Spent 72 hours in Fukuoka, Japan for a Tsugaru Shamisen Performance, and things didn't exactly end well. At least I was able to have some Ramen!

Hey Everyone!! 14 years since the last trip to Fukuoka I still have like 8-10 tapes left of my first trip to Japan. I wonder if I should continue that series... Let me know what you think!

Yep you should continue the other series 😜 I like Fukuoka, nice comfortable city with nice people ... Did have a an amusing time at that Canal City shopping mall as when I was cutting back through it there were a couple of small local musical group doing a sound check for a performance an hour later. Listening to the sound check they were reasonably good so I picked up a couple of CDs and hung around for the performances (the mother of one of the performers was trying to get me to meet the group's as I'd bought the CDs and was a foreigner lol) I have to admit I get worried when you are ramming the shamisen together each time. And yes, if I break/lose something I'm normally down about it for quite a while afterwards ...

Shit happens - That lens breaking is a good thing! It made the sunset a personal experience rather than more work, and now you have a great excuse to go lens shopping!

I still can't believe the beauty of the architecture in Japanese cities, especially at night with the gorgeous lighting. If I went there, I'd probably never want to leave!! Don't be upset about your lens breaking. Although it is heartbreaking, one one door closes, another opens. You still have all the videos it helped you make, and that is what is truly important.

My drone dunked into the sea. Was sad at first due to the circumstances, but that made me re-explore other filming techniques on the ground which has helped me make better videos. Now I'm ready to go back into getting a drone, but with a ton of new knowledge. Hope you get a better replacement for your lens!

Hey Norm A few years back if something bad or unfortunate happened it would totally ruin my day, maybe even my week. I have gradually, through a lot of work on letting things go, gotten much better about these sorts of things. I have made a effort to surround myself with positivity. Part of that is positive folks like you. You probably don't realise how much of an influence you are on people with your videos, but I'll tell you right now, you help me with this aspect of my life almost daily. Thank you for that and all you do! Your friend John

And so we continue my journey through the Normchive. Honestly I feel like in the last few years I've gone through similar stages where yeah it would suck to have a lens break but being able to enjoy other aspects of a day still. It's one of the reasons that initially drew me to the channel: the attitude towards things that you have/strive to have.

Fukuoka is definitely one of my next destinations when I go back to Japan together with Kyoto and Sendai, hopefully next year! Ahh I feel so bad for the lense but I love how you still stayed in good mood, can learn from you And the first Ramen I ever had in Japan was from Ichiran, I didn't want to eat anything else after that😂

I agree with your new pattern of thinking about life. I too have broken a favorite camera while traveling. I was visiting London three years ago on a Saturday, walking down the street my camera backpack caught on a pole and my 5D struck the ground breaking the mirror and shutter assembly. I was scheduled to do a photo shoot the next morning. I was really stressed about it at first but decided to stop for coffee (coffee fixes many things). I calmed down and weigh my options. I struck up a conversation with a local patron of the coffee shop. We discussed what happened and she informed me that there was a second hand camera shop about two blocks away from me. It was one of the best camera shops I have visited in a long time. Lots of choices. I ended up walking out with a pre-owned 1D to complete my photoshoot with. To this day it was one of my most memorable trips. Life experiences evolve into many different things. Perspective changes everything. How we choose to manage our thoughts and choices makes all the difference.

Typical Saturday in my life. On call for ambulance, binging Norm videos. And loving it! Freaked out a little when i saw the shamisen in pieces 😲
@Berserker4u

Funnily enough, during my last trip to Osaka my tripod failed and smashed my lens. After the first shock I accepted the challenge and looked for a new lens. I found a nice little shop that sold used camera lenses and I made a great deal and I could even repair my broken lens back in Germany. It’s only a soulless camera lens after all, so my best advice is to just laugh about it and take on the challenge to find the best solution. That’s part of life and stuff breaks. Never let that destroy your mood.

Hi Norm! It is so hard to just let something like that not ruin your day! But l’ve had good things happen from the one disaster. It’s such a surprise when you can not be disappointed when bad things happen. Sometimes everything works out in the end. I love the beautiful sunset you showed us. I’m so glad your performance went well. Looking for the next one you can take us with you. Stay positive & enjoy all the times you are having. 👏🏻🤗🌸

There was a day where I rode a bike from the Hague to take a ferry from the Hook of Holland to England and had to ride from my arrival at Ipswich to Wivenhoe. I did not understand my timing quite right and rode through the darkness to the place I was staying. It was dark, cold and I was a bit lost on my bike. I learned a fair bit about leaning into the moment and just embracing the adventure of it all. Seems you have learned a bit about that kind of embrace of adversity as well. Good luck advenurer. I have to sleep now, but I do like your vids. Keep up the adventures and thanks again for sharing.

