There have been many proud chapters in Canada’s military history, but one of the best-known and most significant was the Liberation of the Netherlands in the closing days of the Second World War in Europe. Today, we mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (V-E) Day and honour all those who fought bravely in the cause of peace and freedom. #CanadaRemembers #Netherlands75 #VEDay75

Every year Holland gratefully sends tulips to Canada in Celebration of the Canadian Liberation. They also remember that Canada hosted the Queen of Holland in Ottawa during the War where Princess was born. My father fought in the Liberation of Holland and would not talk about it BUT had fond memories of the grateful Dutch people.

The Queen of the Netherlands Wilhelmina (not Holland) stayed in London during the war. Canada hosted the Crownprincess Juliana and her family.

@@criticasterh8242 Actually, the Canadian Government at that time did not JUST provide asylum; They actually declared the room she delivered the child in as "Extra-territorial" so that the babe would have Dutch Citizenship.

@@jesseray9944 when have the Americans evrr been short changed in glory. Your education system sucks. Hollywood never made it any better either. Question, on D day who landed in Europe? America had only 2 of the 5 beaches. Thats called 40 percent which also means 60 percent were NOT Americans America would have happily stayed out of the war, making and selling weapons. It finslly took Germany to declare war on you.

8) The Scheldt Battle: Canada’s toughest WW2 battle As the Allies were advancing through Continental Europe following the successful D-Day landings in 1944, the Canadians were tasked with liberating Northern Belgium and the Southern Netherlands. Because of the predominantly muddy and flooded terrain, the Canadians suffered heavy casualties in attacking well-fortified German positions, but ultimately prevailed. Some historians argue that the Canadians waged battle on the most challenging geographic environment on the Western Front." The Canadian War Museum My Father fought there with the Canadian Engineers and would NOT speak of it. He had endearing memories of the Dutch people who were Liberated. My Father also had a Hate for what the Germans despicably did to Holland and the Dutch people. After his Wife / Mother died my Father met a Dutch Dutch Family who invited him to a party of their friends. I drove him there and picked him up. Well, it turned out that the small Party had morphed then into a Thank The Canadian Liberator Party.

@@kevinyoung9053 From the records and alittle searching His unit like others had been split up to serve other units So his role could of been changed Priest were not well known for getting in close for conflicts to a paoint being wounded But thanks !

@@livingonadollar2882 actually priests( self propelled artillery) often got in very close used in direct fire mode especially in town fighting, nothing like a 105mm He round to convince enemy that it's a good idea to move to a different building and theywere often shelled by enemy counter battery fire many artillery guys got wounded nobody but an artillery guy Is called a bombadier lance bombadier is same as lance corporal, a single stripe on his sleeve, during and after large battles command would go around to other nearby units to ask for volunteers to serve as replacements to the engaged units which had taken many casualties because they were already the immediate area and could supply trained and often experienced replacements in a couple days instead of waiting a week or more for replacement requests to make its way back thru channels to a replacement depot a trained gunner Is not used as Inf, cooks or admin clerks sometimes ended up as Inf but not an arty gunner

Cape Breton Highlanders sent a bunch of volunteer replacements to 49rh loyal Edmonton regt in Ortona during that battle and the maritimers got along very well with the westerners. A lot of people have been surprised to find out in war records that their relative became a casualty serving in a different Regt then the family though they were attached to because the soldier my not have had time to inform his family back home that he had been transferred from his home Regt to another Regt as a replacement
