I got my hands on a 70-years old Leica Summarex 8.5cm f/1.5 and shot the lens on my Leica SL2. In this video I explain the lens which is a legacy screw mount lens that fits to M-mount only with an adapter. I also show lots of sample images of my model Stephanie. Turns out that this lens has a very special character and is a dream for any portrait shooter.

Absolutely stunning lens, beautiful engineering. The dreamy look is wonderful and I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but it reminds me of my Voigtlander 75mm f1.5 which is similarly dreamy at F1.5, but very clean and sharp the moment you stop down. Sadly my budget won’t stretch to such exotic wonders, so it’s great you share your insights.

Great find Matt, Being able to use it seamlessly on your SL2 makes this lens very useful, rather than just being a wonderful collectable Congratulations and hope it brings you much enjoyment, kindness regards, Ron

Thanks, indeed for portraits it is desirable to have a bit of a softer look, makes faces more beautiful.

Thank you Math for this very interesting video. I hope you will regularly make this kind of video about old quality lenses! Concerning the most useful cameras for the use of vintage lenses, I'm hesitating between a Leica SL2-S (Microlens sensor designed for use with manual lenses) and the Nikon Zf (focusing aid for manual lenses for Leica M => in combination with the TT Artisan M-Z 6-bit adapter). It would be great if you could do a comparison of these two cameras for use with old lenses. You work with both camera brands. I'm sure you're the right guy for this kind of comparison!!! Thanks in advance

Thanks Erick, I will consider. I think both cameras do well with Leica vintage lenses. The Nikon Zf by design of course looks like a vintage camera too besides being fully packed with technology and features. My review of the Zf is in the making :)

So happy you reviewed this lens. Very unique and a beautiful copy. Great images and model. How would this balance on an M camera?

Many thanks, glad you liked the video. The lens balances well on my Leica M11-P, kind of the same way as other more heavy Leica-M tele lenses or Noctilux lenses.

That’s a beautiful looking lens! And heavy 🤯 the photos it takes are indeed very dreamy. Gives away that it’s a vintage lens. How much does a good one sell for nowadays?

Thanks! As said in the video, this lens I own now has an exceptional condition, no signs of use. Then you pay likely USD 4000+ for such a lens. I got it cheaper from my friend. He is a retired Leica photographer and was kind of shrinking his collection :)

Fascinating video! Great old lens. Though it wasn't marketed as such, it really is a soft-focus lens, at least by today's standards. If I had the choice, I'd prefer this one to the Thambar.

Hello, would you happen to know anything about the black colored summarex 85? Thank you, and great video!!!

If it anywhere approaches the price of the 75mm Summilux then buy the Summilux. This is why the 85mm Summarex isn’t more desirable.

Nice video but that lens would perform beter on a SL2 S like with all the old(er) lenses don't go above 24MP. But it is a typical nice look . Nice girl too, beautiful face, not overdone. I like these kind of girls as models. Your beautiful neighbor as I like to call them. Very nice and thanks for sharing
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer 10 месяцев назад
Thanks RS, and yes, spot-on, the SL2-S is even better suited for these type of vintage lenses. But as you know, my Leica SL2-S is a Reporter Leica and I could not resist to combine this beautiful chrome lense with my chrome Leica SL2 :) Stephanie is indeed a good model for such lenses, very natural, not too much "posing around". And her eyes are always fascinating when catching a good portrait of her.

Could you possibly sell me the truly beautiful lens? I've been searching for it for a long time, and I would be so happy if you could sell it to me. I'll be waiting for your response. PLZ.
