8 PASSENGERS SPECIAL: Unseen evidence in Ruby Franke, Jodi Hildebrandt child abuse cases revealed

The Washington County Attorney’s Office has released previously unseen evidence in the Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt child abuse cases.
The two women were sentenced in February on second-degree aggravated child abuse charges after pleading guilty in December.
As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped two counts from the original six. The women were both sentenced to no more than one to 15 years behind bars on the four remaining counts, to be served consecutively.

It’s worse than that. I think they believed it. They just didn’t believe it was bad enough to cross an imaginary boundary in their minds, between acceptable abuse as corporal punishment and unacceptable abuse that is beyond the pale. I think they thought she was a spoiled brat exaggerating a bit and she and her siblings deserved discipline. There’s a problem that is common in certain areas, where people believe in corporal punishment. Generational trauma skews the ability to perceive abuse. It’s tolerated to an extent as proper treatment to raise children. Especially in communities where these outdated practices and ideology have altered the perception of an entire society. You can see it in the news reports on this case that began by saying « it was worse than we all thought ». They have to validate the fact it was abuse. Justifying the attention and intervention and persecution of the abusers. To validate the attention gained by this case, for it’s integrity - by these people who were influential, selling an ideal lifestyle - to tell everyone it’s not just bc everything they did was exaggerated under a microscope of public scrutiny.

That little emaciated, timidly determined boy whose legs had been wrapped in cayenne pepper, honey and duct taped until they were infected and skin sloughing off, that CHILD who respectfully knocked on the door despite his emergency and, politely asked the neighbor to please take him to the police station, despite being in pain and suffering and starving, he didn’t look evil to me. That lady paramedic was absolutely heartbroken by what she saw with Russell the boy that escaped and alerted the neighbor. Cutting Eve the little girls hair off was nothing more than more punishment and abuse. This entire story makes me physically sick!

@@MrDavenezI believe she was staying at the cow’s house, not entirely certain, but it seems so. As Russel and Eve were in the house, and Ruby’s journal talks about the “punishments” that she and the cow did, so it’s highly likely ruby lived/stayed with Jodi.

When Ruby and Jodi were both caught, they both said ON RECORDED AUDIO - "I can't believe that God wants me to end my care for the kids like this....but he told me - this is it. This is your moment. I felt it." Then, once they were arrested and talking on recorded jail calls - "God spoke to me last night. And he said to me - "You are completely misunderstood and this will be your test of faith and torment. God told me last night to hold firm. This is my time, he said." And then, when it was time to plead guilty - "God opened my eyes to what I was doing. He is so wise. He showed me the truth." God is used to justify getting arrested, prosecuted and even convicted. Whatever is most convenient. Religious people are the biggest dullards on the planet.

@@denz4133 There's a concept called free will, God tries to influence us for the better, to do what is right. He hints through other means, He tries very hard to guide and give us the help we need. Sometimes people refuse outright, they make their own choice. But sometimes something tragic like this happens, God is taking care of the children and the other victims. Justice is being served out. And those guilty will be punished by Him, they will be forced to see, feel, understand the pain and suffering they caused to everyone connected to the crime, even remotely.

The religious insanity is something I know way too personally and went through it throughout my childhood. The mother, father, and their spiritual guide are monsters who should never have been allowed in the company of children, never mind having children of their own, smh. The damage they've done won't be healed for the entirety of their children's lives, and i say this a 50 year old man with one older and one younger sister who have also never been able to overcome the damage sustained as children. Religion is always a great excuse to take humanity out of the conversation, at least imo and what I've learned through my life experience make that to be true. Pray for the children, they're really going to need it.

they had split one year before and he had not seen them in that time. The abuse was 3 Months long from what I gather. They moved down with Jody in April and the Boy escaped in August. He was unaware of the abuse but he has not regained custody of the children

I find it funny that she was already on the phone with her lawyer. Did she realize that one of them finally found the courage and strength to escape, and got scared? I hope these two women rot in prison until their MAXIMUM sentence is served. No parole for them. I can’t even watch the video of R at the neighbor’s house asking for favors. I cry every time.

