Starless - King Crimson, they have a live version that is pretty recent. They've changed members throughout the years, but Peter Fripp's guitar sound is immaculate
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f3C-bk7v6NA.html I haven't looked through the history of all your vids, but I didn't see any that cover warren Haynes. I would really love you to break this down. Love your videos man! Keep up the good work!
Sly And The Family Stone - If You Want Me To Stay Foster Sylvers - Misdemeanor P-Funk - Do That Stuff (live version) Pleasure - Glide Raydio - Hot Stuff Slave - Just A Touch Of Love Zapp - More Bounce To The Ounce S.O.S Band - Take Your Time (Do It Right) D Train - You’re The One For Me Extra Credit Bennie Maupin - It Remains To Be Seen The Crusaders - The Wells Gone Dry
Yes 777-9311 is indeed unbelievable funky and the greatest funk groove I'd ever heard when I first heard it! No surprise it was written by the one & only Prince, the greatest musician that ever lived. Anyway, thanks for this great funky video reaction! Worth mentioning is the American Funk band SLAVE, check them out, songs like "Stone Jam" and "Slide" are timeless Classics in the Funk department!
Cissy Strut by the Meters, it's the OG funky funk, but when everything drops out but the open high hats and bass kicks on the '4 and' Whoooooo!!! that's some stank!
Lol, this is Prince sir. Prince produced, wrote, played, sang. The record only has prince and Morris day on it. The members of the Time were contract employees.
This song ensorcelled me the first time I heard it, it's one of my favorite songs. I was disappointed a demo wasn't included on the Prince "Originals" project. There was a ridiculous amount of talent in Minneapolis during this period.
It probably wasn’t there because the Prince original WAS The Time’s original. He didn’t just write the song, he performed everything on that recording except Morris Day’s vocals.
From out of the Vulfpeck family I discovered Cory Wong -- This is one of the FUNKIEST guitarists playing today -- check this out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MT2_7RWOmro.html (tune is called "Work It Out" featuring Antwaun Stanley on vocals)
This is the song John played to get the gig with Prince. They did a great performance of this song in 2011 on the Welcome 2 Europe tour. John on drums and Prince on bass. It's worth tracking down and checking out.
Here's the video from 2011. He takes Ida's bass at the 4:50 mark and they go straight into this song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WxGd-rM6bFc.html
Jesse Johnson on Guitar was fantastic! He had a solo career too and kept it going with "Be Your Man" and "I Want My Girl". Little Short Guitar player, make your momma proud!
This is the coolest damn channel on RU-vid!! Not Post Malone and Taylor Swift .... But rather Widespread Panic, Umphreys McGee, and Morris Day and the Time!! 👊🏻🤜🏻💨
Prince played all the instruments on that track. Morris day just sang on top of princes vocals. You can hear prince singing if you listen with headphones. You do know they aren’t playing live on that video, right?
There is a video of a drummer covering the drums and and hi hat. He was close to Prince at one time. he speaks about 777-9311, using the drum machine. The studio version and the live version. If i remember, jimmy jam or terry lewis played the drums in the studio version. There were 2 versions of the hi hat. The drummer at the time had to learn the play the drum machine version for live concerts. Very interesting, check it out.
That's my boy Jessie Johnson on the guitar! He's from my home town and used to run around with the musicians my pops hung with! Good pick my man! So, you want some funk eh... check out Mayonnaise by the Headhunters.. my fav funky groove!
@@roderickbyrd8638 you're probably right. He pretty much micro managed and redid 90%of the acts he micro managed. Nothing against prince but Jessie was no slouch tho. Hell of a picker
Wow man, I've been preaching this for years. When I clicked on this I really expected to post 777-9311 in protest but since we're on the same page I'm gonna give you my close seconds. Do Do Wap is Strong in Here - Mayfield & Hang up Your Hangups - Hancock & the Headhunters. Side note, I saw the Time in '03 & it was the funkiest & most fun show ever!
The reason why that groove is so damned funky - that Linn Drum machine pattern was programmed by David Garibaldi - former drummer of Tower of Power, one of the funkiest bands on the planet!
