1. There are limits to the amount of hours the residents can get paid to work. 2. This is a surgical specialty. Definitely dont do anything surgical (even ob/gyn) if you dont want long, busy call shifts. Psychiatry residents RARELY work this much. Not all doctors work the same amount 3. I went into medicine specifically for the 16 and 24 hour in-house call shifts available to CRNAs. If they were illegal, I would not be interested in anesthesia
@@mjradi4371 Which is weird because there's more pre-med students than ever before, yet always shortage of doctors. Weird how that works right? Almost like they want to drain all they can out of 1 doctor
The fact they make a surgeon work this many hours in a row is mind boggling. Makes zero sense. Obviously it’s not your fault. The system is totally messed up. You are amazing!
it's the same for every type of physician resident. my sister was in psychiatry---that is, the people prescribing you pills. she got the craziest hours ever for days straight just like this woman. awful. its a money grab because residents make less than public school teachers (per hour). it's a dangerous system that is archaic and puts patient safety at risk. some doctors that are out of training can have similar hours... but never this bad again, and for obviously much more fair pay.
This video is a prime example of how busy a doctor is. She filmed this during the winter holidays and it is now being uploaded. More power unto you Dr. Sanchez!
Whenever I think I have had a long day at work and I am exhausted and feel like I cannot go on, I will think of you. Thank you for taking care of people.
Dr. Sanchez, Thank you for studying for years, sacrificing most of your life, and working so hard to be come a surgeon so that you can help us all when we really need it.
These hours are not necessary. Maybe in the past they had a purpose but now it’s dangerous and can cause deadly mistakes. No one makes good decisions when they’re exhausted.
It doesn't make any sense to work a surgeon this hard. If someone is going to cut into my body they better be well rested and relaxed. If not the chance of making a mistake is high. It shouldn't be allowed.
I work in theatre daily, sorry to tell you but the surgeons are for sure not rested… They are just very good at there job, but i have definitely seen overly exhausted surgeons operating.
& AGAIN I will say…. how in the world are football players, reality tv cast making MILLIONS?!?!?! yet the amazing selfless kind hardworking dedicated ones who are putting their lives on line &/or saving lives, not even make much $@all??? not even for all they do!! my son within past year has enlisted in the army & when I tell u what hes already missed out on, all hard work he’s done & when he told me that he makes like $2500 month I wanted to throw up!! Thank God for giving us heros/angels such as Drs police officers nurses military etc…. Thank you for all u do❤❤❤❤
I completely understand what you mean & am empathetic to your situation, however, it’s important to realize that salaries are based on how profitable an industry is. Football is extremely dangerous & it’s not uncommon for athletes to have body issues post retirement. Furthermore, football is a multibillion dollar industry, how is it fair for that revenue to stay with team owners and not the players? Furthermore, most actors aren’t extremely rich (it’s not uncommon for ones in LA to work Uber in between gigs). Once again, if they are making the big bucks, it’s because the film industry is a very profitable business, evident by how many people consume television & film on a day-to-day basis. I’d much rather the athletes and actors make the money rather than CEOs who know little about how hard it is to become an amazing athlete or actor.
@@qetsiyah1766 I think the issue is that millions or billions of dollars are put into the military, but not the actual people that are risking their lives on duty it’s going to weapons and what not. Same concept with being a cop or doctor. Health insurance is crazy these companies and hospitals make millions but aren't properly paying their workers who are saving lives/risking their lives. Whereas football may be dangerous but it’s for entertainment reasons, they put themselves on the field knowing they can get hurt but will have millions at the end of it. People get deployed and killed or severely handicapped and their family isn't left with much because they weren't making much.
I completely understand you, but to be honest I don’t study medicine for the money haha and if you ask a lot of my friends they will tell you the same, we knew well before we started that we had to work a lot and even work in two different places in the day just to make money to pay bills, but when we see patients who are in pain and we can help them that’s what pushes us to continue everyday, helping people and taking their pain away is just amazing, or even if we can’t help them, just to talk to them and make them comfortable is something that very few people have the privilege of doing.
