The Grande Tour Episode 9.
Day 5: 13th July 2023
HUGE thanks to volunteer Larry for coming to meet me a show me around!
Please visit and support the museum:
www.ridgwayrai...
The second supplement to Episode 7 where I followed the Rio Grande from Grand Junction, to Montrose, to Ridgway and to Ouray; Here I share my visit to the Ridgway Railroad Museum, personally shown around by volunteer Larry. Larry previously volunteered at the Galloping Goose Historical Society in Dolores, and is an experienced Galloping Goose driver having driven over the Durango & Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec railroads.
SO great for me to see a Galloping Goose for the first time! .... well, actually there were two!
"Motor 1" and "Goose 4" were on display, along with a great collection of Rio Grande Southern and Denver & Rio Grande Western vehicles.
I was lucky, as during the Summer, Goose 4 is usually on display in Telluride and only at the museum over the Winter.
Following from this video will be:
- Ep. 10: Ouray, from the ground and high above
- Ep. 11: Tracing the Rio Grande Southern!!!
Then a whole lot more as I make my way towards Denver.
If you'd like to support me after this very expensive trip and for the future, there is a "Super Thanks" function near the 'Like' button. Not expected, but would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
This is part of my amazing historic railroad-based trip between Salt Lake City and Denver.

Hello Simon, that was a very interesting video from your trip to the Ridgway Railroad Museum, Colorado. The galloping geese and the many carriages and wagons on display are fantastic. Very nice the small diesel locomotive PLYMOUTH and the very nice historical pictures and the interior of the car. I have the short Caboos #0577 and #0578 and three long Caboos. I have number 4 of the Golloping Goose in old condition and number 1. Your video is very nice and thank you for showing it. Kind regards Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang. I'm glad you enjoyed. A very nice collection of historic items. I also have two long cabooses, and I have Goose 7 in the freight configuration. Thank you! Simon

Wow what a place.Galloping geese it seems were ahead of their time.Trains now seem to be more and more like busses.Loved the little Plymouth. You do realise your going to have to go back when they get their steamer so you can show us. Amazing video again mate👍

@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 5 месяцев назад
Haha! You're right, they set the trend. That Plymouth is very cute! Yeah, that new engine should be quite something. Look up the 'Eureka' (build around 1875), and that will give you the idea, - but brand new??? Amazing. Thanks David! 👍

The railbus is a fascinating machine along with the other exhibits. I can see how, in its heyday, the rail bus was well suited to it roll. Nice to see that so many have been preserved for historic cultural heritage.
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 5 месяцев назад
Indeed! But there are railbuses, and there are the Galloping Geese. I'm not sure why, but I feel these are particularly characterful. They were very efficient and kept the railroad running a for a few more years, saving the expensive steam trains for heavier freight, such as cattle and such. It's so sad they only ran for tourists for two years. I have DVDs with plenty of footage from those years though. Thanks Steve!

❤ magnificent as always! We need to get back over there. Last time we were there the depot was somebody’s house, and I had no idea that the passenger car been brought down from Trout Lake. I guess we need to get out more!

Oh you didn't know? They have pictures of the recovery on their website. It's really beautiful now, especially compared to what condition it was before. You'll have to visit when the new steam engine is delivered, whenever that may be! Thanks Dale.

Many railways around the world have had their versions of rail buses, but the Galloping Geese have so much character. I love them 🥰

You'll know 😉. Just not sure how to present them at the moment. I took hundreds of pictures of rail stock from here, Chama, Antonito (and along the Cumbres & Toltec line) and Colorado Railroad Museum, plus buildings in Durango, Silverton, Antonito and Leadville. Thanks very much! Greetings from England 👍

The gondola is actually what is known as a "low-side" gon. Due to the height of the side, they were difficult to unload by hand, so the the fourth (top) board was removed, leaving a three board side.
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 5 месяцев назад
I actually didn't notice it was a board short. Thanks!

You need one of those old tractors for a model for your railroad.

Yeah, that's going to be something special and should be a big draw for the museum. And possibly another "old" 4-4-0 for touring other railroads? Wouldn't that be cool. Thank you!

A bit late, but my husband and I are just now finding this series. My husband keeps saying he really wants to get back to Durango and Silverton soon. After he heard you say that the Ridgeway Museum is hoping to get a steamer soon, he said "maybe we should wait another little bit..." :D
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 3 месяца назад
Hi! No such thing as late. When you find the video, that's your time to watch. So thank you for doing so. Yes, they haven't given much away about the steam engine at Ridgway, just "We're building a steam engine", and that it should be ready this Summer. So,... we'll see! I'm currently working on my Durango & Silverton video. I'm missing being there. This area I feel is my spiritual home. Thanks again! Simon

@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy That's pretty much what my husband says about that area too. And I don't care so much about trains (though I like the history of them), but I feel the same way about mountains in general.

I do feel at home in this part of the world, it suits my personality and interests. I don't think a move is on the cards though. If I had a lot more money, maybe. But I don't feel like "starting again" kinda thing right now. I have other parts of the world to vista, but I'm sure it won't be too long before I return to this area 🤞😊 Thank you!

Oh on the RGS? I don't actually know who organises that. Volunteers of course, and they have the information boards in places too. I don't know I'm afraid. Yeah, it's a great little museum, and will very much benefit with the addition of their steam engine!