Hey! We were first introduced to you in one of Sharla’s videos when she was first trying to convince you to go big on RU-vid. You were so quiet back then! I’m glad you sort of relaunched for this season, really enjoying all the content you’re putting out... and you come with a bonus! Great photography! Sorry about your lens. But now on to the joys (and financial heartache) of getting a new one! Keep up the great work!

Ooh I love RU-vidr inception . I was just watching the video where Rachel unboxes the mic you recommend haha. And I've totally broken things like that -- phone screens, laptops, ya know, things you need when your work for yourself. But I always think of it as a new opportunity to be creative, start fresh, or try something new. Glad to see you looking so happy and positive!

14 years ago (from 2021) I was in Fukuoka, visiting a friend who was staying with a host family while he learned Japanese. I was there during the Ramen Festival! It was amazing, there was this one yatai that always had a huge queue while the others had small queues, I thought it was stupid to wait but on the last day I was there I cracked and well...there was a reason there was a long queue! I didn't go to the place you went in this video, but I did go to Ramen Stadium - which was good too.

Awesome video Norm. I remember having a yellow pencil case of crayola colouring pencils. There was a pentel pocket brush pen inside it. On one specific day the pencil case went missing. I couldn't even find it when me and my family moved house. What hurt the most was that the pocket brush pen had catridges that can last for months. I was annoyed for a week and chose to save money just so I can buy another brush pen. This was back in my late teens. The one I currently have has lasted for about a year. This video reminded me about the memory.

Awesome video. I feel you on the pre-show jitters, I've been doing circus/juggling/fire performing on and off for maybe 8 or so years, and right before the show I'm always super nervous, show starts and I'm in go mode, and when it's over, I sometimes feel like time moved so quickly and both exhausted but amped up from the positive energy of the crowd/audience. Also, regarding your question, when I was younger I definitely used to let things bother me and make me upset, but as I've grown in age, I find it's been easier to let some things go and try to stay positive about everything. One of my bosses used to say something like, "Be like a duck and let problems roll off your back like water off a duck's back." *shrug* The more you do it, I've found, the easier it is to continue staying positive through difficult situations and loss. Looking forward to seeing your next video!

Hi Norm, thanks for sharing. I had to re-wind at one point when I realized there was a motor bike hanging from someone's balcony! So odd! I'm sorry for the loss of your lens. :( I can't wait to hear more of your shamisen music. In answer to your question, I have always been a very "eh, it is what it is" person in terms of losing/breaking things, or negative situations (that aren't super serious). My thoughts have always been that getting angry or upset for any longer than the moment when it happens, does not do anything good for you, the people around you, nor does it help the situation. People often think I do not get angry or upset. I do, momentarily, but to the best of ability I always just try to acknowledge the disappointment/hurt and then find ways to either a) not let it happen again if I can b) replace it c)find something even better Hope that helps. :) PS: What did Jun make for dinner?!? This is an important question. ;)

This is obviously long after your video, but per your question: My only pair of shoes got destroyed while in a remote village. We visiting friends in a village in Sichuan, China, and the entire bottom of my sneakers (rubber part) separated from the cloth part. Our ride wasn't coming back for another 3 days (i.e. to go back to a city where any shops were), so it made walking anywhere interesting - no paved roads, all dirt or home-made bricks. I don't recall it ruining the trip, so maybe I had a good attitude? The surroundings were gorgeous, that's for sure.

This could be my first ever comment on your videos. I listen to the podcast more, but my app doesn't allow comments as far as I remember. Anyway.. Your video just reminded me of how I had to replace my phone yesterday. Dropped it somewhere at the start of a 12hr night shift. I was devastated! I wasn't angry. But I stressed over having to buy one before I planned to. I guess it was its time (there were some serious signs of wear and tear). Anyway, thanks for doing the podcasts! Makes my day every time.

So jelly if you got to eat Jun's cooking. I use his okonomiyaki recipe all the time. Loss of a lens sucks, especially if it's a really good one. I think I'd have a little frustration with having to wait on a replacement lens if I knew I could have the new one in a day or two living in Tokyo. You'd still have to wait a day or two with Prime here in CO. I usually just roll with things as they come at me, maybe not completely positive but not negative either - don't sweat the "small" stuff, though the exceptions to that have been the medical emergencies and losses of my maternal family over the last 2 years. The reactions there have been heavy shock, anger, anxiety, and sorrow. It may take some time but things can be replaced, people cannot. Congratulations on the performances, and hope many more are headed your way. I think you said the intro is you playing? Any chance we'll get to hear the full song if it's not just a clip?

