Hi, my name is Samy and I am a long-time partner of RoninBlue. It is with great sadness that I announce RoninBlue’s sudden passing of a heart attack on Monday, August 16, 2021. RoninBlue was passionate about personal finance and early retirement and loved sharing his knowledge with all of you on RU-vid. RoninBlue has put a lot of love and energy into making these videos and I would like to thank each and every one of you for sharing in his joy and for supporting his channel up to now. I am a Bulgarian who has left my home country in search of a better life abroad. Well, I found a better life in terms of paychecks, medical service, and social security. But I lost a lot in terms of socializing. I miss my friends. It is so difficult to befriend a Westerner. Thank God, I have my family beside me otherwise life would be very lonesome. Bulgarians are very friendly people. They will open the door of their home for you, share their meal with you, befriend you and make you part of their family, just because you are far from home and missing your family and friends. WE ARE EXTREMELY HOSPITABLE PEOPLE. Exactly the opposite from the culture in Western Europe where everyone keeps it all for themselves and you can live years without really knowing your neighbours and never being invited in your neighbours' home. Something unthinkable in Bulgaria. I miss also the food, so AFFORDABLE. Gosh, for the same price in Bulgaria I can invite at least 4 people to a restaurant (compared to Western Europe). What I do not like is corruption. However, Bulgaria still is a low crime rate country. Or is it? My experience dates back 10 years.
@t6bib
@t6bib 3 года назад
I'm a current final year student planning on going to study in plovdiv on a few months. While initially I only looked at how prices are overwhelmingly low compared to where I am now (Ireland), through some reading and watching I've grown to love the country. I've lived in Ireland my whole life though I'm of Southeast Asian descent and while the people are often deemed incredibly friendly, my experience with making friends are quite similar to that of yours. Curious as to why you left bg, anything apart from the apparent unemployment and low pay?

I visited Bulgaria a few times. Plovdiv is a very old and nice city. I also liked Varna. Next time I need to visit Veliko Tarnovo. There are also beautiful mountain villages with authentic architecture, like Koprivshtitsa. And not to forget the famous Rila monastery. Some less popular towns suffer from depopulation, as many youngsters try to make a living abroad. Food is cheap and usually good, but there are not many high cuisine restaurants. The climat can be harsh in winter and super hot in summer. I had close to 40 degrees in Plovdiv. As hot as the summer can be, as warm are the people. They're very welcoming, helpful and interested. I always felt safe on the streets, also at night. The nature is stunning, especially in the mountains. A beautiful, maybe slightly underrated country that is definitely worth a visit!

@darkrailroader8692
@darkrailroader8692 2 года назад
Do not come to the US. Even in the rare spots with hertige american culture like new hampshire or western rural culture like nebraska are being ruined by the globalist consumer culture and all the worst aspects of america are promoted. Additionally, the cost of living is outrageous. All the places you mentioned are going to cost you a lot to live in, just the basics are expensive, and now we have 20% inflation, so its going to get even worse. The number one cost will be housing, and you wilk have to pay the security tax for safe housing. This is the hidden tax applied to the monthly rent or cost of the property to live in a safe area. For instance, in chicago you can buy a place on the southside for under 50k, but you will get shot. So the equivalent place in a modestly safe area like rogers park will cost 300k. Don't come to the US, it is literally turning into poor, corrupt northern mexico. No part of the country has been left untouched, even the tiny rural town of 200 people i grew up in now has illegal mexicans in it and crime has increased 400%. This is a tiny midwestern town with 200 people and it has been ruined, now there is trash along the roads, illegals are everywhere, and the culture i grew up with is gone. Do not come to the us if you want to live a safe and quiet life.

