I listened to the nutrition advice online "eat until comfortably full" and when I did this, I naturally ate very little food. When we eat protein rich, fatty, nutrient dense foods, it can be so hard to eat enough. However, I am so glad I did NOT continue to "listen to my body" initially as my body was so used to be in a calorie restricted state for so many years. I'm not kidding 90% of people who I talk to one-on-one are not eating enough food and in doing so this dramatically negatively impacts their health. This is the video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_5VgHg6dnY4.html) you need to watch when it comes to making sure you're eating enough food in general...it is directed as a weight loss video but even if you're not trying to lose weight, you'll likely still find it helpful, as I was someone who was not trying to lose weight but still struggled to eat enough food. Take care my friends and keep honoring your body with nourishing foods!
The goal is to be in tune with your body's hunger signals. We should be able to eat when hungry and stop when full. Allow yourself the satiation and you won't feel a need to snack unnecessarily throughout the day. Trust that your body knows how much it needs. If you heavily restricted for a while, it will take more to satiate you. But trust the process. Once your brain knows that there isn't a scarcity of food, you'll be able to stop. Leptin and ghrelin (hunger hormones) respond great to meat and eggs. You'll find it difficult to over consume them. Satiation happens quick. Try eating 1000 cals of eggs vs 1000 cals of donuts. Protein/fat is much more satiating than carbs because of how our hunger hormones recognize them. Prioritize these foods. Also note: Calorie counting is a very new thing. When we ate natural diets, we had natural/healthy bodies. No one needed to count calories for weight management. Our hunger hormones are weight management. Allow them to regulate.
Fat is SO important. I think there are a lot of people out there trying to do carnivore that are just eating way too lean (or not enough food!), and they wonder why it isn't working for them. You've got to stop being afraid of saturated fat!
You need healthy fats to function. It's one of the biggest lies ever told to say otherwise. We burn first water, and then fat to process carbs and protein. The trouble is the unhealthy fats, like seed oils, don't accomplish what quality milkfat does.
This video was so well put together. You explained this in a way that I FULLY understood everything you said. I'm truly impressed and happy to have found your channel.
Low energy ✅hormonal imbalance ✅mental fog ✅dry eyes ✅constipation ❌persistent hunger ❌cold ❌irritability ✅❌ I don’t know what I need now. I’m sticking to carnivore for now. I do think I need more fats and less protein.
Ive been neglecting my energy sources fats / carbs by eating a high protein diet. Ive been wondering why Im exhausted all the time. Im going to try Lillies formula of at least 100 grams of fat per day plus addition carbs to equal my protein intake.
May want to peek down the vitamin B1 deficiency rabbit hole and see if any of that sounds plausible for you. I have recently done that and found some fascinating stuff. Check out EONutrition for some good info.😊
If you're carnivore then just use more butter, lots of it. I guess that's the main source of fat on this diet. For me I'm not carnivore so I put olive oil/coconut oil/avocado oil on everything instead😅 and honestly more fat has been so healing. Especially women of fertile age need it to produce healthy hormones!
I still don’t understand this push for extreme or restrictive diets. I am not at all convinced that carnivore is a diet most should adopt. I think that is almost certainly wrong. For one, if I tried that as an endurance athlete, I’d fall out and crash quickly. “Fat adapted” or not. If you’re lost in the sauce on all these different recommendations, my advice would be (provided you’re not diabetic, have PCOS, metabolic syndrome, etc) to return to the basics. Get 2-3 servings of veggies a day. 1-2 of fruit. If you like bread, superstar it and buy food for life brand bread. It’s flourless, way more nutritious and lower GI than typical bread, and is in frozen food aisle. Eat Whole Foods as much as possible. The fiber and nutrients will make a big difference to your health. This is slow motion medicine. Give it time. Make sure you’re getting enough healthy fats. Marine Omega’s are objectively superior to plant ones. Sufficient omega 3 levels are a strong predictor of lifespan. Make sure you aren’t nutrient deficient. Get some wheat germ and add to cereals. Buy a mag glycinate or threonate supplement. Common deficiency. If you don’t eat eggs or go outside a lot, take Vit D. Move a lot. Throw some d fermented foods in there. Kefir, kimchi. Emerging research continues to highlight how critical gut health is to overall health. You don’t need to do crazy diets. Most don’t, anyway. These basics are it. Think of the blue zones, the most tried and tested lifestyles and diets that lead to the longest lifespans. Nutrition is always contextual. I eat 3k+ calories and 300-500 grams of carbs per day. But I am also extremely active. I would give different advice to a diabetic, or someone sensitive to carbohydrates.