Finally catching up with some of your videos after having a really busy November and December. I wanted to answer your question about breaking/losing needful items. I'm more of a loser than a breaker. And I tend not to notice that I've lost something right away - it's usually on the next time I need it that I realize it's gone. Depending on the item, it's actually really upsetting, because most of the time, the item is so important to me that I just don't understand how I could have lost it. It makes me wonder what's happening to my brain that I can't keep track of something so important, which is frightening. Plus then I have the frustration of either trying to find it back or else trying to find a replacement item that's just as good. So it's really difficult for me to see it in a positive way. If something breaks, on the other hand, most of the time I can deal and it doesn't ruin my day. If I can just let go of the fear that my losing important and useful things so easily us a sign of my impending dementia, it would probably be easier to shrug it off.😕

Depemding on the stressful situation, but one thing I learned in marching band that has carried through my life. Mistakes happen and if you try to over correct you can make a small issue a bigger one. So own the mistake, and keep pressing forward. Ooh love Fukuoka! Such an underrated destination for those travelling to &/or throughout Japan. I visited for the first time in March this year & was really impressed. The food was incredible - all the little 'Yatai' that pop up as the sun sets are awesome for a quick cheap decent meal & chat with locals - or in my case, practise Japanese! The nightlife is great too (I think the music scene there may even be better than Toyko - there I said it!). Oooh Norm I feel for you losing your lens like that - it's gotta sting a bit! But like you said, better to brush it off with a 'shit happens' attitude than dwell on it. They are replaceable, albeit expensive. Think of it like this - it could have been the Shamisen that broke instead *gasps of horror*. I recently travelled across Asia with some gear including a recently purchased/upgraded laptop. I dropped it as I was entering customs back in my own country aghhhhh!! All that time spent travelling & lugging it around with no issue & I drop it in my home city airport! It has a major dint in the side (looks a bit like crumpled paper/kinda cool!) but it still works, so I was lucky.

I also lost my fave lens about 9 years ago when I was photographing planes taking off at Maho Beach in Sint Maarten (if you haven't heard of this beach, look it up- it's a fabulous place for aviation geeks!). A freak storm came out of nowhere - rain and sand blew onto my DSLR at over 100 km/h. Long story short - sand got into my lens and it was pretty much bust from there on out. I didn't handle it well. I cried, swore and threw some tantrums the rest of the trip. I'd like to say I'd handle it differently now that I'm older and wiser, but probably not 🤣

The most recent thing that happened tho was that a friend i was going to a concert with was anxious that i wont be able to make it in time before the concert starts so i had to miss it. I was really upset. But i decided to make full use of the free day n go to Harajuku to shop till i drop. I walked so much that day, i got back to the hotel ard 4pm, took a shower, put on some new clothes n just wandered around Asakusa. It was alrd in the evening n there wasn’t any crowd so it felt so relaxing. The old me wld have just stayed in the hotel n cried while curling up in bed the whole day lol. I’m so glad i decided to go out n not waste a day in tokyo! I’m glad to see u still being positive despite what happened to your lens! ✨

I can’t wait to visit Fukuoka one day!!! But as far as lost or broken things, I visited japan this last spring and I lost my card holder on the shinkansen (with my debit card, suica card, and train ticket). I also somehow lost a bracelet that was a birthday gift from my mom that same day. I handled it really well, stayed positive (i.e. I cried in my hotel room lmao)

So I unfortunately get pretty severe anxiety whenever something goes missing, but I have been working on ways to help that. I'm glad you got in there before the typhoon hit at least. And I really enjoyed the Beppu livestream.

I'm not surprised by the better nightlife in Fukuoka compared to Tokyo. Never been to Japan but I've heard that Tokyo is more career oriented, while Fukuoka is more laid back and an easier place for foreigners, with their different lifestyles, to live.

I think years ago, I was more (OCD) attached to the few things I had, so it was crushing when those things were destroyed or vanished. I've grown a lot in the last seven years, and found I was able to be okay and move on, when it happens. There are more pressing things in life.

RIP Sigma lens Yes, on a vacation, walking across a sky bridge in Costa Rica I lost some lens filters and cover. Not as tragic as your loss, but frustrating. I just carried on. It wasn't going to ruin a fantastically beautiful trip. That was a spectacular sunset Thanks for sharing

Thanks for another great video and for sharing part of your daily life. I haven't destroyed something accidentally that I would say I rely on for my work, like your favorite lens, but I did accidentally destroy one of my very favorite earrings. It was so painful to see this lovely, unusual earring in pieces after I ran over it. :-(. I tried to stay positive and tell myself that I shouldn't be so attached to things. The result: I really haven't been able to look at it or attempt get it repaired. ... I hope you got a great replacement for your lens!

