easy but aside from that everything has held up fine.

I just swapped out my 700R4 for a TH350 in my 1985 K1500 Suburban. The guy who rebuilt the TH350 added an adapter to it (between the trans and T/C) to make it the same length as the 700R4, so I was able to re-use both driveshafts. Had to add a vacuum line. The crossmember lined up OK. Doesn’t downshift automatically when you accelerate hard because I don’t have a kick-down cable. Just didn’t feel like getting that 700R4 rebuilt again.

You just need to find the right length driveshaft they make a thing called a baster joint so you can mate an odd size yoke to a different size driveshaft if u cant find the right length get a longer one and have it cut down by a machine shop so its balanced right there u go wham bam👌

What about a 83 caprice. Would i still need a 9 inch tail for that ? I just bought a tail shaft adapter for the th350

I bought a kit that makes the tail shaft longer and that included a spacer at a longer output shaft

Th350 have a 6 inches tail and a 9 inch tail. The 9 inch is only about 1/8th difference total length compared to the 700r4. You need the 9 inch tail. Direct replacement for 700r4

That tail housing thats was used is from a 3rd gen F-body Firebird-Camaro

How did you adjust the linkage I'm having problems trying adjust mine I did the same swap too

I have done many times this swap. The output shaft is same spline for both th350 and 700R4 transmissions at 27 spline and TH350 truck transmission 9" tail shaft is longer also then TH350 car 6" shaft. You must have the 9" truck TH350 output shaft and tail housing to direct swap this into place of 700R4 or 4L60/4L60E.

Did you have to change the flex plate, torque converter? Where is the vacuum hooked up?

I’d like to swap out my trans some day for a 700r4 but it’s a 4x4 so I’d have to deal with 2 drive shafts

You need a long tail 350 it's a 1/8" difference

You need a long tail TH350. These particular transmissions came stock on Station wagons not sure what model and year but very common with the classic wagons.

Is this truck a single or extra cab?

so use a 9 inch 350 from 73 through 86 pickups

To much of the tail shaft is stick out. When you put the drive shaft all the way into the tranny it should only be out 1" after it's seaded in when in put it in to the rear end

1977 drive shaft works.

different tail housing or a shorter drive shaft that yoke is way to long that will give you a bad vibration

I have never seen a th350 with electronic speed autometer... be interesting to see if there is one.. Maybe a th400 in a 88 to 90 1 ton with th400 might have one.

Should've used a th400 transmission they can hold up alot better. The th350 transmissions are garbage
