#71 Amazing Result on the Kitchen Floor! | Renovating our Abandoned Stone House in Italy

We bought this stone house in Italy during the pandemic in 2020. The house was a ruin and we saved everything we could, unfortunately that meant only four stone and clay walls! The back wall, against the terrain, was close to collapse; the roof beams were eaten and basically reduced to dust; the inside separation walls were easily taken down and the whole project turned into a heavy renovation/rebuild.
Follow our journey as we turn this old stone house into a beautiful home 😊.

Nice Job, I notice that the horseshoe on your door lintel is pointing downwards, in England we traditionally hang them the other way up so your luck doesn't fall out!

Even more beautiful than I had imagined. Your use of the reclaimed tiles has instantly provided a level of character that would take a century or more to achieve. Bravissimo! Also, your solution for using the different size tiles was simple yet genius. ❤

Your commitment, research and the time you’re taking to lovingly restore your home is in direct contrast to watching new homes being figuratively thrown up in months here in the US. Beautiful reclaimed tile floors! They look wonderful against the stone walls. ♥️

You know, I wouldn't have thought that "figuratively" would be as annoying as the overuse of "literally," but you show that it can be so. No one thinks that a home is thrown up, like tossing lumber into the air and it magically assembles into a home. If we enter into a time of magic and science no longer applies to our world, then feel free to use figuratively to clarify how a home was built.

@@idontthinkso666 Unfortunately that’s my visceral reaction to the lack of architectural imagination these days and also to the v-/r-apid assemblage of multiple dwellings by developers, knowing full well craftsmanship is no longer honored, only $$$. That’s why I appreciate watching this particular channel. I look forward to hearing how they approach each step of their restoration with thoughtful consideration of their home as a living, breathing space.

@@user-uc2mk6ud2w I completely agree with you. There is a complete lack of character, intricate designs and historical inspiration/tradition with modern dwellings. In this century we are extremely advanced, we have cutting-edge tech, ai programs, and so many new ideas - building has become easier, its truly hilarious viewing older buildings and seeing that the quality and design is more complicated than the current houses that we are building. That just goes to show us as a reminder that our Western mindset truly only cares about one thing which is saving money - and as you mentioned, we need to bring back true craftsmanship. Back then, craftsmen were passionate about their job and would put in a lot of effort. Nowadays, they slap everything together and build houses out of materials that can't even withstand someone leaning on a wall.

I like that you went with the "running bond" pattern for the kitchen. As you said it blends well with the house. Great job. Can't wait to see the living room done. Oh by they way ( I know it sounds silly) but the horse shoe you have hanging above the opening into the kitchen needs to be turned with other way. The saying goes that your luck runs out with the horse shoe hanging like that. You need the bend hanging down. 😉

Your floors are looking lovely and can’t wait to see them when completed and buffed. They have a beautiful glow when they are newly sealed. You asked about our experiences with sealing terracotta floors - ours are over 20 years old and we use natural floor wax designed for terracotta. It needs re doing every 2-3 years but it’s very durable and protects the tiles from staining whilst looking good and allowing them to breathe. Like you we have an old stone built house and that was important to us too. And buy a floor buffer/ cleaner. It’ll save you a lot of hours whenever you need to do a deep clean and re wax - it gets into all the crevices on clean mode and, after applying the wax by hand, it buffs them up to a beautiful glow.

This comment is a good one about using the correct wax for terracotta. I built a house with 500 sm of terracotta from the ditta Manetti in Imprunetta and used turpentine and beeswax. My suggestion is to use multiple light coats as it will penetrate and allow you in several years to only need another light coat after cleaning. Also necessary to buy a standup electric buffer and use a medium brush to both clean and apply the wax mixture. Am glad to see you are finally using movable screeds to set your floor levels - much easier and the way my grandfather from Piemonte did in America for 50 years. All the best.@@ateliermavi

That is the traditional way: tamping the dust down and just installing the floor with a semi dry mix without a concret slab. Very nice to see it and leaves a great result. Sometimes I saw that people grout it with a mix of sand, lime, a bit of cement and red ferrite (natural iron oxide that can be red, orange or yellow) to geat the same colour than the tiles or bricks

I really like the pattern you chose for the tile. You've done an excellent job! It seems that you get more joy and satisfaction having done it yourself. That is after your back stops hurting. If you have a way to research how the tiles were sealed in the past in your area, that could give you a starting point in how to proceed. Talk to the local folks. Especially the tradesmen and old folks.

I really love the varied hues of the square tiles in the kitchen, it gives visual interest & softens the starkness of all one shade like those in the bedrooms, which is funny, because my opinion was the exact reverse before you laid them down. I was sure the different colors & sizes would be a disaster & now I like them best! Looking forward to the finished floors.

Apply linseed oile with a brush. Saturate and let dry. Up to 5 coats my be needed. After this, you apply a coat of clear wax with a cloth and buff. You must clean all of the stone very well prior to the linseed oil stage. The floor is done in two stages. Linseed first until the tiles are totally saturated, then once it is dry after multiple coats, then the clear paste wax is applied. Do not mix the oil and wax because the oil will not be able to fully saturate the tile. You can use tinted waxed safely if you prefer. A common one used is brown wax.

Just a little tip for when cutting the tiles. When you want to make a corner cut , always remember to turn your tile upside down and make the cut. This allows you to make the cuts deeper and you also cut further from your lines and gives you a more accurate results. These method also protects the giid side of your tile from scratches from the cutting disc e.t.c. Keep up the great work.

Quand vous verrez votre carrelage jointoyé et traité you will go from amazing to breathtaking.
