Brilliant!! For me it’s switching between audio, digital and physical. The palette cleansers are key and I love to mix up genres. But for me it’s recognizing my mood. I had to put down Live Ship Traders because the trauma of the characters was too much for me at that moment. Reading multiple books at a time is easier if you read different genres!

Oh my goodness these suggestions will really help me! I don’t know how people read 100+ books a year and feel like a slacker coming in at 1 per week. I love #5 - when necessary, it’s ok to skim over some paragraphs! I put so much pressure on myself to read and understand EVERY sentence that it can slow me down. What am I thinking?! I don’t have a photographic memory so why am I putting that pressure on myself?! I only read on a kindle and I found turning off the page numbers has also REALLY helped (“oh no I only read 30 pages tonight?”). Now I don’t know what page I’m on! 😁 Great video!

You are absolutely right!! I also started removing the pages from the view on my kindle and it has both really helped me out to stress less and to enjoy more as I am not thinking "agh i still need to read 30 pages more tonight" - i read what I feel like!! Thank you so much for watching the video!! I really appreciate it you saying it will really help you! and yes!!! support for the DNF!!!

Great list! I'm new to this whole Booktube thing, but I can definitely see how these are bad habits that many big readers (not just Booktubers) avoid. Particularly the carrying on with a book you don't love and gorging yourself on one giant series in one go. The one I think that even big readers/Booktubers need to watch out for is the re-reading one. So much of the joy of reading comes from coming back to a book after some time away, but too many people still have the mentality of, "there's so many books, I can't waste time re-reading the ones I've already read." That approach turns reading into some sort of strange BINGO game where your goal is to check as many boxes as possible, rather than appreciating the work. And especially on social media where the number of books you read is sometimes worn as some sort of badge of honour, it can be tempting to just continue to blow through new books and never revisit your favourites. Also, I wanted to mention, I really appreciate the effort you put into your editing, even if it's subtle. The different zooms, the change in colour tone, and the B-roll all make your videos really engaging. Thanks again!

I realized #6 was helpful for me this year! The trick to not mixing stories in my mind is to read books that are not of the same subgenre at any given time, such as two classic epic fantasies.

third video of your's I have watched in a row and I just love your content! This video had so many great points, and as a new book tuber I am learning how to create better reading habits. many of these I find myself doing and a few like - being okay with rereading, and finding other formats to consume literature are ones I need to get better at. Audiobooks and Ebooks have never been a favorite of mine and still aren't but I have found a few with narrators I enjoy, also I am learning the convenience of them with traveling for work and being on the go a lot.

Really nice tips. I started applying this a week ago, and let’s just say i never read many books that fast before! One more tip: stop hesitating, make it simple, if you want to read the book then read it, and start right away, read the chapters continuously and then stop when your tired, don’t even force yourself to finish reading the chapter you’re in, just read as long as your enjoying and stop when you are not even if that is mid chapter.. And don’t plan too much

I never read just one book. I honestly cannot recall the last time I did that. I generally have 3-4 books plus 2-6 fanfics on the go at one time. That actually helps with your first few points as well, because if I start feeling bored or overwhelmed, I just switch books. I definitely have no problem dnf-ing if I'm just not into it, though.

I agree!! Honestly, I've never had any problems with DNF books but I'm afraid to read more books than one. I just think I'm not good at making decisions so I'd spend more hours choosing the book I want to read than reading. Personally I love searching for some quotes of the book!! They gave me the hype to get into the story with not too many spoilers and without having too much expectations.
@FunFantasyBooks
@FunFantasyBooks 11 месяцев назад
Uhh what a lovely idea! I get hyped by looking at the art and the aesthetics of the book - will definitely add to my list searching for quotes!! Yeah, it is very personal- maybe just books that sound intriguing to you - and when you feel like you are burning out or not feeling it, then you can go and pick up another! (but yeah, it also takes me so long to decide!)

Great video, I think without goodreads I would go into analysis paralysis every time I had to choose a new book to read, so def can relate to that. I guess I should try reading more than one book at once, as from time to time I get stuck reading longer titles, even when I like them.

Very good advice. Especially skimming the "filler" parts and DNF'ing some books. (You may feel like finishing some of them later). I often read 3 or 4 books at once, until one of them grabs me and holds me to the end. 😃

Jeez, way to call me out! Alternating heavier books with more lighthearted ones definitely helped me a lot, and switching subgenres is a great way to make each book stay with me more, because there's less risk that I would mix up some element of one plot or the other when I think back on it. One other thing I've been trying to do more this year is "hyping" myself up by checking out fanart, enthusiastic reviews etc, especially when I'm reading a book I should love on paper but I'm having trouble connecting with. It's not much help for quantity, but it's great for quality!
@FunFantasyBooks
@FunFantasyBooks 11 месяцев назад
hahaha, well, I am not perfect at this either! And you are pretty solid!! I also do the fan art for hyping myself, although I tend to stay away from reviews before hand because I get very easily excited and then I will set incredibly high expectations (which usually are very hard to meet!). Generic comments, yes, but details... no! BUT i love to get into the reviews afterwards, I can spend hours reading both the 5-star and 1-star reviews, it is so much fun!

