Didn't take long to fire up the '79 Yamaha XS750! Time to load it on the trailer and head back East to PA. A few diags along the way, of course :) Enjoy! Ivan
“Zen and the Art of Carburetor Cleaning.” Too funny. Hope I’m not the only one who got that reference. Congratulations on 100k subscribers, one of my favorite channels.
Thanks for taking such good care of the 79 XS759 triple. I really love that bike. I bought one brand new in 1979 and as I didn't drive cars, it was my daily driver until October 1982 when it suddenly ground to a halt on a 460KM road trip. I had it towed to my girlfriend's apartment garage. I lived in a different city so the bike sat there over winter. In the spring I got my car drivers license so I was in no rush to diagnose and repair the XS750. Life got in the way. In a couple years we got married and built a house so the 750 got moved to the house. Five years later we moved across country and the movers moved the 750 as well. Where it sat in my garage for many more years. Then I had the opportunity for the Community College Motorcycle repair program to use the 750 as a project bike. Within days they told me that the problem was caused by gas leaking into the crankcase and diluting the oil to the point that it caused the engine to seize. (Get rid of those damn vacuum petcocks with no OFF position before they destroy your engine too !!!) They asked if I wanted to source parts and try to fix it. Because of temporary money issues, I (stupidly) said no. And I have regretted that for years. The bike was in almost perfect shape except for the engine and the rusted exhaust pipe. I have never wanted a Mulligan so badly. So thanks again for taking such good care of this beauty. It's a gorgeous design, and there is nothing like it on the road.
Beautiful motorcycle. Makes me think back to the days when I owned multiple motorcycles and automobiles. At that time in my life, I had plenty of time to work on them but nowhere to store them. Now I have room to store them but very little time to work on them.
Good stuff Ivan as usual. RU-vidrs and some viewers seem to think a carb rebuild video is worthless.....today you showed it’s not always an easy fix etc. It’s good to see that even experts run into one off problems like a broken jet stuck in the carb. Have fun on your ride friend and be safe.
I bought mine used a 1978 xs750. She had 10k miles and expired in a fire in our town with 89k miles. After the fire some parts were reusable. I found another one, same model for $250.00 with 11k mileage. Everything was rebuilt to specks. Watching you working on the carbs, you didn't show your viewers the carb syncing with vacuum gauges. This is very important when slowing down to prevent the shot gun effect that will harm the motor. I like the long runs and during hot days you can here knocking going on when you get off a HWY run. The xs850 has the oil cooler on them and the 750 will work too. It's a must have to reach 89k with no problems. She has a full dress, Vetter Windjammer, saddle bags and the large Vetter trunk and King/ Queen seat with back rest. One more note, use the 850 slotted brake disk's, the 750 non-slot's suck.
That bike looks & sounds amazing. I totally agree with taking care of the carbs 1st, as they're usually the worst part on a bike. Besides maybe tank or brakes. Can't wait to see it in motion! 😍🤩
@@CubasAutomotive I think it's supposed to snow tomorrow xD Maybe I'll use the opportunity to mount the new tires and change the oil and diff lube :) Next month my bro is visiting and we're taking the 750s for a mini PA tour!
Ivan, loved that. I once bought a "basket case" 1984 (I think) Honda 750 - New chain - one new carb (out of the 4) - reworked the front shocks - removed the heavy stock exhaust, installed Headers, from a "4 into 2" exhaust system. Was loud - I had to ride with ear plugs. Was Black in color - all of my riding gear was Black. Put on a tiny wind screen. Was a really cool machine. I had to hang on when in 3rd gear at 6 or 7,000 rpm. :-) Loved it. Rode it two years then sold it to a guy who had been begging me to sell it to him. :-) Love the bikes.
Nice Ivan, as soon as this crappy weather goes thru in a couple of days it will be time to ride!! I see your nephew running around in the future with a matel scope " not a sponsor" checking for Lawn mower misfires!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
Those old yamahas are nice, I worked with a guy that drove one just like that to work for years and years. I think his son has it now. It was a 74 I believe and I remember all the guys looking at it when it was brand new. He’s 86 now and he rode it till just a couple of years ago. He rebuilt everything on it at least once, or maybe more!
I'm so frustrated about my " projects"... I don't have a shop, a garage, or even my own driveway. Yet I've got 2 old bikes that haven't run in over 15 years, and 2 cars that have been majorly neglected. Once I come up with some sort of plan, I'll be opening the storage unit for a peak...
. I thought I had owned and paid attention to everything,, but I've never paid much attention to that bike .. but thanks for showing at I think it's nice. It sounds good it sounds like a triple and I can imagine pouring the power on It have a very poor handling 75 XS650 twin I thought was cool I believe that was yamaha's first four stroke on the market.
