72 burnt cast iron welding rod is a nickel-free electrode that penetrates deep to seal in porosity generating contaminants prior to finishing the weld with 77 cast iron electrode.
77 electrode is ideal for its non-cracking and machinability characteristics, however, it may not be able to bond to burnt or heat-affected cast iron parts. In these circumstances, 72 is the rod of choice. 72 electrode is used for a cladding operation, then the weld is completed with 77.
This all-position welding rod easily clads heat oxidized and oil-impregnated castings, penetrates deep into burnt cast iron, anchoring the weld, and is highly crack resistant. It has a tensile strength of 62,000 psi, which is stronger than the base cast iron.
72 does not require pre-heating or special cooling, and is recommended for repairing dirty, burnt cast iron parts such as wood stoves, boiler and furnate grates, exhaust manifolds, and compressor parts.