I can add bad sleep to the list of not enough fats signs: I’ve been dealing with bad sleep for awhile after going carnivore. I ate a lot of protein (a lot more than fats and carbs) and started waking up every hour or so and then couldn’t fall asleep at all. Yesterday I “accidentally” had a glass of 20% cream (because it was delicious and I couldn’t stop drinking it 😅), then went to bed and slept through the night, not waking up even once, for a total of 10 hours! I’m going to add more fats to my diet on a regular basis and see, if it fixes the sleep issues for good!
Yeah I used to wake up at 1 or 2 and couldn't go back to sleep. Started eating more fat and even will down a tablespoon or 2 of butter if I can't sleep and it helps.
Whats 20% cream? It sounds delicious! Is it the same as heavy whipping cream? My kids and I love that stuff…I give them cups of it. Lol They are so calm and happy when they drink it. I offer it to them all the time and about half of the time they will have some.
@@genesismccormack7540 Yes, that’s what I meant! Heavy cream that has 20% fat in it (whipping cream has around 33%). It’s delicious in coffee and just on its own!
@@LolaSteininger Dr. Elizabeth Bright talks about the importance of fat for women. Adding a stick of butter cured my perimenopausal insomnia i had for five years. I'm sleeping like a baby from day one of adding the butter.
You need at least 50/50 protein/fat in relation to calories. Preferably 50/50 in weight. But if you come off carbs too fast your body has no time to adapt.
@@martinsvensson6884 I think I need that too, I check 6 of these boxes (sometimes 7 with the cold). The hamburger I eat is 85%lean. I guess I need to buy ghee or something to add?
I’m laughing a little at your sweet corrections, regarding misunderstandings, but I know there are many people out there who are not life long food scrutinizers, or Nutrient Nerds 😂. I’m thankful that you are encouraging people to live purposely. ❤️ Well done!
I notice my energy dropping like a rock when my body fat drops below 10%. Ramping up the protein to make energy does not work for me and eating carbs makes me always hungry. My body wants fat.
I found that for me personally, that having too much protein compared to fats was still causing some extra stress on my body and I was still tired and my acne was not really going away as fast I was expecting. But once I tapered down my protein and added in more fats, I felt more mentally clear which allowed me to be more energetic and more mentally stable, and my skin and overall inflammation decreased. Still got some healing to do, but I’m determined to stick to this way of living. Thank you for this valuable information Lillie!
Just want to say thank you for all the information and help you offer. Above all else, thank you that your videos aren't as long as other Carnivore videos!!!yours is short and to the point. I find it a bit difficult to gety head around the American pounds, ounces, etc, but I get the point. Thank you.
olive oil is even worse its already extracted and has way more anti nutrients at least some of the walnuts pass through you and out and yes they are both bad
Also a fan of Lili from Germany 😊❤ Had very painfull periods lately, irregular cycle and also often tired. Looks Like I have to eat more fat. So happy I Just saw your Video. ❤
if you have trouble falling asleep/staying asleep, eat meat protein before bed. When I eat a small, maybe 4 oz, filet mignon steak before bed, I always sleep soundly.
I'm glad that's working for you but protein is hardest on the digestive system, that's literally what I have to avoid before sleeping or I don't sleep or my sleep quality is crap.