Who gives a joint like this to someone else?! How?! Prince is the baddest mf to ever do it! And you’re right, it is the funkiest groove of all time. Best drum track! Best bass line! Best rhythm guitar and riff!
I agree the syncopation in that song is incredible me as a drummer 10 plus years still struggle to to get that coordination down its not easy takes a lot of time. That's so awesome you like funk man I'm a funk junkie too. Grew up on 90s hip hop from LA and out here in the 90s they were using all these funk tracks made we to learn more about funk so I studied it to the T. We should chat it up some day.
You are not wrong, sir. But for simplicity and raw effectiveness, I’ve always preferred Shining Star as the most effective funk. Just a plain old bass line on one, a-three. That’s all you need. Shining bright to see what we all can truly be.
Whoever mentioned Mr. Bungle (can't find comment now) thank you! That takes me way back. Completely forgot about them after I got rid of all my cassette tapes 20 years ago😀
Bernard "Nard" Wright (Bread Sandwiches) Don Blackman - Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide Tom Browne- Come For The Ride Norman Connors -Mr C George Duke-Dukey Stick and last Herbie Hancock-Knee Deep
Thank you so much for bringing this back for me. I loved that song since Day 1, but probably didn't have an adequate appreciation of/reverence for it until now.
I keep forgettin' by Michael McDonald Chic - everybody dance Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23 is like funk, disco and hendrix blended together. Sly and the family stone - Thank you for letting me be myself Larry Graham - Hair You can tell that I am a bass player. But the guitar riff on I keep forgettin is awesome too.
Not arguing that the cut is funky but their are so many funky cuts. James Brown - Get on the Good foot, Pfunk - Not Just Knee Deep (the 8 minute version), Pointer Sisters - How Long ( Betcha got a chick on the side), Isley Brothers - That Lady, Cameo - Rigamortis, Brother Johnson - Stomp. PFunk- Cholly. Prince - Gett Off (the remixes), Gwen McCrae - Funky Sensation, The Whispers - Keep on loving me, Envogue- My loving (neva gonna get it)
Couldn’t agree more about how funky this song is. I took lessons from Tori Ruffin who is Morris Day’s current guitarist. When he taught me this song, the chords he taught me were C5, slide to C#5, then A.
Right group, wrong song. Don't get me wrong...'777-9311' is a MONSTER. But 'Get It Up' is probably the funkiest of that era imo. Alot of close seconds though from that time period...'Wait For Me' by Slave, 'Paradise' by Change, 'Funkin For Jamaica' by Tom Browne, 'For Those Who Like To Groove' by Ray Parker Jr & Raydio just to name a few. Sooooooooo many great grooves back then. And if we going further I gotta say Graham Central Station's 'The Jam'.
Prince put together The Time and wrote most of their stuff, but they were very talented too. He said they were the only band he was scared of. I think it was around 1999-2000 Prince said he hoped they would get back together so he would have some competition.
Try Tower of Power "Vuela por Noche" or "On the Serious Side". Many other TOP funk songs I could mention, but these have some monster complicated funk rhythms. A challenge to pick out guitar part and trying to stay on beat.
