BRITISH PATHÉ'S STORY
Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.
British Pathé also represents the Reuters historical collection, which includes more than 136,000 items from the news agencies Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932), Empire News Bulletin (1926-1930), British Paramount (1931-1957), and Gaumont British (1934-1959), as well as Visnews content from 1957 to the end of 1984. All footage can be viewed on the British Pathé website. www.britishpat...

Another version of the jet pack was developed a few years ago and while it worked perfectly indoors it was highly susceptible to wind currents and they tended to try to fly close to the ground because there was no safety mechanism for the flyer if the engine cut out at 200 feet. So it looked good, but was not practical.

It is always interesting to think of people's misguided thoughts on how to use a new invention. For instance, The telephone was first viewed as a "voice telegraph," and "idle chatter" was discouraged since they thought of it as a business-only device. Other odd ideas included using Television during World War II to guide bombs or (in the US) thinking of a 1939 RCA "home fax machine" where the user would set it to receive a newspaper facsimile from midnight to 6am. [They forgot to consider that it was a lot cheaper to have a normal newspaper delivered rather paying hundreds of dollars for a machine to give you a poor copy. And let us not forget that "someday, everyone will have a helicopter in their driveway." [I sure would hate to live in LA or London if that were so -- crash, the traffic!!] Just look in old copies of Popular Science or Popular Mechanix to see how we saw the future....

They had imaginations back then. They also knew a whole lot less and that made them more experimental, which is how so many past inventions were discovered accidentally. Most tragic thing about modern times is the message young people get. "Everything is done, there's nothing left for you to do, learn to code or go sit in the corner." If you have an idea for an invention you follow it through because those big companies that think they know it all, they're terrified of you.

On the last entry: The Jet-Man rig is probably the closest thing we will ever get to a real Rocketeer-rig. Look it up on youtube and see the most awesome personal flying device I have ever witnessed. And I suspect that DARPA already has a prototype working with both mounted weapons and ground-take-off capabilities for under-the radar insertions and extractions. And lastly: I want both the dynasphere's and zeppelins to come back as normal transportation devices.

The actual reason that jet packs were abandoned as viable is that they could only carry enough fuel for a flight of 2-3 minutes. The reasons given here for abandonment are totally fallacious. Land yachting is still a thriving sport and pastime. Airships are making a big comeback and I have to admit that the description does make this point about many of these items.
