This started out being a nice little review / recording session but you gave us a masterclass in production and working with the band! Great stuff guys!
A big thank you to Warren, Lee & Eric and all the team at Produce Like A Pro for this incredible demonstration of the EVO Expanded System (EVO 16 & EVOSP8) and showing off what it's capable! What an amazing performance from the fantastic Mckail Seely and all of the musicians on the day. A big thank you to Chris Sorem too! Another great masterclass from Warren! Thanks guys 😍 Good luck to all of you that have entered the Giveaway. Two EVO SP8's up for grabs! 🍀
Thanks ever so much guys! I really appreciate your amazing support! We really enjoyed using the EVO 16 and SP8! Yes, McKail is indeed a wonderful singer
The Audient stuff is top notch and punches way above its weight. This is a real game changer. Hats to you all for a brilliant review and a fantastic video
Thanks ever so much! McKail has amazing ideas and a very good idea of what she wants. My job is to help facilitate that, not dictate, great talents like McKail need to be helped flourish!
I know an EXTREMELY talented musician who is absolutely hopeless with running his mixes. This evo stuff gives us who are starting out inspiration to go for it. Thank you. Audient fan for life!
Warren! I think this is one of your Best videos to date. It combined the technical with the BTS of an actual session in a way that often gets lost. To my mind, the Producer's (and Director's in film) primary jobs are to get a Performance out of the performers, and Capture that performance with the crew. I know this was primarily a "product video", and I think Audient is consistently the best value for dollars on offer in every gear shootout (I own an Audient ASP2802. I wish/hope they bring it back.) And my main takeaway was that these Audient Pres do what all the previous Audient Pres do, even better. Which is get out of the way! Then the emphasis is on the Performance, the Room, the Performers Placement within the room, the Mic choices, the Mic Placement, auto level, and Record. Is that about right? With the tech out of the way you can focus on the performance, Knowing that whatever you come up with will be pristinely captured.
Fantastic! Just goes to show (again), that it's crucial to get it right at the source: 1: write a great song 2: learn to play well 3: use good (sounding) instruments in a not to echoey room Then you're basically set. Maybe 4: do not use the cheapest mics you can find, but an SM58 will go a long way.
I listened to the mix at the start of the video and was thinking about how incredible the mix sounded and then the no plugin reveal at the end threw me for a loop. Amazing work. It's about great performances at the end of the day. Stunning work everyone involved
Just wow, great video with so many inside things showed and Audient has really no mercy for its competitors :) Thank you, very much, Warren & the Team and great musicians to so generous and giving this video and multitrack away.
I love Motown ..and so that's how you do it .Very nice. My mixing skills may slowly be improving, but production and arranging wise there is still SO MUCH TO LEARN. Nice to watch a master here, Warren!
@@McKailSeely1 Thanks for replying :) To me you are a perfect definition of what an "artist" should sound like, what art making really is about Carpe Diem & Best of 2023 to you all!
Can we get more videos of you going through the production process with bands? The interface seems great but I loved watching you guys go through the creative process. Great video as always Warren!!
Great video! I must add though that the Behringer UMC 1820 (with midas pres) for $388 Canadian coupled with the Behringer ADA 8200 (with midas pres) for $329 Canadian, is still the cheapest way I know of to get 16 channels of interface up and running. Total of 18 in's and 20 out's for just over 700 Canadian.
A Behringer XR18 gives you 16 inputs with Midas pres. Had it up and running for several days recording a four piece band, no issues at all. Was around 400 Euros a couple of years ago, but has increased tremendously in price since.
This is such a great addition to the Evo line. Instead of having to replace your existing interface, you can just expand it. It is especially nice as you also get extra outputs, which are often even more scarce than inputs. Great for monitoring and hybrid mixing scenarios. I wonder if you can daisy-chain multiple of these?
Thanks for the love Ef Nerva! Our thoughts exactly. You can indeed hook up your interface with multiple SP8's as long as your interface contains the right amount of ADAT in's and out's. For example the EVO 16 has two ADAT in's and outs so you can enjoy the the total channel count of 24ins and 24outs :)
I really like what Audient is doing with this EVO series. I wish they would make a EVO SP32 with only line In/Out (maybe in DB25 to directly connect to a patchbay, or outboard gear, or synths, etc…). It would be good to expand your setup with an EVO 16 with an EVO SP32 to have more line I/O. I hope Audient is reading ;)
@@weareevoaudio Awesome! I would love to stack an EVO 16 with a SP8 to have 16 Pres, and then add a SP16 or SP32 to have more Line In/Out (without Pre), just to connect more hardware such Synths, Outboard gear and such. So far, only brands such UA, Antelope and such are doing that kind of system, but they're expensive for new musicians. Audient is the perfect choice for good quality at a very friendly price tag for home studios (which are the future of music now). I always loved Audient, I did built a studio in a music school in Canada (GRPC) recommending them to purchase three Audient Zen. So I always keep an eye to your product so I will know what to recommend for the next build ;) Cheers
I wish we could do the same performance with a couple of other interface too, same Band, same Song, Same Room.....for example with the Presonus HD8, then Focusrite Clarett, then RME, Then Apollo, no mixing pure Recording and switching between all of them that would be great.....i know its very much work, so thank you warren for this performance, and it sounds great.