Excellent post Lillie, as always. Such clear, concise, & valuable content, every single time. I haven't checked in for awhile, yet every time I do your channel is up, Up, UP~ woo-hoo! I remember first finding it a few yrs back, & thinking how different the way you present information is, & how much I liked your way of approaching life. The more I listened, I realized how similar our backgrounds are, as well as what we chose to do coming out of all that. I'm 30 yrs older, & aware of the effort involved in forging ahead, despite the odds, & helping myself through helping others (retired social worker here). A lot of what is available now to reach people was not so much "back in the day"~ how weird I'm old enough to overuse THAT phrase, yikesAnyhow, point being, your own ripple effect outward has enormous impact & it's awesome to see & hear that happening. Grateful you chose to share your pebble in the pond, so to speak. A shiny pebble, a lovely pond.Samantha in AZ
All this is very confusing to me so i have to simplify it totally. I eat mostly protien , whatever fat is on the particular meat i eat, i keep my carbs less that 50 each day, stay away from most processed foods and soda, no fast food and all the rest of the macros and micros are a wash and let the chips fall where they may. I hope doing what im doing will help me cuz i need to lose a lot of weight. Thanks lily for your great knowledge though even though some confuses me. 👍
I started carnivore a year and a half ago, and started feeling much better in many ways. I didn’t have a lot of weight to lose, but lost around 15 pounds in 10 months, and my abdominal fat flattened out. Since then, my weight kept back up 10 pound and the abdominal fat started puffing up again. I’m fairly strict, but sporadically eat a couple mulberries or a loquats off the tree (in ketovore range) when they are ripe. I also have two cups decaf in the morning, one with iodine drops. I feel like I need to go back and review what I’m doing. Thank you for the guidance.
OK Lillie, great video as always, I'm so learning how this works, BUT...... I'm one of those that is obese and working on losing weight. Tried carnivore very briefly and epically failed... I probably should have "eased" into it, but I will try again and get it right. I do love what you're talking about here, but I'm truly a carboholic, along with fatty foods anyway, how would taking LMNT elect. help me? Won't I overload on sodium?? For some reason, I'm really afraid of the 1,000 mg.s of sodium in these drinks. That part scares me. I already have some swelling issues around carrying all this weight.....not sure what to do going forward. Then, I look at Dr. Eric Berg's electrolyte powder and he's got the opposite with much less sodium and much more potassium (1,000mg), which most of us are deficient in anyway. So, which is correct?? or are they both good for different reasons?? could use your wisdom here....
Great info. One old thought that has been debunked, though, is needing carbs for running, etc. Protein and animal fats will definitely fuel these requirements without carbs. Thanks, Lilly 🙂
5:08 Your calculation is wrong. 140 lbs corresponds to 64 kilo grams. So your daily protein intake should be 64 grams - not 140 grams. Same mistake at 5:47 (typically imperial system issue)
@@repentjesusiscomingsoon1529 1 lb = 454g. 1 kilo = 1000 g . 1K = 2.2 lb. 1/4lb hamburger = 113 gs of weight = 14 g protein. Your welcome. The internet can help you; a wealth of knowledge to be had. :-)
Lillie! My diet is similar to yours, i have a bit of yogurt and fruit and i drink raw milk (have had raw milk for almost 6 years now) recently my facial skin became so dry and itchy and it almost looks like i have a small rash. Could i have gotten allergic to eggs suddenly? Ive never been allergic before but after seeing your video about you suddenly becoming allergic made me wonder if thats the result of my face. I dont use skincare so it couldnt be anything external.
Lily, very informative video, though there's a minor confusion in there. You first mentioned the ideal daly protein intake to body weight proportion both in grams, then as a mixture of grams and pounds. The 1:1 ratio (which is btw correct by most standards I've seen) is usually the one you used later (g of protein:pounds of body weight), which would be around 2:1 if they're both measured in grams.
Thanks Lilly 😘 Very helpful, and I’m gonna watch that “protein mistake” video next. You are the only one who has helped me understand macros without hurting my brain 😅🤗🙏🏼
well, i did feel slightly better on keto and carnivore, but i honestly feel pretty good too when on carbs and i like them a lot so im not planning to remove them from my diet anytime soon at least. im really just following a weston a price diet right now and hopefully for the rest of my life. keto and carnivore were mainly a very interesting and fun experiment.
8:41 I’m watching this video realizing that I have 6 of the symptoms of low fat + I have eye twitching as well!!! Let’s just solve all my problems today. 😉
I realized that I may not be eating enough calories. Hair falling out, low thyroid out and many nutrient deficiencies - just never very hungry. Going to try to do your balance and see if my appetite comes back.