You are literally such a GREAT ROLE MODEL ! the fact that you are on the go and have time for your family is INSANE!!! your daughter will look at this and be proud of you !!
I dont know whats more impressive your work or how you mange to sustain work life balance Edit: I appreciate the love I’m getting on this comment I say Impressive sparingly, because on one hand the life style she has is slowly killing her and we shouldn’t normalize it and think its healthy or sustainable for even a second and on the other hand masochism and grind culture is the only way you can justify this work load. Surgery will really break you apart just to build you up again lol.
Thank you! I definitely try to maintain a positive attitude but it is not hard and the system is not the best! There is so much room for improvement. I do wish my life was actually balanced but unfortunately we make sacrifices for a better future!
Yay, another video. New subscriber from London. My god I had no idea how hard you guys work doing this!!! Huge thanks from us all that needed your service and surgeons around the world. How long can one sustain these kind of hours! Your so inspiring and incredibly beautiful 💖🙏🏻
Loved your last comment on how you would love to follow through with all of your patients. That tells me how dedicated you are as a surgeon and you care about your patients and well being. I find medicine fascinating. I always wanted to be a surgeon but life gets in the way.
It shouldn’t. That’s how deadly mistakes happen and hospitals will cover it up and no wonder surgeons are cranky and have attitudes cause they tired as hell!
I dont know and care what others have to say...but surely you are my inspiration...i keep coming back to watch your videos again and again to get my sanity back ...and keep pushing myself and try to stay very positive throughout...lots of love from INDIA❤
Thanks for sharing a tiny bit of yourself, your care for those patients who suffer with some form of illness and need medical attention with hundreds of people on RU-vid. Take care of yourself and your daughter.
As I watched this I repeatedly asked myself “How is she doing this” and you still had enough energy to make a RU-vid video 😅 I have so much respect for you 💗💗💗
Everytime my mom asks me what I want to be when I graduate I always tell her about you 🥹! I am only a sophomore in high school and you have inspired me to hopefully be the first Surgeon in my Mexican family!! Thank you so much Dr. Sanchez 💕
The amount of coffee and sugar to sustain you throughout the 72 hr shift 😵💫 you're amazing for still being so positive and tired! If it were me, my eyebags and dark circles would be so bad.
Attending surgeons don't work this hard. They still work relatively hard compared to all other specialties (averaging 60-70 hours a week) but they don't do resident calls like this. They do all the surgeries but don't do all the scut work. Plus the attending salary helps.
I am sorry, but I couldn't not ask this question...when are you supposed to sleep? I mean, one all-nighter is enough to make me a zombie, how are you capable of performing tasks requiring precision and sharp mind to complete?
Dr. Sanchez we (the other residents) need your secret to being so positive and finding the time to do it all. Also we need your tips for being so confident on camera and just vlogging. Such an inspiration!
I wanted to thank you for everything you do in this world 🌎❤ I was mpo three mths. Gallbladder. They wanted to send me to the mayo clinic in Oklahoma. It was sad times. 3 ercps. With gave me pancreatitis, set us back 2 wks. Nothing could get my stones out. I was in some small percentile of a small/ narrow GI tract. I ate relatively healthy, wasnt over weight, 30 yr old. It was KU med and St. Joseph that teamed up to put a stint through my liver and dilate my bial duct to release the stones. I kept it in about a week. That pain was insufferable. I was on morphine the entire time and 97 lb by the time I left. I have such respect for you and those who saved my life. 💕
I love your videos this is pushing me through school! It does look very tiring and hard and omg those hours are just insane but I personally like this workstyle so thank you and wishing you the best and take don't forget to take care of your health and self!
Thank you to you and all hospital staff for the hard work and long hours ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I’m so sorry we / the system / the government hasn’t worked out a better way or solution so you can be thriving and not just surviving due to workload and hours.
Love that you have your name and creds embroidered on your scrub cap!! Excellent idea!! Your daughter is precious ❤️ Hubs had a chole and he said it hurt more than his Triple CABG!!