#1 depends on the author. King is known for bad starts in a book as its more about world building so more often than not it gets good towards the middle/end

Hi there. Thanks for another great video. One habit that I am currently doing right now in fact is after I got finished with listening to the final Empire Mistborn I switched gears and started listening and reading the standalone ruination by Anthony Reynolds. That has been really good. Also while I'm working on those I have also switched gears and started reading while listening to a really short light novel. I'm currently working on the light novel series Fullmetal Panic which has been awesome. Also, I have found that there are books that I definitely regret getting so I've been switching gears and have started using an audio library that I'm a member of just in case if I'm unsure about the book that I've been recommended. One bad habit I have too is that I tend to want to try out lots of different books from booktube that I hear that are popular so that I can know and get connected to people better over books that are popular. Just so that I can be in the know which I know is not the greatest habit to have.
@FunFantasyBooks
@FunFantasyBooks 11 месяцев назад
Hiya! It definitely sounds as if you are already killing it with your reading strategy! Congrats!👏!! Ohh and about Ruination- do you recommend? I've been wanting to read it for such a long time!
@clarkkentnaruto4322
@clarkkentnaruto4322 11 месяцев назад
@@FunFantasyBooks Thank you, and yes Ruination has been pretty captivating. The best part is that the audiobook includes a full cast, which makes the book come alive like a movie in your mind. It's not too descriptive, or at last it describes things and characters enough so that in a matter of seconds, you will recognize who is coming into the room.

Before I say anything else I wanna SORRY FOR THE LONG COMMENT BUT THIS VIDEO HELPED ME SOOOO MUCH BECAAAAUUUSE (very important) that Im an Autistic ADHD Dyslexic bookworm. Very important cause this make reading, as much as I love it, VERY difficult and SLOW. - The first tip alone I REALLY need to adapt. I'm autistic and NOT finishing a task is HELL for me. I feel VERY ashamed when I put down a book that Im just not feeling at the moment. For example i was VERY disappointed at The Queens Gambit. Usually "The Books are better" but TQG was a terrible drag, never finished it and after 2 years itsSTILL on my mind that "I gotta finish it SOME day" Same goes for Tahere Mafi's "An Emotion Of Great Delight" I didnt dislike it but I didnt feel a real connection. It felt like I was reading it to someone who loved the story but couldnt read, so I was reading it but it didnt do anything for me. ?The last book this happened with was Stephen King's Fairy Tale. it took me 4 months to read 166 pages. Now my best friend recommended the Percy Jackson series and Im in the 3rd of 5 books on page 122. ITs very dyslexic friendly but most importantly I really love the story so far which makes you WANNA read so as difficult as it can be to stop yourself cause of your time already invested, youre RIGHT! - the 2nd tip is GENIUS. When I started my reading youngey MANY years ago my dad gifted me the Potter series but afte rthat I didnt know what to read. Someone gifted me (im poor, im on disability) a BUNCH of Stephen King and Lord Of The Rings and LOTR is hell for dyslexic people but youre RIGHT, as much as I love Stephen King, they're thick looong dragging books which DONT give you the feeling of succeeding AT ALL, me specially being ADHD, I need that "success dopamine hit" so imagine a dyslexic person ONLY reading 3 stephen king books in 1.5 years. you dont see that you read 3 books between 700 and 1000 pages. You see ONLY 33 items you finished in 18 months, always made me feel like a failure. - The 3rd tip Im accidentally soing right now. Im reading Percy Jackson and Im having sooooo much fun and after that Im going for The Kane Chronicles which is 3 books so you only read 2 stories, 2 series BUT you read 8 books in total. SMART!! - The 4th I sadly cant do due to my Autism and ADHD, I need to hyper focus or I make mistakes/cause accidents. IF I gotta focus on an audiobook while walking somewhere I cant fully focus on traffic. IF I listne to an audiobook in bed, Ill fall asleep and miss half the story haha or I cant sleep cause the story is too good haha. I love how you said "This isnt for everyone" - the 5th I sadly cant do cause Im autistic and am VERY literal and not even read "word for word"but literally "letter for letter" but for non dyslexic folks I can understand how this would work. - The 6th I cant do either (dang it haha) Example: After Percy ?Jackson I wanna read a short horror story (haunting of Hill House) to see if my reading skills have improved. but I still have 2.5 Percy Jackson books to go and Im already a TINY bit distracted in my head cause Im so exited. Now as an autistic person its IMPOSSIBLE for me to make decisions, my social worker (with my permission) does that for me. IF I were to read 2 books at the same time, not only would I constantly be thinking "which one would I red today?" but also in the back of my head Id constantly be thinking ""I wonder what'll happen next in the other book"and I'd constnatly lose focus. but AGAIN, for other folks this might indeed be a good tip. - The 7th YES GoodReads, its sooooo satisfying to update your reading progress. however reviews DONT work for me, I have a unqiue tast, same with TV and 9/10 I disagree ith people. IVe lerned to ignore reviews and just judge for myself cause taste is SUPER personal. - The 8th YES I agree but I wont do it. Simply because Im dyslexic and reading takes me so much longer, I could invest that time in a new story so while I agree. Samewith movies actually. Go re-watch your favorite childhood movies as an adult, youll totally watch it with a different POV which is so interesting. wish I wasnt dyslexic and SLOW so I could do it, or example with Harry Potter or Stephen King. IVe actually REALLY wanted to re-read Stephen King's IT and Stephen King's The Stand for example Thank you sooooo much for this SUPER helpful video. Great tips, will share this video so hopefully other folks can benefit from this too

