The Grande Tour Episode 8.
Day 5: 13th July 2023
A supplement to Episode 7 where I followed the Rio Grande from Grand Junction, to Montrose, to Ridgway and to Ouray, here I took a side-step from Montrose to visit Cimarron Canyon where a locomotive and cars is displayed on a bridge as a memorial to the old railroad. A beautiful monument.
Following from this video will be:
- Ep. 9: Ridgway Railroad Museum
- Ep. 10: Ouray, from the ground and high above
- Ep. 11: Tracing the Rio Grande Southern!!!
Then a whole lot more as I make my way towards Denver.

Hello Simon, a fantastic video from your trip through the Rocky Mountains and to the railways in Colorado and New Mexico. Interesting is this little train on the bridge with a small steam locomotive, a boxcar and the caboose. The Galloping Goose is very beautiful. Thanks for showing and best regards Wolfgang🎥👍👍👍🙋‍♂

On my trips to Colorado & New Mexico I could easily go back and enjoy more trains. Plus there are other museums with transport interest.

Great tour filled with epic railway history and amazing scenery. It's kind of a shame that many of these route will never hear the sound of rail traffic again, but at least there are some elements left to savour.

It's well worth stopping by. As I say you can really picture the trains coming through back in the day, which is so different from trains on display in rural areas. Cheers!

OK here’s a fun story! They took the train off the bridge for restoration and the locomotive went one way and the car went another way and the caboose ended up at Wasatch Rail Contractors in Cheyenne Wyoming. And as they tore into it, they found on the back platform where someone had taken their dogs license and nailed it to the side of the caboose. Apparently the dog had died in an order to keep a memory of the dog he had nailed the license up there. And then it had gotten painted over and forgotten about. It had been hanging there since as I recall 1920? We have a picture of it someplace!

I’ve always wanted to visit the 278, and go to the RGS area. I’ve only ever visited the C&TS, ever since I can remember and the D&S once in 2021. Great video as usual!

I'm glad I managed to stop by as this display is quite different being out on it's own, rather than in a town like most displays. You'll have to make it over this way some time! It really was special passing through all the RGS scenes we are all so familiar with from seeing historic photographs. I really felt like I was walking through history. Thanks so much!

Well, I suppose that if you live in one of those apartments in Tokyo the size of a closet and you are into Fn3, you could build that train display up on the section of bridge and be satisfied you’ve build a prototypical thing! 😊 Awesome video as usual.

My first thought was "what a stupid place to display a train". My second thought " I bet that's difficult to vandalize".

Haha! Yes, I was similar. I must admit, I did really look and think how possible it would be to climb up. "Pretty difficult" was my conclusion. Thanks Paul!

This is really cool! I hope that engine survives the rockfalls. Would be a crying shame for it to be squished. (Did you go see the lake behind the dam?)

I hope so too. It's been there a long time, and I think there are a group of people who tend to it. I would have loved to have gone on towards Gunnison (following the Rio Grande route further) but I had Larry waiting for me in Ridgway, so I had to press on. Damned lakes make me feel queezy anyway, as you can see how deep they are! 😬 There's also Black Canyon which is RIGHT there, which would have been nice to see too. Oh well,.... Next time 🙄