@@thedaisysanchez hello doc! ur welcome. Doc can I ask for some financial help for my studies?🥺 I’m a 2nd year medical student also (BS NURSING) studying here in Philippines. Any amount will do for my tuition, allowances, transpo, apartment fee this upcoming sem 3rd year. 🙏🙏🙏
Orthopedic surgeon who works for himself is the best job. You choose what surgery you want to do. Here in NY the orthos pile up 15 meniscus surgeries a day 2 days a week and the other 3 days in piling up patients to see if they are candidates for surgery. It takes 7 mins per patient for the visit… Roughly 65 patients in 1 day. Huge money maker!
The docters buffet was actually pretty slick when I was in as a patient. They always condoned it when a patient comes to grab food (the food was always better), as the only patient that knew how to even get there where only a hand full that have been there a LOT.
Hola Doctora! Fourth Year med student and incoming Pediatrics intern. I love you showing your comal y las quesadillas se me antojaron jaja. Felicidades por representar a nuestra gente. Bendiciones, exito!
It never fails to amazes me how long surgeons can work. I was meant to to get a surgery done today but they cancelled it as they didn't know what my cysts were lying on and they re looked at the scans.
You are amazing Daisy!!! What you do is super human. Unfortunately, this is the inhumane way we teach our future healthcare providers. While there has been some improvement in the way we train our non surgical specialties, the surgical specialties remain draconian. So for those medical students deciding on their specialty, buyers be aware 😢
My mom is a doctor and honestly I have so much respect for you and every doctor. People don’t realize that you basically give up so much stuff and experiences while you’re in medical school. You sacrifice so much and all people say “ they make so much money “ duhh they worked their ass off and continue to do so every time they get to work ! People don’t realize how much work you do as a doctor! I never saw my mom but she made sure to be as involved as she could while working ❤
I just discovered your channel. My gosh you look tired. I give you props though. I agree these hours need to change bc this can’t be safe for you as a surgeon. Obviously you love what you do and I love seeing female surgeons!!!! Can I ask how you decided on general surgery? I’ve had my gall bladder out after my third baby. That was more painful than labor!!! First ER told me 3 hour wait and I’m like nope off to the next ER. Keep up the good work, you definitely a role model for the younger generation!!! PS your daughter is adorable.
How often do you have to do 72 hour call? Also, does attendings do these shifts? Lastly, if a big case came in between the time you should have went home and the time to come back to work do you have to just stay?
I am a 4th year medical students, my main dream is to become a Neurosurgeon Inshaeallah, I'm so struggling with my studies and this video gave me so much motivation thank you so much ❤❤❤
Dr. Sanchez, how did you organize day care for your daughter, I'm wondering how it is in the US. Here in Germany we have daycare about 7.30am - 16.pm. Kind regards ❤
72 hour call is disgusting. I knew on my surgery rotation it was NOT for me, i skipped my 7th 12 hour shift in a row they required for med students cause its retarded to work that much when youre literally PAYING to be there. Im so glad there are people like you to do this cause we need great surgeons. Ill be over here enjoying my upcoming intern year with 6 months of electives, no call and no nights. Then off to rad onc to work banker hours :D
I'm 19, I just started school to go for my Bachelors in BBA(I'll be done in 1 year and 6 months). After I plan on going to medical school to become a general Surgeon. Your videos are really helpful and I love it!!!!!
Did you ever get pushback for wearing lashes as a surgical resident/in the OR? I’m starting residency in July, and I want to start getting lashes bc I’m too lazy for makeup in the morning and wanna look a little bit put together lollll😂
Happened to find this video and, being a medical student myself, I already love the way you talk about your cases and your routine, loved to see it, give us the details 🥰
Seriously want to know. Are there rules that come with Surgeons and their health? For ex. Medication- What if said medication causes drowsyness. Can you still perform a surgery? What if you have a mental illness like ADHD/MDD/BP ect. Does that affect you being able to work legally?
