I bought the small 18mm pancake lens from 7Artisans to see if it was any good for Street Photography.
I put it on my Fujifilm X-E4 and went to Melbourne to shoot the street and cityscapes.
I give you my honest opinion of what this lens is good for, and what it isn't. I also have both colour and black and white photos as samples for you to see.
This is my lens, bought full retail with my money. 7Artisans had no involvement in me having the lens, or any part of the review. These are my thoughts from using my lens.

Really enjoyed your video! I recently bought this lens for my older XE1. Cant wait to use it. Would really love to visit Australia someday- my wife went a few years ago to Melbourne and loved it. Really enjoyed the photo at 7:28. What awesome timing to catch everyone in step with their left foot forward!

I think this would be very good paired with your X-E1. Thanks for your comments, make a vid of your use of the lens :)

Great video and images. I bought mine a year ago, it is glued to my Olympus E-P1 for street work.

Great images ! I was just about to order one of those 3d printed lenses that use a disposable camera lens until I saw this ! Pair with a suitable film recipe on my XT30 shoulder be perfect! Can’t wait to receive it now 👍

I've been using the v1 of that lens on a Panasonic GX800 mini micro four thirds body. I painted out the Roman Numerals with some black satin enamel and it was good to go. There is no focus adjustment on the first version, so it its only about how fast you can draw. Off the camera IQ is for sure modest, I let the iso run wild to mitigate the slow aperture and reel in some soft, noisy, low resolution images. That said, i'm amazed what can be recovered from the raw files using an AI package (ON1 in this case), which destroys the noise and puts detail back into the images. You can never make the corners look sharp, but for quick draw, get the moment photography it doesn't do too bad.

That was really helpful, especially as I also own the X-E4 and similarly didn't warm to the X100 (first iteration) either. I love the 28mm (equivalent) focal length, but found the XF 18mm f/2 mediocre when I combined mine with an X-Pro1. I find it quite extraordinary that Fuji hasn't seen fit to update the f/2 because the form factor is perfect for this 'rangefinder' style of camera. But we seem to be in a minority group here and I'm even more isolated because my preference is for architecture and seascapes rather than street photography. But enough about me, I thought you squeezed a lot of juice out of this specimen, although as you explained, the noise, flare and lack of colour/contrast was often apparent and f/6.3 is a very limiting factor. Thank you for the video.

I have the first iteration of this lens. I have taken some great street shots with it despite it limitations.

Pikelet lens!! Love the phrase. Seems a bargain against the FUJINON XF18mmF2 R which is over 10 times the price and double the weight. Sounds a great choice for a fun lens.

It's value if you restrict it to Street... the Fuji lens will handle much more :)

@@GregCarrick I think it was Shakespeare who said "All the world is a tradeoff, my dear friends, where we, the mortal souls, must oft make choices most profound. In this realm of lenses and optics, we find ourselves standing at the crossroads, pondering the age-old question: price versus quality versus versatility. As we stand upon this precipice of choice, let us remember that in the world of camera lenses, the tradeoff is an unrelenting companion. Seek the balance that suits your vision and your means, for in the end, it is not the lens alone but the eye behind it that crafts the truest art. To each their own tradeoff, and may your photographs forever tell your unique tale." Of course it could have been Christopher Marlowe, widely recognised as a greater photographic artist than Shakespeare :-)

Ah yes, Shakespeare only used film, he was old fashioned that way. He said numerous things about the perils of photography: "To shoot our not to shoot, that is the question" ‘All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man is too busy changing lenses to get the shot.’ 'The lens doth vignette too much, methinks' 'All that glitters is not glimmer glass' 'A battery, a battery, my kingdom for a battery!' 'What light through f 0.95 breaks?' 'Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and other ponce around with a Leica.' @@96Agent96

Hello. Thank you for the review. It is interesting. I have a question. I am a very beginner. I juste bought a Sony nex F3. There is a 50mm lens with it. It is ok for me, I can play with it and use it for many kind a photography. But it is a little big to put the camera in my pocket. So I look for a small one to make my camera tiny, and keep my 50 mm in my backpack. Is 7Artisans 18mm a good choice in my case? Or can you advise me another one with the same price? Thank you! Hi Raphael, I'm no expert on the Sony system or lenses, never having used any, but if you want a small walk around lens, the TTArtisan 25mm f2 might be better. You'd have to check if they have them with a Sony mount for your Nex. It is also an all manual lens. So the focus and aperture are set by you on the lens itself. No control from the camera body over those two functions. However, it's a lot more capable and versatile than the 7Artisans 18mm. You can see my review of it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-88TredKF2M4.htmlsi=rB-M4pp8mjGERSJX

@@GregCarrick thanks you verymuch for answering me. It sounds much more versatile. I am scared that it will not fit in my jacket pocket anymore. But I will consider it before buying one of them! Txs. PS. Yes, they do it for e Sony mount!