Great preamp. Sounds awesome, and you get the levels in almost no time. Perfect. Just get the instruments and mics set up, do a little run-through, and you're ready to go. It helps to keep the creative flow up. I wish I had something like that years ago.
It really shows that these days, we don’t need a shit ton of gear, plugins and such. If you have good instruments, a nice room, and great knowledge, you can record with very affordable gear. The music has never been as affordable an accessible as of today. It’s really a great time to make music… no more excuses.
Loved this video -- I used multiple UA Apollos and was looking for about 4 more channels of input for tracking by leveraging the ADAT ins on my interfaces. There are options, some fairly expensive. This seems like a no brainer for my setup. Great video Warren -- the song and performance was great and the unmixed results fantastic. Nest Recorders -- just an awesome looking studio (watched the previous video you did there with the studio run down) with tons of vibe and Chris is great. Thanks again.
The most awesome thing is that you can connect two SP8s to an EVO16 for a total of 24 inputs! That's even fancier. :D This also strikes me as a great setup for connecting analog hardware in a mixing setup.
It looks like the non EVO unit was for extra headphone outs. I'm happy with the EVO16 but think Audient might want to consider another unit that provides many headphone outs.
If I was to get this for a studio and I was recording a band love I’d buy an inexpensive solution for headphones and not just a generic addition of headphones. That way you could have individual headphone mixes
@@Producelikeapro Thanks for the answers. I just bought an EVO 16 so am new to recording audio. What would be examples good/complimentary headphone mixers?
i just ordered the audient asp 800 to add on to my apogee. but i'm considering getting the evo instead and saving myself a few bucks.🤔 This unit is awesome
Great video, especially the production part. I keep hearing electric guitar sounds like that recently. Not exactly that, but that kind of vibe. Marc Neilson has that sort of vibe on his into video's, and there's a rather brutal (but super cool) sound like this on Beth Rowley's Howl at the Moon. What's the pedal chain used here, what was the Fender amp and was there reverb on the amp?
Exactly. That will make one wonder about the mic pres quality. As far as I know, companies are not giving them away, instead they are selling them to make profit. Not that hard to conclude that although they may be perfectly fine, surely, they cannot be some jaw dropping mic pres. I m sure they will be great anyway for home use and such ;)
Cheers for the distraction today, Eric, Lee, Warren, et al! I was conveniently finding ways to stay un-busy on a day I could easily be mixing and now for 31 minutes I don't have to :D Cheers and enjoy the rest of the holiday :)
I wish the sp8 had all 8 inputs on the back or the channel 1 + 2 also available on the back. I have to connect two jack cables from the front if I want to use all 8 channels. The Evo16 already have the two Di's. I am not sure why they chose this design. But it does sound good
that is such an excellent looking/sounding adat. would love to have one but cant afford it so entered the giveaway instead. so grateful you keep running those btw. perhaps 1 day will get lucky. anyhow enjoyed the video. been trying to catchup on this channel all the other videos too thank you warren, and everyone involved. it really feels like being part of a wider community
I'd try the spec comp from Analog Obsession on the kick drum... And it's free. Does special things when goosing the syncopation, which is where Warren is directing the production towards... The Motown skip down the street bounce.
The first thought was the tone of the bass. It sounded like there was a mute/sponge under the strings, but there wasn't! That is some controlled playing ;) is he palm muting there?
Watched the reveal this morning. Checked the prices of the EVO 16 on a whim, and was disappointed to see that it was raised $50 due to the release of the SP8... Should've gotten one last week!
Sounds fantastic! Looking to getting the SP8 for use with my Galaxy 64 interface from Antelope... Could I use the 8 anilog outs into the anilog in's of the Galaxy? In other words, can I get whatever I'm getting from the preamps of the SP8 into the Galaxy that way?
I gave this a shot. I used the overdubs & didn't use the room sound. I also used the Bass D.I. instead of the amp. SSL X-Comp, SSL Vocalstrip 2, SSL Drumstrip, SSL Native FlexVerb & the stock plugins in Reaper. Can we upload our mix on RU-vid & link you guys to it?
