Electric cars are starting to take up more and more of the automotive market, in 2019 around 2.9 million Electric vehicles were registered. Because level 1 charging from ordinary household outlets is too slow, Many electric car owners need level 2 charging stations that quickly recharge their battery from 240V outlets like the ones used for an electric dryer or over. These home charging stations allow for faster charging speed and work with all production electric cars because they utilize the industry-standard J1772 charging protocol. Here’s a selection of the best home charging stations on the market based on price, consumer reviews from a variety of sources, and manufacturer reputation.

Some of these are portable, but most are hardwired. The nice thing about the non-hardwired ones is that if you're going to a friend's house you can take it with you and plug it into their dryer outlet to get some miles back fairly quickly. There are even ones that have two 120v plugs that you plug into two separate circuit outlets to get 240v @16A. That way you don't have to unplug someone's dryer...

@FelsNaptha 2 года назад
Good idea, are there any brands you can recommend, the two separate 120 v plugs sounds ideal.
@nc3826
@nc3826 2 года назад
@@FelsNaptha The 2, 120v receptacles have to be out of phases (ie be connect to different hot bus bar leads in the breaker or fuse box) for it to result in a 240v circuit.... if they are not it will remain a 120v circuit instead of being a 240v circuit, which could be dangerous to use... The good news is there are ways to test it.... and a combiner receptacle box can be used, so a normal L2 240v EVSE can be used... The other issue is that the closest 2 compatible 120v receptacles maybe far apart from each other or the EV.... So testing should be done 1st... To determine how practical of an option, it is?

I’m trying to get an education here. If I understand correctly the higher the amperage units will charge faster? Also if commercial chargers charge faster at DC then I guess all level 2 home units charge at AC ? I would assume then the DC is faster because it doesn’t go through the car’s converter?

Hi Guys, Hope "WALMART" soon sees the advantage of having say 6x EV Charge Stations near front door of every USA Store! It is perfect blend~ Shopper now has a hour or more to shop inside!

Walmart has a deal with Electrify America, an EV fast charging network, to install fast charging units at Walmart locations. Not sure on exact numbers, but as of April this year Electrify America already has more than 600 Charging Stations installed with more than 2,000 individual chargers in operation, this includes lots of Walmarts, Targets and other big box retailers.

In what reality do walmart shoppers have the money for ev ? I thought they all insested with their family, watched Nascar with a burn barrel in the back. The amount of trash that walmart sells, they could save the planet more if they just shopped responsible.

Do any of these chargers have the option to charge on solar surplus power (like the MyEnergi Zappi sold in Europe)? Otherwise somebody should create such an option for the US market or get MyEnergi to build a US compatible version.
@nc3826
@nc3826 2 года назад
NA dcbel 16 goes far beyond, what the MyEnergi Zappi can offer.... fwiw the MyEnergi Zappi is way too costly, for just an EVSE, even with a seldom needed trick.... and it uses the wrong plug (i.e a type 2) anyway,... Mate...

Non of the devices shown are actual "Car Chargers" they are power supplies using the J1772 plug system allows for a "Handshake" between the cars on board charger (This is what charges the battery) and the power being supplied.The units supply single phase one wire 120v or single phase 2 x 120v = 240v and a low voltage pilot signal to identify, monitor and control the input. The big fear from the manufacturers would be someone unplugging the power cord while the car is charging at a high rate this could cause some damage to the electronics.

Nice video. I just started putting together on what level 2 charger I want to buy. I need to upgrade one of the 16amps chargers that I use for my Volt and get 32 amps for our new Bolt. My experience with the Voltec charger has not great with them blowing a solder on fuse and pain to fix.

A little dated as some models don't appear to be available anymore, maybe an update to this review is necessary. However well presented and provided me some brands to research further and see what they had available currently.

I’ve been using the chargers that came with my 2 electric cars. They work fine. I adapted them to take 240, but found that 120v does fine. I just charge a couple of times per week. No big deal. Free.

I just bought an EV. I have a 110v outlet in my garage. Takes forever to charge. I’ve been reading that the car will charge faster if I have 220v outlet. I’m getting it changed to 220v. Do I need a new charger or can I use the one that I currently use for the 110
@keithnewton8981
@keithnewton8981 2 года назад
Level one charging is 240v on 13 amp which is 3.1kw Level two 240v on 32 am 7.6kw But this will depend on your car so most cars with 50kw battery pack or less have a internal charge rate 3.5 kw/h so you car will only pull 3.5kw Hyundia kona 64kw has a max ac charge of 11kw so if you had a 12kw charge unit it could charge any more than 11. No a blink would not be 6x fasterb level 1 240v is 3kw/h Blink box 20 x240 ÷1000 =4.8 kw very little improve over a plug in the wall

how much does it cost per month if I charge my car every other day for a month?
@jackjoyce1744
@jackjoyce1744 3 года назад
Jahmirieon Johnson, that will depend on your electric company. Here in the UK it is about 13p per kWh. So you multiply the cost per kWh with the battery size of your vehicle for example a Tesla model S 100D will cost about £13 every night with the average electricity cost. All this will change with energy suppliers, renewable resources etc.

Is there TESLA to Type 2 converter for my Nissan Leaf
@Josiahsutton1
@Josiahsutton1 2 года назад
Yes there are Tesla to j1772 adapters available online. They only work with level 2 tesla charging stations such as the ones people have in their garage. They will not work with superchargers. Whether it will work with a level 1 I'm not sure but I can't imagine a reason that someone would attempt to use a level 1 Tesla charger with a Nissan leaf.
@rebeccajean1309
@rebeccajean1309 3 года назад
Every LEAF comes with a charger. Not sure about other models. Its a ripoff but no way out of it. Unless the cord is stolen, you just need a driyer plug installed and use you current inverter cord but it is easier on the car batteries to use level one if you can. Only use level 2 if its free (like at work or a free public chargepoint site). It is not recommended to use level 3 if you want to keep your battery healthy.

I just checked the price of the new chargepoint charger. It is $1,296.00! This is double the price of the other chargers. I think they have priced themselves out of the market, since they don't offer twice the features or value of the other chargers. I am going to cross this off my list of possibles.

While troubleshooting the installation of my ChargePoint Home Flex, found out the WiFi passphrase should not contain any special characters. Once I changed the passphrase, the ChargePoint WiFi worked. Made a few calls to ChargePoint support. Their internal documentation mentions the limitation but there in no customer facing information on this.

Most RVs do come with a EVSE charging unit when you buy the car. Many drivers choose to keep the unit provided in their car as a backup and then buy a second charger to install at their home.
