I honestly think necromancy on otharry was the winning line as you pointed out (I did miss it until mentioned, wasn’t obvious). Mana drain on vindicate was riskier but worth the bait for the counter (mana drain was the most punishing possible though, bad lucks). Thanks for recording such a high stakes league. Keep it up

Some solid drafting, even though I don't agree with some picks (for example picking the nth removal spell over Mana Tithe, which can be game winning vs combo decks). The gameplay probably suffered a bit from the tension; at least that's what came through your voice. Good stuff though.

Thanks for posting, that was fun (and painful! City of Traitors does, not, ramp you). Cutting the Jitte from the draft would have been strong (and good in the sideboard at least). Mind Twist would have been the best card in your deck. Turn four Twist is always game over. So wouldn't you play a card that reads: 3B Sorcery You win the game. ? With an alternative casting cost of 2B to at least bring parity on other occasions if not a slight edge?
Considering JTMS first pick in 2024!? Defintely not an LSV adept... Lol Also what do you think about taking two "card disadvantage" cards in the first 4 picks?
lol yea I agree with lsv that jace isn’t what he used to be but a lot of card advantage spells have been cut so I’m definitely higher on jace and if you are able to get into a ux control deck and resolve jace onto an empty board or survivable board he’ll still take over. Not too worried about taking 2 pitch cards early - I wanted to be proactive and disruptive, chrome mox and grief do both those things. Thanks for watching 👍

it's amazing how much more important drafting knowledge is than gameplay skill in vintage cube. Makes it a fascinating format. Less obvious than the m1 plays but just as egregious is pitching the vind to mox in m2 g1. We pitch the currently useless necromancy, turn 3 draw a land and vindicate triome likely just win

White was open cause its slow and doesnt keep up with competent drafters. Even the red aggro deck osnt thst good, its just good against durdle decks. With actual stakes on the line is was more then likely smarter to force reanimator after your start. Cant know you would see instant speed reanimation 2 picks after emrakul, but passing the dark ritual was the actual off the rails moments. Dark rit is still broken. If your in black already its often better mana vault.
The Reanimate deck tends to struggle without Entomb. Either first pick Entomb or pick up a big creature, then picking a route to either Reanimate or Flash/Sneak Attack is the common line. His deck was good, except for the City of Traitors, maybe the Chrome Mox, and not taking the Jitte himself to cut it at the least in a non-league draft. Edit: and not taking the Mind Twist. That might arguably be the best card for his deck aside from an on-color Mox. Turn three Twist is strong, turn four it's game over.
@@californiaplant-basedeater2761 ive found theres enough redundant looting effects that entomb isnt necessary, its more so optimal. Flash and mixing up the sneak/flash top end creatures has been surprisingly strong. Example: in uw control having flash+worldspine as an end game is really good. I wouldn't advise any of the equipment besides lavaspur and the other haste one, and both are best in a sneak/reanimate deck. Ive gone way down on mindtwist. Being able to get it off turn 1 or 2 for half their hand or more is good, but its often a dead draw outside the early game.
@@WordSonFoRealz I've played Mind Twist at least thirty times over the years in this cube and it always got something, and was never bad against me. That Mind Twist is bad late game... that's just an inside joke going around. It's usually devastating, and can be tutored for EOT if the situation is right, whereas no one is ever tutoring for a Thoughtseize, so the card just gets played more in the early game. He said he thought combo might be harder to pull off in this very competent top 8 draft. People will cut key cards from the draft as it's not a league. Look at him, he took a Necromancy. The deck I tried to put together in his seat was the Fastbond draw 7 deck plus the pack three Upheaval. The guy who got it got it all but still lost to him so some kind of low-key control deck is still probably best. I maintain that if he just played a Plains instead of the City of Traitors, and had cut the Jitte himself, and taken Mind Twist, that would all have buffered his percentage points. Both those cards destroy his deck. The round three opponent even seemed to bring in random dorks game two to equip to wipe/block his board and it was strong. His deck was still very good. That "white is open because it's slow", just not true. The Luminarch card used to be trash, now it's good. White red aggro is good, white black control is good, his deck was good. The guy won ten matches in a row to get there, and he sounds like he knows the format just fine. If he takes Emrakul, he passes Through the Breach and Worldspine Wurm. Someone might later cut Sneak Attack or another creature having seen those or taken them.
@@californiaplant-basedeater2761 idk what jitte does that any sweeper doesnt, besides being harder to get going. And being susceptible to those is a big reason creature decks arent very strong. In this interation of the cube its been better to go over the top with any of the powrtful synergies, hard to just call it combo, or overloading on disruption and "winning with a ham sandwich". Twist being less good each turn the game goes by isnt an inside joke, same is true of all discard effects, with the exception case being an actual combo deck like storm that tends to hold them till the combo turn if they suspect instant speed disruption. Sneak and breach both at 5 mana used to be traps and i still think theyre only good as a redunt part in a deck with cheaper ways to use the big creatures, the exception case in that one being a control deck thats using sneak as its ham sandwhich in games its already reduced the opponent to top deck miracle draw chances. The changes they made to the slection of top end creatures and flash making that trap into a real archypte has been one of the better things about the cube. Whites still pretty slow compared to red aggro, ritual storm and reanimator. Whites leaned more into a near prison archype with a lot of hate bears and unique removal effects. I haven't found people to be so aggressive with cutting cards. My guess is a lot of people still look at it like their drafting league because their used to it, but thats just a guess.
@@WordSonFoRealz He went 4-0, then 3-0 against other 4-0s, then 3-0 against other 3-0s against other 4-0s to get into that draft. It's going to be a very competitive draft, different from the other levels. Cutting will happen. Your points about Jitte (slow) and Twist (late game brick) do not sound true to me. Jitte was great against him, and Mind Twist would have been great against him as well, and card cutting can be stronger than picking an average card. He might have taken City of Traitors over Mind Twist, even. I, have, never, seen, Mind Twist not be good. Maybe one in twenty times it is blah, and many people tutor for it early to play it early, when it is good. And if he is up against a creature mirror, having Jitte in the sideboard is at least a decent option, but my main point on that one was to cut it. The opponent had plenty of mana to equip it, it was not slow, and it put immense pressure on him. Sneak attack used to be a trap? Sneak Attack has always been good in the Vintage Cube, for the past seven years or so as far as I remember. Sometimes a passed card can be a trap. That's true for anything. Flash and a couple big creatures have changed the format a bit for the big creature combo decks but most of your points do not make sense to anyone who has played the cube a lot over the years, which I don't think you have, making this one of the many worthless conversations about nothing in the comments, imo. Edit: oh you said why take Jitte when the deck can just lose to a sweeper? Because another creature deck got the Jitte and it was about to hose him, that's why, just like we saw. If he had a good opportunity to cut a wrath you'd hear me saying he ought to have taken that too.