Dear Ivan, great interesting bike, I did not see the entire video, but I noticed that the tires might need to be changed and I am not sure if I am correct or not, so be careful Bro. when handling these motorbikes and never go speeding. Also, if you can find (barn find) lool or put your hand on an 80s Honda CBX 1300 or Kawasaki KZ 1300 both types with 6 cylinders, Man, you cannot get enough of its super smooth engines and symphonic great sound, Loooooooool, take care and enjoy your time. In late 70s my high school had about 20 guys riding motorcycles to school. Various sizes. Last time I went by there was only one. Insurance cost in Ontario is prohibitive for young guys.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics it is cool it has hi and low and you shift it yourself but no clutch that’s the automatic part of it. So kind of nice putzing around town. You can actually start out in high on flat ground. I think the very first civics or whatever they called there air cooled little car had the same thing.
I really like bikes from this era. Although I haven't been able to buy one yet. I have been searching the market and I found a XS 750 from 1978. I was wondering how hard can it be to maintain them and what about spare parts, are they somewhat available?
That was cool seeing the 3 carb running side by side. Neat fix! Now i am curious to know if you and your brother usually talk in Russian or just English? Lol. That is sweet looking bike and that will be fun to ride!!
Loverly machine, that's a propper motorcycle :-D Beautiful condition too. The carbs and points always needed some love if left to stand for years. Electronic ignition was much better, but a wallet emptier if it had to be replaced :-( C.d.i made a hell of a difference too.
Nice bike! When were the valves last adjusted? Some Yamahas are keen on letting the valves to sink into to the cylinder head and cause zero lash and burn a valve. I recommend adjusting the valves before riding hard.
Ivan, WD-40 does eat away rubbers and plastics, it excells as glue remover and that says a lot. Give it enough time and it will even strip paint. So be careful. The most safe are usually those lubricants that can be used for electronics.
Glenn I’m very close to firing it up. Just missing a few small pieces to get it right (airbox clamps, throwing in a new cam tensioner gasket while it’s apart, some new plugs)
If your headlight is an H4 which it could be you can buy a really good quality LED light bulb for that and they are amazing! I have one on my own bike!! All the best from Canada
Thank you for being a disrespectful a-hole caring only about yourself and blinding everyone else on the road. Your headlight enclosure wasn't designed to accommodate a bulb with such higher lumens output and different pattern. It will therefore never ever provide a proper pattern due to bleeding. There's a reason things are done as they are. Retrofitting things usually never ends up giving decent result and when it comes to lights, claptraps from old housings and newer lamps are quite easily the crappiest of them all.
4.20.21. These bikes are known to have issues with second gear not staying engaged, due to the dogs on the gears being rounded off because of previous owners slamming the gears ramming up to speed❗️
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Not really, the 78-80 XS bikes all had the second gear dog issue. If they are not an issue already it takes moving one washer to the opposite side of the gear to make it lock in better.
Please be decisif when shifting 2 nd gear, the throw is long and if you miss it too often, you loose the 2 nd gear, and than you must go from 1 to 3. .
It might just have something to do with this bike being started for the first time in 5 years. At 5k miles I’m not sure how much valve clearances would change but I suppose that initial break in mileage is when they might
Ivan, Are you sure that those “O” rings are auto fuel tolerant? Don’t want to risk fuel connection degradation and resulting fuel leaks (hopefully initially minor) on the road. Just ask’n.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics ah,young folk, such haste. 😉 swing arm bearings, etc are all running on grease from years ago. Make her happy and at least hit the zirks.
I'm excited to say I ordered a ThinkTool Scan tool, Thanks for the discount. My first scan tool, first use will be ABS diag on 2002 Nissan Frontier and 1998 BMW 328i. Right now watching Indy Day 4 video, all videos are excellent. Been a subscriber since MotoYam days.
How can you do that to a motorcycle with more than 1 carb, without showing you working with the mercury synchronizer????? Eyeballing the carbs don't work.
No sir. Never does eyeballing carbs work perfectly. That i know that as a fact! Eyeball them all day any set. Put the mercury synchronizer on it and it will prove you wrong. Smart tech, I couldn't touch you. Motorcycle carbs, you don't stand a chance. S&S, keeping, and Mikuni i have worked on for longer then you have been alive. It can't be done. Do it right. Use the tool. Teach these kids the right way.
@@richardcoleman9645 The mercury manometers are no longer available. I bought a gauge set for my 4s and I check them by teeing all the gauges into the same vacuum source to verify they read the same.
@@richardcoleman9645 lol if it runs smooth and has good idle and throttle response then I'm happy :) What do you think of toe-in alignment using kite string? Should I get a 100k dollar alignment rack?
This bike already has transistorized ignition. But I hate that people have such a knee jerk reaction to toss out a perfectly good set of points for (oftentimes) janky aftermarket ignition boxes
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics that and it being a triple that routes two cylinders into that right side pipe (the more blown out of the two, yeah I know there’s a crossover, but still)... she’s got some character compared to the typical turbine-smooth 4cyl UJM
I thought the electronic ignition was a later addition. Unless you used a set of balance gauges to set the carb idles I doubt they are even especially after cleaning.