The most upsetting part is that they little boy had to escape the house of horrors for the authorities to do something. Just like with domestic violence, until they found you dead they believe you. The were so many opportunities and they didn’t do anything because they’re white privileged people. They still blaming the children, they’re sick and disgusting. @RoxyPinson So many abused children only find the help they need if they can escape their home... it is heart rending. I think rather than race and class being explanations as to why or how they got away with this for s-o-o-o long is that they're probably all Mormon in these communities. No one questions those in good standing, when the families are all well-known to the church as well.... and with Jodi being a licensed therapist recommended by all the elders or bishops is part of this story as well...People may have made numerous complaints, but they were certainly overlooked to protect the church, or else people feared the power it has in the state. Race and class certainly do factor into many miscarriages of justice, yet this one is all about small town fundamentalist conformity, and deference to their church's questionable teachings, at the expense of these children's health and well-being. I also wish they can find happiness soon!

I cannot thank you enough for covering this story because it needs to be get out there world wide this children abuse is happening To often it needs to stop. The children need to be protected from abuse, they also need to be educated about what is abuse because the abusers will make excuses place the blame on the one who is being abused. That is exactly what these to Women did to the children had them brainwashed in to taking the blame for the abuse. The young boy when he went to the neighbours house he told them it was his fault. Thank God he went for help they helped him, were there for him. I can’t thank them enough enough. The other neighbours didn’t answer, perhaps weren’t home. I am so happy they are out of there. I hope That child protective services have placed them in a very good home they deserve it after all they have been put through.

What is sad is this happens rather frequently with no intervention. I was told by a DA once 'just because they killed one kid does not mean they will kill the others' would not criminally charge nor petition the other kids to be removed from the home. 'Kiddie cops' are still considered low priority. The child that was killed in my example was drowned in the toilet, wrapped in clear plastic and put in a dead freezer in the back yard.

It’s unimaginable what these kids had to go through. If it wasn’t for the caring neighbor, when the boy asked him (in a very soft voice) to take him to the police station 😢. If it wasn’t for that brave boy, he and his sister, who was so thin & hungry, very slowly reached for the pizza & water . As far as the other 2 women (especially Ruby) are concerned, they can go to hell, for I care 😡.

The little boy said it was personal,😢. When I seen the little girl in the closet, it was so sad. She didn't talk and she didn't move. Like she was trained to do, that is months after months of abuse. They abused her into submission and took everything from her. Hopefully she'll be able to get it back and the mother will never be able to see the kids unless supervision is there.

One of the first stories in the Book of Mormon taught to the very young primary children is about how the end justifies the means. One of the characters in the story sneaks up on a drunk guy and chops off his head with a sword. He then dresses in the dead man's bloody clothes and takes off with some important genealogical records. The justification is that it is better for one man to die than for an entire nation to dwindle in unbelief. These stories become ingrained in Mormon children's brains, and combined with other bizarre beliefs inculcated into them over many years, could very well be a catalyst for the despicable behavior seen in some of the adult members.

It's absolutely HORRIFYING that these women felt the need to BUY ANOTHER HOUSE on OPEN LAND... IMMEDIATELY... to get these poor children to work HARDER and punish them MORE than they ALREADY were being punished. They were going to kill these kids. If R hadn't escaped they both would have died in the next place they moved to. Ruby took out $85k in cash for her and jodi to hurriedly be able to purchase their next torture compound. They wanted a place that was as far away from any other human so they could continue what they were doing and that the kids would have no where to run for help. This is so uncomprehensible 😢 those women were SO OVERCOME with evil that they were blind to what they were doing. They both felt justified in what they did. Those women are nothing but PURE EVIL. The parole board needs to see their intent of harming the kids further with their planned move, if R had not escaped, that would most likely have resulted in DEATH. They need to serve the FULL 30 years.

I think what was done to these kids was due to their Mormon beliefs but also because they're sadistic people. I was a Christian who went to a Baptist church for 15+ years, three times a week. l prayed most days and read the Bible often. There is no way l would have done what Ruby did to her children because my religion told me l should. And l couldn't do it because a therapist said to either. l saw someone involved in the case, said Ruby seems remorseful now and knows what she did was wrong. l don't think she's remorseful. When she was first arrested, she repeatedly said she didn't do anything wrong, then put a lot of the blame on Jodi. She got caught and didn't want to be the most hated woman in the U.S. so she said she was in the wrong. Let me add that Jodi is an awful, evil person as well. l hope both of them serve a lengthy amount of time for what they did. l wasn't able to have kids. l have always wanted a little girl, and to know Ruby was able to have her own kids and abused them is sickening and heart breaking to me.
