Lemon Zest is beyond terrific. We just wish we didn’t lose so much fruit from them to bacterial spot. It wrecked the fruit year after year on them until we finally decided we couldn’t take all the waste anymore and topworked most of them. We’ll see what happens to them this season.

Hey! Kent mangoes don't grow true to seed afaik if you're looking to grow it to maturity and have it fruit in a pot, I also dont think theyre a container variety, but there are varieties that can be container grown!

You'd be eating so much time. Get an, Angie, Carrie, Cogshall, or Pickering or Hawaiian no. 4, all good condo mangos and you have fruit within a year or 2 depending on the size. You can keep them in a pot for at least 10 years.

Funny enough I pruned Irwin mango in maybe December January and it induced the tree to produce multiple flower panicle blooms from single branches in feb/march. Talk about resilience. I did just purchase a Phoenix mango. It was pruned before I bought it and was sprouting new growth upon purchase. A week later they shoots are at least a foot tall. Concerned about how vigorous it will be 😂

Thank you for mentioning the fibrous-ness(sp?). Can you mention which varieties are less fibrous?
@TropicalAcresFarms
@TropicalAcresFarms 4 месяца назад
Well on this video Dot, Lemon Meringue, Phoenix, Lemon Zest, Borsha, and Ambrosía are non-fibrous. Giselle has a little but nothing too bad. Prieto is enough to notice though not turpentine levels. The vast majority of the mangos we grow are non-fibrous so it’s a low hurdle to clear these days.

Hi. One of your videos you went to a farm where they were growing large mango trees in containers. I’m considering getting a buttercream mango and I want to keep it in a container but I don’t know what size. I don’t want to have to uppot it so I want the largest size it will need and I will plant it in that at the beginning. Can you remember what video that was or what size container I would need for a buttercream mango? I will be getting it in a 25 gallon container but I’m thinking at least a 50 gallon container will be it’s permanent home. Will that work or does it need to be even larger? I will keep it pruned down to about 10 feet at the most. Thank you so much, I very much enjoy your videos!!!
@TropicalAcresFarms
@TropicalAcresFarms 4 месяца назад
A 50 gal container would be adequate. We recommend stepping it up gradually. The natural progression for gallon size is typically 1-3-7-15-25-40+. Eventually you’ll probably need to root prune it but that might not be for a pretty long time if you don’t overfeed it.

do you know if there are varieties that are hardier and would survive without protection in the winter - zone 9A?
@TropicalAcresFarms
@TropicalAcresFarms 4 месяца назад
There really aren’t any that are going to be freeze tolerant so in 9A you probably just need to plan to protect them once in a while in the event you get freezes. You can either put a temporary structure around them or grow them in containers and bring them indoors during a freeze.

Inland south FL can get 10+ degrees colder at night than the coasts.. mostly a concern for young trees especially during the winter months. Can anyone recommend a variety that’s the most tolerant to colder temps? Anyone have any experience growing mangoes in ground in south central FL? Thank you for your response 🙂

I grow Valencia Pride, sugarloaf, and orange sherbet on the west coast of florida, near Clearwater. It gets cool over here, and all my trees are doing well
@TropicalAcresFarms
@TropicalAcresFarms 4 месяца назад
There’s not enough evidence to support saying one variety is definitively more cold tolerant than another, so we don’t recommend factoring that into the decision. When growing inland, disease resistance should be the most important consideration for what variety you choose to plant.
@icya5844

@@TropicalAcresFarms have you heard about lemon zest doing well on the west coast, near clearwater by chance? Im interested in purchasing, but I read they suffer from BBS
@TropicalAcresFarms
@TropicalAcresFarms 4 месяца назад
@@icya5844Lemon Zest Probably has a much better chance to thrive on the West coast of Florida where MBBS has never become a problem than on the East coast. We would definitely try it out over there and have heard good reports about it from people in that side of the state.

@TropicalAcresFarms I have seen mango and avocado trees with black trunk and branches. It doesn't affect all varieties. I was not able to find out what is the disease name?
@TropicalAcresFarms
@TropicalAcresFarms 4 месяца назад
Sometimes that’s just a benevolent mold. Other times it’s sooty mold, which is caused by the secretions of piercing/sucking insects like scales or mealy bugs. When it’s sooty mold you can treat it with horticultural oil to kill the insects and their larvae.
