Breathless was one of the defining games of my childhood. It’s very difficult when using a gamepad due to how limiting it can be to strafe and look around, but if you play the mouse-enabled version it becomes far, far easier - it’s like night and day. It also has an incredible soundtrack which I’d rank as one of the best on the Amiga.

I can remember that era when the Amiga had a lot of FPS clones. First demo was Fears on Amiga User Magazine if I remember rightly? Thought Alien Breed 3D and Gloom were the best ones on stock Amiga's for level design and gameplay. Breathless was technically very impressive. Trick or Treat was a lot of fun taking the Legends of Valour engine and using it for a 2 player FPS with two wizards. Citadel/Cyatdela running on a basic 500 was impressive too. Fears having a map editor was a nice inclusion. It's a shame Genetic Species came out later, deserved more praise.

Breathless was always my favorite Amiga FPS by a wide margin. It had speed, atmosphere, 4 worlds with different enemies for each one, a killer fog effect, a fantastic OST, and best of all, a Doom-grade engine, meaning you had different height levels, with stairs, elevators, and so on. This is very important for creating an interesting and immersive environment. Most Amiga FPS games, including the beautiful Genetic Species, had flat Wolfenstein-grade engines, which tends to limit gameplay to corridor-shooters with lots of doors, thus inhibiting the type of run-and-gun play that Doom itself excels in. One drawback of Breathless by comparison with Doom was the flying enemies. They didn't actually fly, they were merely legless sprites, as you could see when they climbed stairs. ;D Breathless also lacked visible weapons, and all the enemies fired projectiles, so there were no hitscanners that could instantly damage you with gunfire. Further, the engine only allowed 90-degree angles, so there was no ability to create curves for more interesting architecture. All that said, it was IMO an amazing game that successfully grafted adventure-game elements into a fantastic FPS. Thanks for the video!

Back in the day with a 1200 and 060 and later RTG was the only way to get realistic smoothness and quality, and therefore playability. Amazing that 500 's could run any of these. When Doom was "ported" it was a novelty because I was used to Amiga FPS, but Doom and Quake weere part of my collection. Quake ran pants even on my set up, but it did run. My all time favourite was Alien Breed 3d2

Fears on the Amiga had very creepy ambient sounds while you play, much more creepy than Doom on the most expensive PC money could buy in 1994 :)

I was fortunate enough to have an A1200 with an 060 and bought Click Boom's official port of Quake which was a lot of fun at the time (And generally considerably better than all the Amiga Doom clones).

Dread - Very impressive, but I'm confused about one thing: When finished, will Dread be a complete game with a set of levels, bosses, a plot, and possibly even cutscenes/transition images, or will it just be an engine with some simple levels as an example, and then it will be up to the community to create levels for it? Back in the 90s, I had two small proof of concept demos for the Amiga that ran reasonably well on my stock A500, and even better with my Supra Turbo 28 (with true Fast RAM). One had you moving around in a dungeon-like level and the other had you in an outdoor type maze. I think the second one was DamageWolf3D2, and I think the first might have just been Wolf3D. Both are on Aminet, but at the moment, I don't have a real Amiga set up and I never configured a virtual hard drive for WinUAE, so I can't test them to see if they're the ones I remember. Unfortunately, nothing ever came of either one as far as I'm aware.

Yes, we are working towards a commercial version of the game with new levels, a plot, bosses e.t.c. As a matter of fact, all current official demos are just tech/proof of concept and most of the assets used are considered placeholders. The final game will feature new sets (we've planned for 3-4 texture themes with their respected levels) and will lean more towards steampunk/lovecraftian style instead of the current 'space marine' one (at least that's the idea, we'll see how this works out). In the mean time we plan to keep supporting and releasing SDKs, featuring current public assets and the latest engine updates, for anyone who wants to create his own custom maps/mods (already there are quite a few of them made btw) 😉

@@johntsakiris3717 Sounds good. :) I was just reminded of some free Windows FPS games I saw in the past, which looked good, but which weren't much more than engines for people to make levels for. Don't get me wrong, I think as many games as possible should allow for users to make their own content, but I also really like to sit down and play a well thought out game with a coherent story and logical level progression. User created levels can be great, but often with FPS games, they don't rise to the level of a full campaign. Much of the time, they're either single levels, or a series of similar levels, but with nothing really tying them together. To be clear, I don't expect every game to be another Half-Life, Jedi Knight, or Thief Gold (three of my favorite FPS games), but a basic story, and one level logically leading into the next is always appreciated. :)

Not sure how you've managed to make Breathless run like that on the a500 mini. The enemies aren't supposed to move that fast, but the game itself isn't running faster than it should besides that. Alienbreed3d 2 should also be running much, much smoother. I strongly recommend learning to configure the system. It can make a world of difference. Appears you're barely scratching the surface of what can be achieved when its configured properly. AB3d2 can run about 10x as well and things like Gloom deluxe can be run faster and smoother at 1024x768 then how you have it running at about %10 of that resolution (320x256 by the look of it). As for Dread, it's a nice technical achievement, but I dont like the visuals, the enemies or sound. The game itself looks kind of boring and generic.

"Dread" looks quite jerky in this video. I'm sure I saw it running a lot smoother on the Amiga in other demo videos - am I getting something wrong here?

Make sure you're watching it on real hardware or accurate emulation set to the correct frame rate. Amiga Mini is hundreds of times more powerful than a real Amiga and of course a PC can run games multiple times faster.

Ok, as an old Amiga fan turned pc master race I have played Almost every old fps game on pc as there are my favourite games and I have to say all them look and sound absolute crap except genetic species, in fact I was about to turn it off till I saw that game, I was actually impressed with it, it’s i game I would spent time playing. Bravo, bravo

What killed the Amiga for these type of games was the cost of accelerators. I mean, PC owners would spend $150 and up for a fast VGA card to upgrade their machines in the mid 90's. But for the Amiga, you needed an 030 accelerator at least and some FAST RAM for that level of performance, and in the mid 90s, those started at $400... Loved my Amiga, but never got an accelerator for it back in the day. If I could have gotten an 030 (even in the 25-30 Mhz range) with 2M Fast RAM for $200 or less, I probably would have done that... When I started getting into PCs, yeah I upgraded the CPU for $100+ and then the VGA card for $150+, but I was able to do that in those smaller bites. I just couldn't afford the larger chunk needed to try to keep the Amiga in time. Too bad, because I love my current A1200 with it's 28Mhz 030 and extra RAM. It even runs DoomAttack acceptably, meaning over 10FPS. I would have been happy with that in 95. ;-)

Back then, I had gotten a fully populated Supra 8MB RAM expander in a deal I bought from someone. I later got a Supra Turbo 28 accelerator, which had a 28Mhz 28000 chip. It gave me a nice speed boost while being 100% compatible. In fact, I can't recall ever having to toggle it off to get anything to run. I'm not sure what it would have done for FPS games (I never had any), but it improved the hell out of Wing Commander.
