8 Best reasons to retire early in Guatemala! It's just right next door! This was definitely one of of the countries that had to fall on our list of places to retire to. It was probably among the most affordable in Central and South America and has lots to offer as well! Check out my video on retiring early in Guatemala!

@@tommyg.9069 I SAILED into the Rio Dulce on our sailboat with my mate. Our plan was to head up to MX for the hurricane season... Never made it. rented a room in a house in Antigua fell in love with the town and people. Eventually sailed back to Fla sold the boat moved here fulltime 2004 bought a house renovated and expanded it.

@@latinaalma1947 You're more handy than me. I could never renovate a house.
@latinaalma1947
@latinaalma1947 Год назад
@@tommyg.9069 Didnt do it all by myself...hired a local construction team...took down walls that chopped up the house into tiny bedrooms..opened exterior walls to make enormous Moroccan arched windows to let in light and the volcano views...it sits on the side of a dormant volcano overlookimg two others, one active, spewing fire and lava periodically, a safe distance away...the views are spectacular. I did all the art work inside...designed on paper and laid out mosaics on floors , walls, and exterior wall arches. I hand painted and fired tiles. Painted large wall murals . Lots of paint decorations very intricate because I am a hobby artist and decorative painter. This was the dream of a lifetime, an enormous project that took years because I lived in it, in the mess moving from room to room. Very few people are wacko enough to do this. I came from the boat, another enormous project. My mate pretty much gutted the boat and installed all new systems...it was a 25 yo boat...when done it was far more comfortable and seaworthy 45ft....we owned nothing but tshirts, shorts, bathing suits and boat shoes. We were used to living FOR nature and just continued that lifestyle here. I have always marched to a different drummer...most women could not take either lifestyle. Lots of men couldnt either. There are sacrifices on a boat incommunicado for long stretches of time, you have to be self reliant, like pioneers. The ocean doesnt care if you live or die and the Coast Guard isnt just a radio call away...living in a Central American paradise can be heaven or it can be hell...all of life is what WE bring to it...people have too little faith in themselves. But mostly they just dont want to bother, they want an easy life...easy or interesting, that seems to me to be the choice and from childhood I had an adventurous spirit and mind. I was lucky enough to find a man like me...he had the sailing dream from childhood. I had the south of the border life dream from my Texas childhood and Mexican vacations/adventures. One thing is for certain: I feel like my life was WELL used...I crammed alot in, I got to do everything I had ever dreamed of....I got to go everyplace I wanted most to see. From a life in the country in Texas...I KNEW I didnt want to marry a rice farmer and put up preserves...though those are noble callings and I HAVE put up preserves here from my tropical fruit trees... I needed much much MORE in terms of experiences.

I've been living in Guatemala for 8 months now. Your comments are on point. I agree with your comments of spending a few months here before you make your final decision. It's wonderful to have the option of traveling back and forth to the US and back. Living here is like living a National Geographic adventure every day. I love it!

I live just outside Ciudad Vieja bought an existing simple home on a large lot walled garden...my builder husband expanded and upgraded the home beautifully using inexpensive local labor...so much fun doing it...in 15 yrs have paid for,it in saved rental costs...under 100USD property taxes. We bought a new vehicle 15 yrs ago, have a great local mechanic. CV has two grocery stores so rarely shop for,food in Antigua anymore...our dr, dentist, lab and pharmacy are in Antigua , our pharmacy delivers free. It is a gorgeous, happy life in a good climate..we have two fullltime employees to garden, do home maintenance, all cleaning, food shopping, chauffer us, and cook much of what we eat using MY recipes. We live like US multimillionaires on just out two,SS checks...I mean what is not to love? We vacation in the best hotels in Monterrico, Pacific beach two hours away, at Lake Atitlan three hours away. Good restaurants around in Antigua and we have MANY expat friends from the world over and local friends too...

When we moved here nearly twenty years ago we bemoaned the fact we had not come ten or twentynyears before when expat gringos snapped up Colonial homes relatively cheaply. Many had discoveredmGuatemala when stationed here with the US Embassy and also,working for Federal aid programs like USAID. The people who came when we did found most places in town were already commercial properties, stores, restaurants, and hotels,took up most of the resl,estatwe. Some local families still live in the BACK of these properties. Fewer and fewer each year. In town condominiums cost double what they do in surrounding towns. Yes rent for a LONG time before you buy. Rent in various surrounding towns to see which you like best and which met your budget. You can get double the house in many of the towns as in Antigua. Buying property you are competing against Guatemala City residents who want vacation and week end homes in Antogua and the area. My neighborhood has half vacation homes for Guatemalans, PrivatemGuatemalan doctors we use have been BETTER than US doctors we have had. My husband in his second career was an oncology and emergency RN so he is a good judge of doctors medical skills. Our g.p., dermatologist, and opthamologist fees are low but rising at a greater rate than local inflation. So e dentists area reasonable others trained in the ISA and Europe charge 2/3 US prices so doctors are better bargain than these dentists esp for procedures. For some specialties you must go to the capital. One thng different from US hospitals is a private hospital can KEEP you until you pay your bill! AMericans find this surprisi g as it is almost false imprisonment. I know a Guatemalan who was held for many days u til his family got together the money to pay the bill from various family members. THe lrivate for protfit hospital Hernano Pedro Privado across from the mercado has high prices and some tourists have been caught off guard at the bills, esp tourists who have to make financial arragements to pay in full before discharge.