Having a stack of current reads was one of the best changes I made in my reading! My main reason for spacing out books from the same series is actually that it helps me remember what happens a lot more hahaha 😂 If I read them back to back I'm just somehow so absorbed that by the time I finish I have no idea what happened. At the start of this year I also started to make sure I have different genres on my TBR and adjusting my book buying accordingly! Are you planning on reading The Art of Prophecy soon? Or was it just a coincidence that you talked about TBRs in that clip? 😂

I normally have a few books on the go at any one time. Generally, I'll have one paperback and about 3 books ebooks on the go at once. The way I know a book is a 5 star read for me is if I stop reading everything else until I finish that one book! I can't skim and have to read every word. I get it's a good way of reading more quickly. But it's not for me. I don't want to read quickly, it's not important to me. I want a book to take me into a new world and be a totally immersive experience!
@FunFantasyBooks
@FunFantasyBooks 11 месяцев назад
Totally understand!! Skimming is of course a good way of reading faster, but in this case I wanted to state that it can also be a tool to decide if a certain part or paragraph is worth your energy. There are some books that for me where somewhat slow / I didn't find myself in the mood and skimming some paragraphs allowed me to get back to love the book!! PRO mode having those 4 books ready to go!!

Sometimes percevering with a book might pay off. Technically I did dnf Malice initially but went back to it and liked it a lot more 2nd time around. If a whole series is out I do tend to read that series unless there's more than 5 books. I'm not sure about those who only buy books when the whole series has been finished, it doesn't matter so much to well established authors but might to struggling new authors. I read physical books and use Audible these days as I can carry on listening while my hands are busy or I'm out walking. I don't think they're necessarily bad habits but more that some habits suit some people more than others
@FunFantasyBooks
@FunFantasyBooks 11 месяцев назад
Yeah! Definitely can agree to that! Reading is very subjective, and each and every one of us have a different life / habits. The main point for me here is basically trying to detach the will of reading from a specific book and keeping that "need/willingness" to read constantly fed by different books! If what you want in that moment is to keep reading and not DNF'ing even if it's hard, that it's alright - same as to go super deep into a series. These are more ideas to take into consideration! Thank you for sharing your points Joe!!

Hi Isa how are you, While I agree on the point of breaking up a series to keep things fresh, the downside if one leaves to long a gap you start forgetting things. It happened to me while reading Malazian Book of the Fallen I lost track of characters motivations etc. You cant exactly re-read that series it will take forever. I often change up things a lot even going into horror and even thrillers (Blake Crouch started off as a thriller writer). Personally I try avoid reading multiple books at once, although of late I have been doing it due to unforunate complicated reasons

I try and have between two or three books on my active reading “shelf” at one time. I try to make them different genres so the don’t get mixed up in my mind. A cozy mystery/romance, historical fiction, and a non-fiction or fantasy will do the trick. Reading three romances together can get boring or very confusing. Is Betty dating, John..Michael..or Jay? Well then, who is Sarah dating? And what is the third romantic female’s name? 1) An audiobook that I can read while driving. It cuts down on road rage! Any genre is fine, but a light/funny read is best for the car. You don’t want to be crying while driving. 2) Books two and three need to be different genres from book one. About the only genres I don’t like are horror/thrillers. But I recommend each book be different. 3) At least one of my books has to fit my current mood. And I never know when my mood is going to change. If I pick-up a beloved book in a favorite series and the first couple of paragraphs do not excite me, I put that book back in the “bull pen” and start something completely different. I did that three times with one particular book this summer. When I finally read it I gave it 5 stars. Mood is everything in my reading life.
@FunFantasyBooks
@FunFantasyBooks 11 месяцев назад
Ahh, you are an expert then!! I am also a mood reader, so keeping options open and knowing what I might feel like reading is key to keep my reading habits! hahaha I started laughing out load with the description of Betty dating potentially John, Michael and Jay! Lmaao!
