Welcome to the first episode of iKOMic. In this series I take on multiple Iconic KOM's. So what is an iconic KOM? An iconic KOM is when the Strava segment has at least 100k attempts, or the segment is at an iconic location.
In this episode I'll try to beat the 8 year old record on segment: Landingsbaan Soesterberg O -- W (link below). The segment is 1.1 kilometer and the current record is 60 km/h (~37 m/h). Will I get this KOM?

Ik heb even snel gekeken. KOM staat op naam van Jordi Meeus (BORA-Hansgrohe) met een vermogen van 688W voor 2 minuten, dus wie weet ;)

Does the rain help with an attempt like this? Or did it just happen to be raining when you had favorable winds

I actually don't know wether it helps in terms of aerodynamics, but it certainly did not help with my vision and traction on the track. So it just happened to be raining when the wind was favorable ;)

"3 maanden gewacht voor de perfecte omstandigheden". Er ligt verdomme 2 cm water op het wegdek! xD Volgende zomer pak ik m af hoor. 1 min waarde is 590. Moet te doen zijn als er geen mensen lopen te dwalen.

I think you actually could go faster keeping your head down. Its straight so you don't have to look more than a few meters down the line. Good Luck , and good effort!

Thanks for your comment! The majority of the top attempts on this segment have been with a tailwind, given its open nature and over 50,000 attempts. Wind plays a significant role in cycling dynamics, especially on flat terrains. Achieving 60 km/h on this segment was a personal challenge, and I'm proud of it. Every cyclist knows that elements, whether it's a tailwind, hill gradient, or other conditions, can make a difference. We all work with what we have on any given day. Cheers! 🚴‍♂️💨