Having lived in Colombia for the last 15 years on less than $350 USD a month, (note I am fairly sure that most expats would not live as I live, more like a Colombian than a gringo), I like the sound of a change to Guatemala. Your video seemed very informative and I am looking forward to the end of 2021 being there. Looking at a possibility of Melchor de Mencos along the Belize border to start. That way the visa runs are extremely easy. After 15 years here my Spanish is okay but the Mayan dialects may pose a bit of a challenge, but I love a challenge. If you have any information on Melchor de Mencos I would be happy to learn all I can before the move. Thanks again, good video.

It really really is. The people are amazing....mostly kind, polite, happy, tranquil people who love their families and show it. The form of Spanish is old fashioned courtly polite. You will never hear cursing in the street or in earshot of a woman, child or elderly person, unlike Mexico. There are so many great places to explore in nature here all around Lake Atitlan, the Rio Dulce, Coban, Semuc CHAMPEY,the Pacific beaches.In our 50s and early 60s we did it all by bus in budget hotels , backpacking...it was cheap, fun and fabulous nature! SInce our 60s we have owned a van traveling in it. Not fit for climbing, long hikes etc anymore due to age so we stay in very nice hotels with comfortable beds...STILL great fun!

Sorry to be critical because this was an enjoyable video. It's OK to mispronounce place names and even spell them wrongly (Ciudad Vieja not Cuidad Vieja). It's just that if you're actually making an information video for people and publishing it on the internet I kind of expect you to do a bit more research. Such as - 'I'm not sure how to say this so I'll just find out before I put it on my video' rather than 'I'm not sure how to say this so I'll just have a wild guess'. It doesn't inspire confidence.

Thanks for sharing. Is so rich and beautiful the United Kingdom of Guatemala established since 1609 and that extends from El Soconusco (today Chiapas) to part of Panama. Guatemala is 12th producer of silver in the world and 20th producer of gold besides having massive reserves of nickel, jade and so many other natural resources too bad for almost a century big foreign multinational corporations have been taking almost everything. The Malvinas belong to Argentina, The Esequibo belongs to Venezuela and Belice belongs to Guatemala. God bless

I am Guatemalan American and have lived both in Guatemala and in Washington State, Utah and California. If you visit for a week or stay for a month you will be able to make a better decision than just checking online or reading. Unless you live in Louisiana, Mississippi Alabama, some parts of Texas and Arizona and New Mexico (weather, nature, affordability, amenities etc) Guatemala is very hard to beat in all counts (it is incredibly beautiful, relaxed and good vibes culture, lots to do, learn and enjoy specially the arts, archeology, sports, fishing, fauna and flora watching, exploring, active volcanos, cloud forest mountains, low lands, deserts, white beaches, black beaches, 500 plus lakes, lagoons, ponds, hundreds of waterfalls, cenotes, caves, canyons, MAYAN RUINS, virgin rivers, virgin jungles two oceans [Caribbean and Pacific] plus de Gulf Of Mexico in Tabasco and Campeche is only a few hours from the Peten Border and Chiapas also borders Guatemala; and all these seas are within a day's drive, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador are only a few hours away also, active volcanos, best drinks in the world, music, gastronomy, history, culture, the Mayans invented Chocolate, Chewing Gum, Corn, grew Avocados and chillies before anyone in the world, Guatemala grows some of the best coffee and tropical feuits and vegetables in the world which you will get fresh every day, ancient traditions etc etc etc, too much fun for a retired person; I will be exciting and enticing every day and every where you look) Most expats in Guatemala (from all over the world) only were there to visit but decided to stay after experiencing all these benefits I mentioned. Being just a few hours away from the USA, having a very USA friendly and cross over culture (there are 3 million Guatemalans in the USA and the US has been the main commercial partner of Guatemala since the 19th century, as well as most mainstream American franchises and products available (you won't ever miss any American culture, bands, traditions, foods, movies, music etc, Guatemala in many places like Cayala, Zona Viva, 4 grados norte, Antigua, Xela etc HAVE GREAT AMERICAN VIBES AND PRODUCTS. The low prices and affordability are the icing on the cake. Give Guatemala a visit, it may be the best decision in your mature life. I am planning on retiring there also in the near future (I live in the OC, California and I love it here also but Guatemala is hard to beat) ✌️

How much do I need to retire in Guatemala? I’m 20 and want to retire around 30
@roninblue5885
@roninblue5885 4 года назад
@Eros Play. The cost of living would be between 1000-1500USD a month but keep in mind that it isn't in how much you need, it's in how much you could still potentially make even after retirement. I would also add another 5 more years to your estimate to 15 years. If you focus on generating passive and residual income and growing your net worth with compound interest, perhaps in index funds or ETF's, as examples it would be a good position to be in. Simply saving would not be a good path. A good simple guideline to follow would be in figuring out your annual expenses, multiply it by 25, this will give you a rough idea in how much you may need and compare this to Guatemala's cost of living. Once you know your lump sum, you could live off 4% of it annually, this will roughly take you 15 years to achieve. I know by experience, it took me 17 years. I wish I knew what I just told you back at your age...