Fukuoka is a place in Japan I have always wanted to visit. If I have destroyed something like that, dear and expensive? No not that I can think of. When it comes to electronic stuff like smartphones, computer and so on I tend to be really careful with them, and I ride my smartphones naked :D Norm, more shamisen please, I love it and those tiny moment you are teasing us with it just drives me crazy ha ha

It's nothing compared to you but I waded into a lake with some friends.... with a camera in my pocket still. It had around ~100 pictures on it from an event the day before, and nothing was salvageable. But, that directly led me to replacing a point-and-shoot with my first DSLR, so it wasn't all bad!

My apt burned down while I was on my visit trip to Switzerland. I was 26 at the time and had a decent job but no renter's insurance. I was devastated. I was also in my junior year in college full time at night with full time work during the day. When I was sleeping at my friend's house. I looked at the silver lining. I wanted to move out of the state anyways. So i had a clean break. Lost it all. Moved to NYC after graduation with no items. Started fresh. Met my now wife and we relocated to the state I've been trying to live since I was 21. Sunny California. Always find the positives, even when times are difficult.

I was surprised to see how cheap the Sigma lens was on Amazon (USA) $338.78, but you might be able to beat the price in one of the Tokyo camera shops. Camera stuff insured? From the preview, I thought we were going to see your outdoor shamisen performance. I always love the low key Japanese lounge jazz, very relaxing.

I've got simillar situation twice. For the first time, it was about the data on my external storage. My brother used the storage without even asking me and I don't know what he've done there, but 90% of the data got corrupted. I've managed to restore most of this, but unfortunately I couldn't save the most important ones - my writings. I know, that you should always have a backup of the most important files but during that time, I had no internet access at all and my father was a maniac with reinstalling windows like every month. My reaction? I've never finished those stories (I was uploading them on wattpad) because I literally couldn't revive the spirit, that made me write them for the frist time. (and ofc I've got mad at my brother, I was like 15). For the second time - my ex gf broke a mug from my best friend. I really loved her, so I just smiled and said "it happens". I need to mention, that I'm a really sentimental person but she was way more important 😊

I used to play the flute and started learning in sixth grade and my mom went ahead and bought me one second hand that was still a really good instrument. I stopped playing when I went off to undergrad (living in a dorm is not conducive to playing a live instrument). Once I had my own place I wanted to pick it up again....except my flute has disappeared. My parents moved after I graduated high school and we can't find it anywhere. I'll forget that it's lost and will have random moments of wanting to play again and then I remember it's gone.
@TokyoLens

That’s such a heartbreaking story... ever considered picking up another one? Or for you, is it just THAT flute?
@xXStephanieReginaXx
@xXStephanieReginaXx 5 лет назад
@@TokyoLens Well on one hand I would like to find it because it was my first instrument plus I'm super curious to where it got to. On the other, at this point it's been so long since I've played I would basically have to be retaught cause I barely remember how to even read music. I've even thought about picking up a new instrument (piano, guitar or violin) after I finish grad school so I would actually have time.

Looking on the bright side of things leads to a lower blood pressure. :) If you look at thing positively it's so much better for your health. I've always looked more at the positives of a situation than the negatives, it's probably why I'm the only one in the family with low blood pressure. I hope you have been enjoying your weekend so far! Have a great Sunday!!

Oh Man! I'm so sorry about your camera lens :( At least it wasn't your shamisen. I'm glad that your performances went so well and that you had such a good time in Fukuoka. Are you sure there's no way to repair the lens? Looks like the glass is still O.K. I admire the way you take the good with the bad. As Matt Smith said as the Eleventh Doctor Who: “The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.” The trick is to not let the bad things overwhelm you. I've struggled with that all of my life, but you seem to have the knack. Cherish that.
@TokyoLens

Thanks so much eh Not worth the repair time/cost Easier cheaper and quicker to just grab the same lens used or new somewhere!

As soon as I saw the thumbnail I knew exactly what happened and it was very much an “oh no...” kind of reaction. And it’s pretty gratifying to see someone say they film stuff so they can remember it when there’s so many people who think you should just live in the moment and remember things without photos and video because that’s literally not an option for me. I have aphantasia so I have no visual memory. (It’s different for everyone. I.e. my dad’s memories and visual thoughts are all in black and white but clear as photos, some people can “see” images in other forms...my the inside of my mind is black.i can dream in images but that’s the only time I can see things mentally) so, I can remember facts. Like if I saw that sunrise I could remember it was bright, maybe what side the clouds were on, etc. but I would never be able to see the image again without a photo or video.

Whenever I destroy something that means a lot to me, I'd be really angry for a moment and can't really help it and then it's just something in the past. I've noticed that I get less depressed by loss of material things the older I get, but it still takes a toll after 31 years of being alive.