The only thing I don’t like about the interface is that you can’t rack mount it. Seems odd it doesn’t have rack ears but I would consider it if it had some.
@@damon_aaron unfortunately you can't anymore :( (in EU at least). I think they underestimated how many people who buy a 8ch interface want to rack mount it.
Sounds awesome. How does the SP8s sound compared to the ASP800? I know the price difference is $400. I am wanting to upgrade from my Behringer ADA8200.
So pretty much record a Roland set and guitar for basic track which uses more than standard 8 tracks into a standard 8 input presonus fire studio with FireWire and legacy drivers, which leaves us short if we want to go vocals for a live feel. So your saying by obtaining the 16 and the 8 we could have 16 channels live onto pro tools with almost zero latency ?
Maby someone can explain the difference to the Focusrite Scarlet 18i20, because i think the Scarlet one might be cheaper with more funktions (exept auto gain) Great Video tho
Hi! i have a pcie card with word clock in/ out and madi optical. I can nothing about this. Is it possible to connect this optical to a madi optical? and can this EVO SP8 be used as a 7.1 preamp, as it has eight output? and the word clock, is it only to sync sound/ time, or does it also transfer sound? want to say lady vocal have very good voice. cool video, cant play anything, trying guitar, but i just dont have it i think.
That’s a great question! I don’t honestly know the answer. I would definitely reach out to Audient support. Are you a PLAP Academy member? Thanks ever so much for sharing your question
So I have 2 Slate VRS8s. They have been discontinued. I love the ease of these. However not working with my computer anymore. Would the evo 16 and sp8 be equivalent sonically? And worth getting
Hi warren, Thanks for you great review of the product , as ever... Just a question though....Are that pres able to handle and preserve enough headroom if used with pro channel Strip (with transformers and +4db output) Neve 1081, Focusrite ISA115, Studer 169 etc ? I've been using some Focusrite Scarletts , running signal from the ISA 215 or studer 169 would oblige to set the outputs very low (and even the gain of the external pre) , and the gain on the Scarlett at minimum for no problems . Will the range of pres on the EVO SP8 preserve enough headroom so we can use the external pre in their full potential (crunchy bite) ? Thanks again :) and take care.
in your opinion @producelikeapro, where does this preamps are? above focusrite scarlet range but below focusrite clarett? or how close to either would you put them?
Hi Warren, could you re-amp (or route to analog gear) from DAW out through adat outputs through SP8 analog outputs? Much appreciated and great informative videos. Cheers!
Great episode.......you should do more of these "how the sausage is made" segments 😉 This is a pretty solid QPR piece of gear 😉👍 I'm wondering about a few things..........Is the EVO SP8 a stand alone interface?, or does it need the EVO 16 to function?. I wasn't clear on that?. They both look to be the same thing?, but the EVO 16 is $50 more...........Also, I'm wondering is it possible to plug in external pres to the line inputs?. I tried doing that with my Behringer UMC 1820 (the Behringer equivalent to the EVO). When I tried plugging my lunchbox into the line in points, it never really worked well. I'm recommending this new EVO to a friend of mine that started with the EVO4.
Hey John, thank you for your question. I can confirm that they are two different products. The EVO SP8 is a Mic Preamp - 'Expander' and can be connected to ANY interface with an ADAT input not just the EVO 16. The EVO 16 is designed to be a Host interface rather that an ADAT expander so the audio routing does get a but tricky when used away from a computer. The EVO SP8 would be the ideal product for this setup instead as it has all the audio routing taken care of to be a standalone unit. Yes, you can plug external pre-amps into the Line inputs of the SP8. This will still pass through the SP8's pre-amps but provided you keep the gain of the SP8 at minimum, you'll get no additional noise or colouration added by the SP8 since the EVO pre-amp is so quiet and clean. If you are looking for more information do check out the EVO SP8 videos on our channel. Hope this is helpful ☺
I know this is a random question but... is there distortion on your voice when you speak normally... or is that a problem somewhere (either on my or your side) Or it is just the roughness in your voice
So i’m thinking about the sp8 for adding extra line inputs and outputs through adat. Is this enough or is a ferrofish pulse 16 muchhh better for outboard gear?
Hey micmarkno, thanks for the question. You can use the EVO 16 as the host interface and connect two EVO SP8's to give you the total channel count of 24ins and 24outs.
Hi, I have a question. There are 8 line output right? Let's say I am connecting a headphone to each of the output.. I will got 8 mono output right.. If I combine each of the output, for example output 1+2, 3+4, etc to a mixer/headphone station, I will get 4 stereo output with it right?