As Bulgarian native I wish to thank you for your time and efforts creating that nice video! I agree and confirm most of your statements, with some exceptions and comments: 1. Sofia is not the best town to live in. The major advantage is that you are close to the biggest international airport. But you should consider high level of pollution, traffic jams and lack of typical Bulgarian hospitality and atmosphere. Sofia becomes more an EU capital and lost it's charm. Well, you may find charming some old communistic and historical buildings. 2. Although there were few fragments of videos from Veliko Turnovo, you never mention that town. It's our old capital, unique place, I highly recommend everybody to visit it. It's a must if you are into historical tourism or plan to live in Bulgaria. 3. Be prepared for corruption /within police, public administration and up to the government/. Poor public medical care system and plenty of poor people in the country side. 4. Stray dogs might be a problem only at the slums or some isolated villages. Finally a tip: my favorite beach is Аркутино, you can google it.

There are still some villages, where people did not lock their doors even while they are sleeping at the night. Because there is no criminals, just pristine air, silence and lovely nature. Most stray animals are friendly and will even let you pet them, I'm 20, I've lived my whole life here and in that time I've only met about 3 stray dogs that actually wanted to bite me, be that because they were aggressive or i unintentionally scared them into trying to bite me. But if you are afraid of diseases and the like you can just shoo them away or if you so pet them, just wash your hands with soap or hand sanitizer. As for why most strays are friendly, that's because we tend to give them food and water when we see them, we pity them for having to live out in the cold winters and hot summers, at least most of us do, there are some who find it funny to mess with them, which I find sad.

Thank you for this video! I have been saying for years that Bulgaria is the most beautiful country in the world. It has everything. For a person from the USA, looking for housing with amenities similar to what Americans have come to be used to is not cheap. I checked into houses near Varna and you will not find them to be inexpensive. Still, they are less then what it costs in any big city in the USA. I found affordable houses between Golden Sands and Varna. Another city that is affordable is Stara Zagora. Basically a nice 2 br 2 bath apartment in Varna is around 70,000 to over 100,000 Euros. I found some houses in the 100,000 to 150,000 Euros for a 3 br 2 bath outside but near Varna and slightly cheaper near or in Stara Zagora. Also construction is more masonry as opposed to the usual 2 x 4 sheet rock walls as found in the USA so you don't deal with the 'paper thin' walls that transmit noise easily between apartments. If you like rock music, Sofia has a bunch of amazing bands like Hellion Stone, Der Hunds, Fat Bertha and Caliberty. Not sure at present, but I am seriously thinking of leaving the USA for Bulgaria. Oh one thing. Bulgaria actually created the cyrillic writing system and a lot of signs and such are in Bulgarian and written in cyrillic so you need to learn both the language and the cyrillic writing. USA is getting too expensive and also has higher rates of violent crime then any city in Bulgaria. You are 35 times more likely to be a victim of crime in a US city then in a city like Stara Zagora or Plovdiv. Bottom line. Do your own research on the cost of living. Be realistic. If you had a 3000 sq ft house in the USA, don't expect to be happy in an 800 sq ft apartment with 2 small bedrooms and one bath. Also, stuff like cars and such cost as much in Bulgaria as they do in the USA. I mean, an Infiniti Q60 is 55K Euros in the USA and Bulgaria. So be prepared to to pay the same for many things in Bulgaria as you did in the USA or other western countries.

As a Bulgarian I can say this video is surprisingly accurate. The one thing I`m not sure about is that everything in the capital is in walking distance. I can`t say Sofia is a small city. Maybe if you live in the city center maybe everything you normally need would be in a walking distance, but if you need to go somewhere specific outside of the center you may have to use the public transport or have a car, which is really not to be preferred since it is sometimes a real struggle to find a parking spot!

Well, some people watching this might think moving to Sofia would mean going to the beach every weekend, but reality is you are 4-5 hour drive away from the beach. In addition, don't count on people speaking English everywhere as this is just not true - young people do speak English, but people on low-paying jobs don't so you will likely struggle in the supermarket counter or in the taxi.

