I share 8 food items that will store either long term or some of them store indefinitely. These are real foods that bring nutrition to our bodies. We should always have food in our pantry for the "what ifs" that can happen in life. Food is more valuable than gold if you are hungry.

Sandy, this is a very important podcast. So many ppl totally have their heads in the sand. I've been stocking up for years and continue to do so. We also got a generator for our home and our cabin. From wheat berries, oats, cane sugar, coffee beans, flour, dry beans, rice, canned fruits/vegetables, fats, honey, maple syrup, butter, raw cheese, household cleaners, spices, cocoa, chocolate chips, canning jars, toiletries, ........... Honestly, between Azure Standard and our local farmer that provides our beef, pork and chicken, I don't shop at regular grocery stores very often. Great list, but remember that grains, such as wheat, rice, flour, and oats, will become rancid if they're not stored properly. They need to be completely airtight. Dry beans are the same way. They get tough when they get a couple of years old. Pressure canning is a good way to preserve them. Another great tip, if it wasn't already mentioned, is to only store items that you already use (maybe a years worth) so that you can rotate through them. This alleviates some of the concern about the food going bad. Canned meats, tomato products, broths, potatoes, vegetables, and soups are good to store. Lastly, my husband had an older stock of survival seeds and they were no longer viable.

I live way out in the country. Red ones I think I heard are good, but wanted to ask you. Other recommendation for long-term, wine, vinegar. Look up this salt from italy. It is iodized. Seasonello. Jam lasts a long time. Way past the expiration date.

Thank you for the salt recommendation! Ok, so as far as wheat berries, I’ve learned a lot…hard white wheat makes good bread and tastes similar to store bought. Soft white wheat makes muffins, pancakes, quick breads etc… The thing about hard red wheat is it has a more nutty flavor. I will mix it with white every once in a while. But the white wheat options will definitely be more versatile for recipes!

People should learn to forage wild plants for medicine, salves and first aid tinctures. vodka and quality oils are needed. I have cooked old beans in an Instant Pot. This is a game changer for using up older stored beans and no extra soaking was needed. 😉

Make sure to rotate what you're storing. Use older things and replace them.

Great video! I’m pretty sure Redmonds is from salt mine not sea salt though
@Janet_1111
@Janet_1111 Месяц назад
It is a sea salt....and an excellent salt. This is from their website. "The Way Salt Should Be We think salt should be simple. It shouldn’t contain artificial additives or unhealthy pollutants. And it shouldn’t be stripped of beneficial trace minerals. It should be sea salt the way nature made it- nothing added, nothing taken away. Redmond Real Salt is unrefined sea salt mined from an ancient seabed in Utah where it’s safe from modern pollutants. It’s pure, unprocessed, and full of trace minerals that give it one-of-a-kind nutritional benefits and a subtly sweet flavor that brings out the best in each bite."

In America, most grocery stores carry California Olive Ranch and other good olive oils. Amazon is an easy place for me to buy Olive oils from overseas so I can buy from Greece, Morocco, Italy etc...

Popcorn has water in it, this why it pops and does not last for long term storage
@sandysteinbrook
@sandysteinbrook Месяц назад
When I say long term I mean a couple years. I know I can keep it 1-2 years easily. But you’re right that it won’t last for really long term storage.
@nadinefrandsen6087
@nadinefrandsen6087 Месяц назад
Mine has lasted well for 7 years now. Maybe how it’s stored makes a difference. And possibly what kind or quality. But like you say, it can also be ground for cooking or baking.

Popcorn?? That’s assuming you’ll have electricity or gas.
@sandysteinbrook
@sandysteinbrook Месяц назад
That is true, because we could easily lose electricity at this point in the craziness of the world. Or if you have a fire popcorn could work. We used to pop popcorn over the fire when we went camping when I was a kid.

It's very wise to have a back up form of cooking. We have lost power in the past due to storms, and have always had a back up way to cook as a just in case. Kind of what someone camping would do.
