How refreshing to see someone who actually knows how to build a house. I am an old retired builder so I can see when someone knows their business and who is just blowing smoke. I love it.

Using 2 X 4's for outside walls with a second floor??? That wouldn't pass building codes for a second floor..supposed to use 2 X 6's for the outside walls with a engineer rim banning boards..sorry bud. But I disagree with that build with a second floor plan. What's the saying? Close enough for government work?? Lol

The diamonds are used for a 19 3/16 “ spacing which is sometimes used in commercial construction. If you look at specs on some engineered wood products like I joists they show specs for 193/16” spacing I’ve noticed the lumber is a lot better than the crap we get in Alaska.

The black diamonds which appear every 19 3/16” on metal tape measures are for spacing I-beam “timbers.” Several wood-product manufacturers offer I-beam “timbers” as a substitute for solid lumber floor joists. The diamond marks on tape rule blades are for spacing these engineered floor joists in new construction.

So sorry for the loss of the house. My eldest bro had the same disaster many moons ago with the home they built out on community property. Thank God they and the 3 kids escaped but they lost everything. It's great when you have family who can pull together to help rebuild . This has to be one of the very best building vids I've watched and believe I've watched a few. The old man is a hoot. I'm nearly 70 but this guy reminds me of my wiley old Dad. He was a dairy /sheep/pigs farmer but he was a beautiful carpenter to boot. Every skill he had was self taught !!! Can't wait for your next video. But slow the pace please I want to watch this for a good long while. LOL Abundant Blessings to y'all from Aussie ( I was born & raised in Sth Otago NZ, with one dairy farm in Nth Qld for 5 yrs. Heat darn near killed my Mum so Dad sold up & took her home. Yet another dairy farm. Hahahaha 4 in total and the last one when he was nearly 80 was hill country that ran sheep. His old body seized up and he was gone @85. Let a man keep doing what he enjoys or you'll kill him. What a great family this is. Does your bro and wife have an Amazon list that your followers could help out with ??? My heart went out to the wee lass who lost her fave book to the fire. Something like that I could buy on Amazon wish list. 🇦🇺🤗💞🙏👌👍✌️👏👊🇺🇸

That’s a huge compliment, thank you so much 😊 Randy has been building his whole life, hardest worker I know and unbelievably talented and yes, funny as all get out. The kids have adjusted very well though do mention things they lost in the fire and I feel so bad they no longer have their prized possessions. They do have mom and dad and each other though and of course that’s what matters. We do have an Amazon wish list, most is stuff for us to enhance the channel but I did add some gift card options if someone is compelled to get the kids something. They can do their own shopping which I’m sure they’d enjoy 😊 The Amazon wish list is under the Description of this video.

@@ouralaskahomestead Thankyou for your prompt reply I shall follow your directions to see how getting them a gift card works. I'm def not very savvy about how internet abd it's nany attachments work. LOL I just read my original comment and apologise profusely for the lousy incorrect grammar, yikes !!!! Mother was originally an ENGLISH TEACHER, before becoming a dairy farmers wife abd mother of 7 kids ..DOUBLE YIKES . They bred 'em tough back then. I see nany if those traits in this channel, hence my admiration I suspect. I'd best stop before I have to apologise again for the length of my ramblings. It's lovely to meet kindred spirits the online, even tho we're thousand of miles apart. When y'all gather for dinner and stop to give thanks, know there's an old girl in Aussie lifting your entire family into the throne room of God and asking Him to speak clear guidance into your hearts & minds for each day . This is not a great time to be on the Alcan, very icy currently. Best to travel it before snow arrives or later after it’s completely snow covered. Caution him around Steamboat Mountain and Stone Mountain. Those are, imo, the worst areas. Check updated road conditions on FB, Driving the Alcan - Alaska Canadian Highway, page. Tell him to “stay safe” for us.

The small black diamonds on a tape measure serve an important purpose. They’re joist marks, indicating standard spacing for framing. These marks are placed at 19.2-inch intervals, guiding precise stud placement for walls. This innovative spacing optimizes material use, enhances stability, and streamlines building projects12. So, next time you see those diamonds, you’ll know they’re more than just decorative! 😊📏

In construction building. Outside walls are supposed to be made with 2 X 6's especially when a second floor is in the planning. Interior walls you can use 2 X 4 's outside walls being used cause it's required by law to use rim banning on the double top plates. Leaving room for the engineer I - Joists for the second floor.. building code inspections would fail that build here in the state of Maryland......good effort..
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead 8 месяцев назад
Sounds like a good reason not to live in Maryland. You gotta wonder how these 100yr old farm houses are still standing being built with 2x4’s. Thank goodness we don’t have to deal with codes and inspections around here.

I am assuming you drove back to Tennessee from Alaska. Have you ever considered taking the Alaska Marine highway ferry from Alaska? You can take your vehicle, and your dogs.
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead 24 дня назад
Yes we drive anytime we go down. Normally we’re towing a trailer. The ferry is quite expensive and very limiting on getting the dogs out. I think I read you can only get them out approximately every eight hours and even then there is no place to let them run and stretch their legs. We don’t mind the drive and it keeps them more comfortable. I’m sure the ferry would be fun, seeing the marine life.

All I’m gonna say is failing to plan, is planning to fail. No type of blueprints, even a handwritten sketch of your building plan would help. Asking where you want the door as you’re building is beyond my comprehension. I got to be honest guys, I can’t watch this anymore. Kids running around a building site. It’s too frustrating and I just keep shaking my head. I have written more comments and deleted them because I don’t want to insult anybody, but this is just too much. Maybe when you get back to Alaska I’ll try to catch up with you.
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead 3 месяца назад
This isn’t a building site, it’s their home. Everything they owned burned up. When you’re a kid those toys and clothes mean a lot. I’m sure it was quite traumatic for them. Did they get under foot, yes. Did it slow the process, yes. But getting them involved and “helping” build their new home was very important. It was also a good learning experience to see how family comes together when needed. As far as blueprints, Randy has been building his entire life. You wouldn’t chastise a musician for not using sheet music during a concert. It’s just not needed for someone with his expertise.