An interesting and quite comprehensive video. I assume your target audience is Americans (not Europeans) as you quote prices in US$, which are meaningless to me. I would prefer in Leva or Euros but that is just me. The "o" in Povdiv is short (to be fair you seemed to get this right the sceond time it was mentioned) and the "e" at the end of sirene (white cheese) is pronounced not mute. Regarding driving I have found that there has been a very big improvement in the rural roads particullary as regards reduction in number and seriousness of potholes in recent years but this does vary from (Oblast) province to province. I have not needed 4WD, but winter tyres are obligatory from when the winter season is officially declared. Like most people in BG, I have two sets of car wheels, one with summer tyres one with winter tyres as it is easier to just change the wheeels than remove and refit tyres.

This video is misleading. If you are not a Bulgarian citizen, you cannot buy land in Bulgaria. (I know this firsthand...my wife is Bulgarian and we had to fight to have my name added to the deed on our house) You CAN, however, buy an apartment or business structure. You do not have to "register at a police station" for an extended stay....that is ridiculous. You can stay 90 days as a visitor without question...and a 90 day extension is fairly easy to get. Sofia is NOT inexpensive...it is quite the opposite.. Good luck finding an apt. for 600 bucks....lol And, it is NOT "walkable"....it is a very dirty, confusing city to navigate and has zero parking. It is a wonderful city...but, it is expensive and a nightmare to try to find your way around. (I take a taxi EVERYWHERE) English is widely spoken here...so, there is very little "language barrier" issues. English is a required language in the school system. Also, it is misleading to call Bulgaria "reasonable" when it comes to cost of living. That is relative to wages...and wages are extremely low. So, unless you have a cushy job lined up, or a trust fund, be prepared to struggle. "Racism" is almost non-existent...Bulgarians are more worried about the gypsy population that is sucking the system dry. Many things you say are true...Bulgaria is AMAZING in so many ways. You should visit some time.

Do not mix Bulgarian roots with Turkish nonesense (Bulgaria is at least 1000 years older than them). The names Turkey and otomans did not even exist when great ancient prime 7 tribes of 7 brothers call them selfs Bolghars. Bulgarian name comes from proto Bulgars from words "Bog-hary" wich literally translates from proto Bulgarian language "thank god" as we had more gods than Greeks back then. The name Bulgaria was never changed ever since its creation, around 2500 years ago acording to secretly preserved sourcess throught centuryes. We don't just use Cyrilic alphabet, we invent it, we don't just speak Bulgarian - it is the main base of all slavic languages incuding Russian (btw we give them the Cyrilic alphabet along with christianity). I see you've really poor research on Bulgaria's history, so don't speak of something you are not familiar with. Do not relay on Facebook as virtual social live is not important for us and most of the mature people does not even have social media accounts. Street animals are not problematic as they are healthy and won't bite you because all Bulgarian people taking care of them like pets and they got inspected often - you can see yellow plastic marks on their ear.

My last comment was cut, I don't know why. As you can see from earlier comments, I don't agree to that romani culture and choice of work is begging.

"why don't you go back to your own country" or something of the kind. I don't get people like you at all, praying I meet few that share this mindset during my uni life.

My country, Bulgaria is indeed a Beautiful place to live, but our government is shit, because instead of fixing our problems like street pavement and renovating and stuff like that they steal money.

Well, I've watched that 20 seconds again and again, it seem you are right! I should have known that place if it is in Bulgaria... I'm 90% positive it is not in Bulgaria, maybe Greece?

An ok overview, I guess. It's odd how one sentence describing Sofia gets mixed in with beaches or national parks-- in Sofia??

As Robin Blue said, the Bulgarians are friendly but they have built a barrier and are protected from invasions, because of the strategic place where the country is geographically located. Many foreigners who have bought property in Bulgaria find it very difficult to adapt to the behavior and cunning methods of local people when they do not know the meaning of the Bulgarian slang they speak. And there is no mention of the gypsies, who have recently become numerous. As like all people on earth, in Bulgaria everything is money!
