Go to the heriot watt web page. See what is covered each year and try to understand it before even starting the year. These videos from metroun are very valuable. Do as much research as you can for BCIS. And Bill of quantities. BCIS with LCC (life cycle costs). If you can get a head start with using and learning how to use BIM that will help immensely . Balkan architect here in RU-vid will help you with BIM

We would recommend the Routledge Quantity Surveying pocket books if you want some good material to start out with. It is also worth searching for some academic articles online, many of which you can access for free that cover the basics of the subject.
I know this was only a year ago, but are all these books still relevant now? Would they help in preparation for me starting my degree next February? Thanks!

Hi Duncan, as big fans of your books it is a real shame for us to read this comment. We are a team of 3 Quantity Surveyors who have progressed together within the Quantity Surveying realm over the past 10 years. The first book suggested was one that I used during my studies at university and found extremely useful and insightful. Without it, I would have had a large gap in my knowledge and base-line understanding when actually coming to work on real life construction projects as an assistant QS. Our personal experience has seen us get involved with many areas across the construction industry and as we are sure you are aware, the Quantity Surveying profession is extremely broad and depending on where the QS works, and who for, they may indeed be involved with different tasks. So we feel your comment suggesting the first book would not be helpful slightly narrow-minded. As with any book, the information may or may not be useful or relevant to the reader but it can be subjective and completely dependant on what the reader is seeking to gain, particularly students. We personally feel that as much knowledge as possible one can attain, directly related to or, around such a broad and complex subject such as Quantity Surveying can be helpful depending on individual circumstance.

Hello Yanbo, these books would absolutely be suitable for Quantity Surveyors in Australia! A lot of the principles of QSing are the same internationally. Are you studying QSing or are you already working?
