In this episode I'll try to get the world record of most Strava KOMs in one activity. To my best knowledge, the record for the most Strava KOMs snagged in one single activity was set on February 9, 2020, by Jasper Verkuijl, a fellow RU-vidr. He rode out during storm Ciara and got 40 KOMs, with around 80.000 attempts per segment on average, in one ride. Here is the link to his acitivity: www.strava.com/activities/308...
If you know any other Strava activity/ person that managed to get more KOMs in one ride with also some respectable number of attempts, please let me know in the comments so I can update my information.

KOM, a little funny considering the landscape. We need a better description for flat segments. Good effort, must have been fun flying on that tailwind

In The Netherlands we call strong winds: The Dutch mountain! So you can view this effort as one major descent 😉

Thank you for the subtitles in Polish My record is 6 Koms in one ride. Urban long, straight street, with traffic lights. I was lucky because I had good wind that day and got the green light every time. Unfortunately, my neighbor drove faster and took them all during one ride. I managed to get one back

Im happy to do the subtitels in Polish as I saw that there was some interest in my previous videos from Poland (;. Glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck on getting more of the KOMs!🥇

Best rides are with extra wind. I have done 28km in 36mins / 47km/h with fitness bike 50/34 gearing. Also i overtake a car for few seconds :D . Nice video but little risky for me. The road is narrow / wet and has other cyclists - runners and you go with 60km/h .

I am confused, did you get the KOMs against the wind ? if it's the case, massive respect to you.
@FlyingGravelMan

No, that would be impossible. ALL Dutch KOM's are set with a tailwind!

When i'm attacking local Strava KOMs during a storm that's blowing in my favor, they get banned automatically from strava because they know about the wind direction lol
@FlyingGravelMan
@FlyingGravelMan 5 месяцев назад
Your activities probably got reported by the previous KOM holder who got a notification when you caught it. Im not aware that Strava takes these type of actions by themselve. Only when someone else reports your activity. You should receive a notification that your activity is reported and then you are able to make the case that you did adhere to the KOM rules.

Wouldn't being aero not matter if the wind matches your speed on the bike? Maybe it would be worth it to get on the road bike if you can push higher watts on it.
@FlyingGravelMan
@FlyingGravelMan 5 месяцев назад
Good question and I honestly don’t know. What I know is that the base level of the wind was 45 k/h which was slightly below my speed. But I will definitely dive deeper into the studies on aerodynamics before the next storm🌪️
@daki222000
@daki222000 5 месяцев назад
just what i was thinking. as long as the wind is way faster than you, as was this day, just ride on the hoods for maximum profit.@@FlyingGravelMan
@dominikpastierovic8602
@dominikpastierovic8602 5 месяцев назад
Aero doesn't matter if you match wind speed or you are a bit above it. You can confirm this in cycling power calculator that allows adjusting all parameters. Set mechanical losses to 0%, rolling resistance to 0 and check how many watts you need to ride 15kph. Then add 20kph tailwind and check how many watts you need to ride 20kph (will be 0) and to ride 35 kph (will be the same number as 15kph without wind). Problem is you rarely get 100% tailwind, usualy it is from side as well, and that adds a lot of drag, but since aero position doesn't improve your side profile (and that sidewind is what is slowing you down) it doesn't help much.

What do you mean?
@Speedy.V
@Speedy.V 5 месяцев назад
@@FlyingGravelManhe may be saying that the KOMs are crap because some of the KOMs may have been set by a car on that same route.
@FlyingGravelMan
@FlyingGravelMan 5 месяцев назад
@@Speedy.V, thanks for explaining. I don't think that is the case. As I mentioned in the video, ALL of these KOMs are caught with a tailwind during a storm. That is just how it goes in the Netherlands. I think we also have a very high reporting rate here when someone gets a KOM by using a car.
@Speedy.V
@Speedy.V 5 месяцев назад
@@FlyingGravelMan don't take this the wrong way but who cares about a KOM on STRAVA . The only thing that really matters is if you had fun doing the challenge. I'm more impressed that you actually went out and did this challenge then if you actually got the KOMs or not. Also there are weather apps that show wind direction and projected wind direction and speed that help in achieving these types of KOM challenges.
@FlyingGravelMan
@FlyingGravelMan 5 месяцев назад
@@Speedy.V I do agree with you to some extend. But getting the KOMs is more than only being the fastest on that segment for me. It also brings a lot of traffic to my channel through Strava because lots of people actually look what the KOM is and by who it is set. Thank you for your reply anyway and hopefully you enjoyed the video ;)
@palomahombre9208
@palomahombre9208 3 месяца назад
This proves the whole point of KOM's being irrelevant. You can't compare day's due to the wheater conditions. Strava is a hoax.
@FlyingGravelMan
@FlyingGravelMan 3 месяца назад
That just adds an extra dimension to the game of KOMs. You cannot just push the most watts to get every KOM. You need to consider wind, warmth/cold and all kind of different aspects to get the KOMs. Also, in the mountains (of Mallorca for example ) where weather conditions don’t matter as much like on the flat in the Netherlands, all KOMs are already set by professionals, so the common people like myself wont stand a chance. I also think that planning all these things just makes it more fun, but that is just my humble opinion🤷‍♂️
@palomahombre9208
@palomahombre9208 3 месяца назад
@@FlyingGravelMan I agree that you must consider the conditions. Perhaps Strava can adjust times to conditions, but now it's not a even playfield. Riding next to a car with a tornado behind you might not be the example I will show my kids....
@iClimbEverything
@iClimbEverything 5 месяцев назад
What kind of stupidity is this? Waiting for a storm to put on your most aero clothes to push with the wind to take “KOMs”, which ironically stands for King of the mountain and you’re not even climbing a single meter. Any person could just make 100 of various segments on any road and just wait for some wind to beat you. Common, get yourself together
@FlyingGravelMan
@FlyingGravelMan 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment and for sharing your thoughts. I understand where you're coming from and appreciate the opportunity to explain my perspective. The concept of "descending off the Dutch mountain" is a playful term we use in the cycling community to describe riding with strong tailwinds, especially in a country as flat as the Netherlands. The challenge and excitement come from trying to maximize the advantage of these rare conditions to set personal bests or "KOMs". While I recognize that it's different from traditional climbing efforts, it's another way to enjoy and challenge ourselves in the sport of cycling. It's all about embracing the conditions we're given and finding new ways to push our limits. I hope this clarifies the intent behind the video and I'm grateful for your engagement. Happy cycling!
