Thank you so much for this video! I have a question... all of my concrete jars seem to turn out with dark patches even if i do not use any color. When I don't use any color its difficult to notice but if I add some colof it is very annoying. Any suggestions, or any idea of why this is happenning? Please help
@upvibecandle
@upvibecandle 2 года назад
The short answer is I truly don't know. Discoloration is a tricky subject, since many factors can contribute to the problem. Is this always happening or just once in a while? What mixture are you using? Do you measure your ingredients or eyeball them? With that said, discoloration can be from several factors including inconsistent mixtures, too much or not enough water, low quality materials, poor workmanship, the use of certain chemicals, environmental issues, or issues created during the pouring or curing process. Try jotting down your process and making small changes along the way. Use a distilled water (not purified). Distilled water removes certain chemicals that are in tap water... water that could very well be causing the problem. I hope that helps.

Hello and trank you for your Videos! I have a question... I'm really desperate now... I've been pouring my concrete vessels for a few weeks now, using cement all and the molds from modern craft labs. I also use distilled water to mix and always clean the molds like in your video. The mixing ratio is also as explained in your video and everything works great. BUT there is a problem that I just can't get a grip on. There are small white dots on all my vessels and there are really a lot of them. I've tried pouring without pigments, more water, less water, cleaning molds with distilled water, changing the temperature in the room.... they just don't go away and the optics suffer so much.... have you ever experienced something like this? seen it and have an idea why? I've watched so many videos but there are no white dots anywhere, not even in beginner videos :(

It sounds like efflorescence. Efflorescence appears as a white deposit of mineral salts on the face of concrete. As moisture moves up to the surface of the concrete, it carries along with it calcium salts from within the concrete. When the salts reach the surface, they react with CO2 in the air and form insoluble calcium carbonate. To get rid of that you have to make sure that your water content is accurate (try less) and you aren't working in a damp or humid environment. Another idea is to cover your concrete so it doesn't dry so fast. Try these out and let me know what happens.
@NorristopianKnifeGuy

So just wanted to clarify. Cement all is a hydraulic cement and it does cure under water. And is 30 dollars a bag. There are other cement mixes that will suffice.
@upvibecandle
@upvibecandle Год назад
Yes CA is hydraulic CSA cement with silica sand and hardens due to hydration and not because it dries. I pay $26 for a 55lbs bag. Check out my Alternatives to CA video for other mixes.

Was thinking about using Perfect Cast for my candle containers...would that be a bad idea?
@upvibecandle
@upvibecandle Год назад
You don't want to just use any old plaster for candle jars. The calcination process begins at a low temp. I am testing hydrocal and that is a plaster that looks promising.
@Level_Up_Nation
@Level_Up_Nation Год назад
@@upvibecandle A lot of People on here use CementAll product that you can buy at Home Depot for $7 for a 25lb box, might go with that, but was hoping for a more white colored product for easier coloring. Perfect Cast is a high detailed casting material that is supposed to be stronger than anything else since it has porcelain in it as well. Just have to seen anything about people using it for Candle Making, it's a little pricey being $15 for 4lb, but, cheaper than Jesmonite. I'll take a look at what you are testing, but I just might go ahead and try out the Perfect Cast, I'm just trying to make nice unique Candle Containers but at the same time keeping shipping weights in mind. BTW Great Video!
@upvibecandle
@upvibecandle Год назад
@@Level_Up_Nation I have read that it should not be used for candle jars however the best way to know is to test it for yourself. If you seal it properly and have your surface temperature in a safe range you should have a clear understanding if it is usable or not. Let me know how it goes.
@Level_Up_Nation
@Level_Up_Nation Год назад
@@upvibecandle USG Hydrocal White Gypsum Cement, is a cheaper route and is almost like Perfect Cast, just seal it like concrete and if it is strong as they claim, then it would be a perfect molding material, having to shift it into water wouldn't make it a good indoor use though.
@Level_Up_Nation
@Level_Up_Nation Год назад
@@upvibecandle Interesting, didn't see anything about it not to be used for Candles, just that you have to seal it and it can handle a temp, but, that's what's testing is for and research! But, I'm more concerned about the item surviving shipping lol heat issues can be dealt with, even have seen someone use Liquid Glass engine block sealer to line the plaster with glass. Lol
