When I met my boyfriend's friends from Turkey, they asked me thousands questions about my family: what do my parents do, where do I live, in what kind of house, if we're wealthy, if we're from higher society class... I found it very weird and embarasing, but for them it wasn't rude, it was normal...

Great video! This is true! I became a lot more direct and look at fact/results rather than intentions after many years in the U.S. I debate openly more rather than stay in silence and am very punctual. Also I'm more individualism. My family in Asia think I changed a lot. Not saying it's good or bad it's just the way it is for me now...

You are a wonderful presenter with a flair for your own creative interest sparks, as well as clear & conscise ideas. Do please continue being 100% you! You are following your dreams, being helpful, putting forth the effort and consideration needed for an incredible work; it will catch on! If you never stop getting better every day by a bit, while keeping your true integrity, you will continue to grow into the best you can be; and this world needs your gift! YOU ARE AWESOME, GOOD SIR! ..for a well educated, always learning, high achieving, deeply collective, yet individually responsible, young woman from the South US, you've helped me immensely. The beliefs of the south are steeped in Eastern ways of thinking and the Weastern way of thinking. Our founding fathers of the U.S. sought to bring both together in a completely conscious & beautiful society. The sense of history has escaped much of Amercia by now & people like me have 2/3 more words & ideas, values & standards than most people I meet. I never knew how to communicate with these typical people...I am assumed to be condescending or over educated; even arrogant. I merely wish for the greater good of all my loved ones, using individual value as a means for this...I now know how I can be percieved as a 'cooler' person! Like I'm just going to stop now, but you are an amazing gentleman!

I think in the east, people more likely to question themselves to really understand the situation before come to open debate. When they idea clashed, both most likely to have self realization than confront the other person right away that your idea is not right. Sometimes they realize that they wrong and agree after think about it to avoid unneeded confrontation. In the other hand they also will stick to their idea if they still think it's right, that's why it's look like it's avoided, they just approach it differently.

Hey #JamesESL English you're a great teacher, and i admire your interest on teach us a lot. I have a little doubt. You said: "Well, if you question someone and they are on a higher level" Dont you made a mistake? cuz it supposed that you must use the verb "ask", so you can transmite the right idea, "question" it's Just a sustantive. Sorry in advance if im wrong or for my bad english, im learning yet.

As an asian, I can guarantee almost 90% of his explanation on east-side culture is true. But most of my friends are getting to prefer western culture. Relationship-based society is likely to give rise to some negative results... especially on politics. Anyway thanks a lot James! It has given a lot of foods for thought to me today.

Great, but please note that there are varying cultures in the United States. Therefore there are varying ideas about this. The older generation is usually more conservative and more like the East when it comes around to respect. For example: People were expected to have respect for their elders and call them Mr. or Miss. This has changed a lot. Now many people call those in authority by their first name. Also, some older people expect a young person to speak to them differently than they speak to their peers. For example: You wouldn't just run up to them and say, "Hey! How're you doing?" You would be expected to say, "Good Morning, Mr. Cole. How are you doing?" Your demeanor would be more subtle than in greeting your peers. This isn't true with everyone and you can't necessarily go by if someone is Hispanic or if they look more European or more African. It's best to consider this and take note before you speak. I'm not saying that you are wrong. A person can visit the U.S. for six months and have a completely different experience than another person who visits a different area does. Some places as a whole are more conservative. Children are watched more and controlled more than in other areas.

How about Russia, is it west or the east ones?
@MrMalandrinus2010
@MrMalandrinus2010 8 лет назад
+esa bayu rianto One can say, it is somewhat in between, but it will be an oversimplification. As a Russian, I can say that "Eastern side" is probably more strong in our society, but "Western side" is very visible too. And this will be also too simple. The Russian society is very diverse. There are many subcultures, region- and ethnic related. And on top of this it is all changing, especially in the last 25 years. I would say it is drifting to the "Western side".
@paulinegordeeva1800

James, your lesson's great! Just one question if it is OK for students in the West to correct their teacher's mistakes.
@toBe8ere
@toBe8ere 5 лет назад
Yes it is. In fact, it is encouraged because if the teacher makes a mistake and continues teaching like that, it could lead to the detriment of the student's education.

AMERICA was supposed to be a combination of both, providing endless possibility, opportunity and quality of life. The South and parts of New England, as well as several MidWest States shares this original concept; being the first of the States. America is strong, we will all learn to be balanced culturally one day; because good always triumphs.
@oo-nj7kg
@oo-nj7kg 6 лет назад
There is a question in my mind now. Why is individualism encouraged in western countries but people work well in groups?
@toBe8ere
@toBe8ere 5 лет назад
Because no matter how well you work in groups, there will come a time when you are forced to work alone or must take a leadership position due to some unforeseen circumstance. You cannot account for everything or everyone, therefore while group work is encouraged and is a necessary skill for the workplace, it is considered even more important for a person to be able to lead or stand on their own two feet. It indicates how reliable and determined someone is to succeed versus how well they are able to foster good relationships and maintain clear lines of communication.

My preferances: 1. neither 2. West 3. East 4. East (very much!) 5. East 6. East 7. West when it comes to appliance at law and order and science and practicalities ' East when it comes to social dynamics and arts and culture 8. East (I'm absolutely not punctual) So although I'm born, raised and have always lived in the West I'm actually pretty Eastern oriented ^^p

Alot of these are massive generalisations cos plenty of asian people are direct and say exactly what they think and will tell someone theyre fat especially the Chinese and plenty of westerners hide what they really think to not appear rude. I dont think you can simply classify human beings by points of the globe, individuals have their own attitudes and human beings are much the same world over. Plenty of western families worry about breeding thats not just an eastern thing, thats a status thing.
@Abu-Aley
@Abu-Aley 7 лет назад
points 2, 3, and 7 are not correct, especially nowadays. The pace of the moder , stressful life style forces people to be more and more accurate. However, I cannot deny that it is yet existing among us rounding the time.
@bobbrian5001
@bobbrian5001 7 лет назад
Hi James, thanks but i don't agree with some of your sentiments. Have lived both in China and France. For example comparatively, Chinese people are more - with the exact time while French people are more like relative time. For Germans, you must be atleast 5 minutes before exact time.

Point 3, about the group success, is pretty far from the realistic because lots of people are wring far from their families, societies, and groups. Nevertheless, they achieve and occupy high ranks among others, I mean in the middle east not Canada, and their success is outstanding, regarded, and appreciated from others.

Quite good lesson! I think Western culture is closer to me than Eastern one. Though I don't know much about Japan and China. 6th - it looks more like an American thing... I think Germany is different, though German culture is considered as Western one. What cultural traits I think fit me(as a person) better: 1. Western 2. Western 3. Western 4. Western 5. Western 6. Asian 7. Asian Though it depends greatly on situation. 8. Depends on circumstances

As I have been in Germany for 3 years, as a chinese, every time I wanna to meet friends or my supervisor in the college, I was always pünktlich! there just like what I thought I should be, but the Germans, they think 5 minutes late is absolutly OK for a 30 min. meeting..I'm not being critical, I'm just saying that the punctuality in German is no better than that in other nations.