First and foremost, thank you for all of your lessons. Especially The Grateful Dead stuff. I've learned a ton from you. Anyway, here are 3 songs from Mr. Bungle off of their first album. All 3 songs are nuts! They are insane with the funk!! 1) Carousel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UnLNXquIBVs.html 2) Squeeze Me Macaroni ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I8-UmsgDU6Q.html 3) Egg ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-km1uWUPQvcs.html
Tippi-Toes by The Meters is a fun, sorta deep cut that always gets the booty shakin Some bands worth looking into if you dont know them already: The New Mastersounds Lettuce (album after album of amazing funk) The Fearless Flyers (Vulfpeck spinoff with sick grooves) Galactic (Norleans funk, prefer their older albums but it's all good) Jazz is Dead (Jazzed up and funky versions of dead tunes, really love their cover of China Cat Sunflower. Jimmy Herring, Alphonso Johnson, Bruce Cobham, sick lineup!) Greyboy Allstars Some old Robert Randolph live shows from 02 - 05, they killed it everytime I saw him and his band live. Incredible energy and it came through in the music and many more I cant think of at 3 am. Cheers! and enjoy
Absolutely love Morris Day and the Time and 777-9311 is one super stanky funky tune along with Get it Up. Guitar part in 777-9311 is easy to play but you have to have stamina to keep it tight for the whole cut. All due respect to the Time, but going back to the roots and the blue print of OLDSKOOLFUNK, I got to roll with Sly Stone, James Brown, and PFunk...and even the Shakey Ground Temptations. These groups were all laying down classic grooves, waaaaay before MD and the Time and set the standard for the entire genre...in my opinion. 🤘🏾🤩
I'm a diehard Prince fan, but I have to agree. Despite everything that came after, save for maybe Pfunk, James Brown and Sly remain the funkiest. Poet, Luv N Haight, In Time, Thank You for Talkin To Me.... so far ahead of their time no one ever caught up. JBs Doing it to Death, You Can Have Watergate, I Can't Stand It, Mother Popcorn, Hot Pants Road.... the drummers are just too funky. It's TOO funky. Although Prince does have some genius moments where he approaches that level.
,..i searched My soul for a jam tighter and that F0nk-in the pocket type....Tower of Power.....Ohio Players...Brides of Funkenstein...Cameo....Earth Wind..Lakeside......Zaap-Roger Troutman.....Fred Wesley and Al Wilson...George and his son TreyLewd (Tracy Clinton).....Rick James....walked thru my lifes pleasure centerded membrain unto the highest Fonktivity..and you right,man.......this IS the tightest most 'in the pocket' fonk ever.....close to Princes "Girls and Boys" piece that grabs you and pulls you in ..on some nasty groove..with the Hispano version of Love Bizarre where the horns and conga play into the ducked in and out accent Bassline...i wana say Tower of Powers "what is hip"....but THAT "kind" of Funk just makes a Great aestehtic to the feelin.... and "what is Hip" by Tower of Power is a good example of perfectly timed placement and production.....the Fonk and timing and general attitude in This song (777-9311) makes all that in "what is hip" by Tower of Power, look like an event youd go TO.....while the Fonk involves you ....even involuntarily.........you can Lay in the funk....you dont dance to it..you know that you Are it.........if youd be so honest....so yeah...i agree bruh....minneapolis funk has that certain ingredient.
This is a great groove but of course its a branch off the pfunk tree. Bootsy & GC perfected to the groove before this. Check out the albums Ultra Wave & Sweat Band by Bootsy, (produced by George Clinton) And most grooves by pfunk have an edge on prince and morris day. Still ALL SOOO amazing and a blessing to planet earths rhythm dont get me wrong, I love morris day and zapp and prince but GC & Bootsy had already carved out a deep pocket for groups like this to fall into. deep deep deep. black hole pockets where time has its hand behind its back. Your vids are amazing man, I dig your peceptions, thanks!!
I'd submit my favorite groove may be Doo Wa Ditty from Zap and Roger. Same era as this and SUPER funky. Another is Now/ At the Party by Maxwell. Your ass will be bouncing 10 seconds in.
My cousin left LA and went to Alabama he left all his tape to me with Zap -the time and many other so you can’t go wrong on anything in that error pure Funk 😷
Great choice here! I'll take this or PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC'S "DR. FUNKENSTEIN!" Nothing but a slow, syrapy funk groove! I also like VANITY 6'S " NASTY GIRL" ( ALSO BY PRINCE) and PRINCES "LET'S WORK!" Great video. Great Reaction!
This is pretty good. Thanks for the new track to listen to! But recently I found the Bernard purdie sessions with steely Dan and my god. Just check out 'sign in stranger' or 'home at last'. Maaad groove.
No arguments from me on this one! When you break this track down, you really gain an appreciation for how sick the entire arrangement is. The only other track that comes close is also by Prince. Check out The Dance Electric!