Question? Fats do not clog arteries. My take is the damage done by bad foods is reflected in our circulation system. Clogs (a bad term) are caused by damage that is calcification or scabbing of the walls.
Most everyone who turns to high fat, carnivore etc really complicate it. Its really quite easy and very uncomplicated and most have excuses. If you follow the simple method most everyone will benefit. Most actually dont know what is involved in eating this way
Curious does it matter if my goal is strictly to be healthier or if the formula also works equally well for body recomposition and muscle building? I'm very interested in booking calls with you just wondering if it matters that you are way younger than I am therefore haven't experienced menopause etc? Thank you for all you do ... truly!!!
Frankly i don't know what to do anymore. I've been listening to Jay and Mike and Ray Peat way of eating and the science is also amazing. One is on carb fuel and the other one fat fuel carnivore. I want to heal so much. Both claims that's it's THE way. I just can't eat meat and fat only, i've tried and tried again but it's not working i find it so hard to stick to it. If i could do a bit of carbs with fruits and eat my butter and meat fat and good meat i would be happy but only meat and fat it's not working for me, to restrictive
For one the first 4-6 weeks wean yourself off carbs week 1 do 150 carbs a day week two 125 week 3 100 week 4 75 Week 5 50 week 6 25 than week 7 none this way you ease yourself into it it’s what I did but I also fasted 1-2 days a week in the beginning it helps with cravings after 4.5 months I was down 102 lbs and the pinnacle of health now a few months more and now I’m body building on carnivore and it’s amazing!
Are bodies don’t work exactly the same. I was vegetarian for 20+ years and switched to carnivore, which improved my health immensely. Only you can figure out what’s best for you. Trial and error. 🤷♀️
I want to say two things in the beginning: One, I am carnivore and I do very well this way. Two, I understand not everyone is good with it. Here is what I would suggest: Try both approaches for a prolonged time. You might have to force it in the beginning, but only this way you can be sure what works. Make sure to have a transition period. I always ate a lot of meat so it was easy for me. If you ate lots of plants and carbs before, it might be more difficult. No shame to supplement while transitioning, i.e. electrolytes, maybe magnesium, maybe folate if necessary. I did when I startet, now I don't need it anymore. Stick with it at least three months, see how you feel and if you can keep it up. Seems this is the time you need to adapt mostly to the new lifestyle. If it doesn't work add some fruits and non starchy vegetables. 80% carnivore is still pretty good. If that fails do the same approach with the Ray Peat Diet. Again with a transition period. In the end, all that matters is, if you feel good and you can sustain it long term. I wish you the best of luck on your journey. 😊
Brother if it helps I was carnivore for over a year and started doing more RP inspired stuff like Mike and Jay and I feel much better overall. It's not one ultimate diet or bust, there are many facets to health and I find Ray to fully detail it better than anyone else
I've noticed since I have lost over 140 plus pounds I can't regulate temperatures like I used to. Even keeping my fats up. Right now, middle of summer, that's not a problem.
Question! It looks like the thumb nail of the video shows a darkness under the eyes as a symptom, but you did not touch on that. Can that be a symptom of not enough fat? I ask, because I experienced darker than usual under eyes for a while and didn't know why I looked so rough, however, I've returned to normal. I never linked this thought together until now, but the only thing different I have done is try to be intentional about adding in healthy fats to my low carb diet (where as before I avoided them because of the calories).
Lillie, I'm in the UK, would like to train in a nutrition course, with the idea of educating young adults, maybe getting a slot in local schools. Kids here easy a pack of cookies for lunch with an energy drink! Can you you recommend a course?

I agree that that is a very good rule for most people. I started tracking because I realized when I did track that I've been eating under a thousand calories a day for like 35 years. 😬 I have to eat like it's my job to even get up to 1300 calories a day. I hate the feeling of being full and came from a childhood of food scarcity where I was encouraged not to eat so it just became a habit to do omad. I no longer do that, I force myself to eat three times a day. As long as I keep my calories up, health conditions all clear up and I lose weight and gain muscle. Not the typical thing I admit but it is my experience.
I was doing a ketovore type diet for years, and I'm currently pregnant. I'm at the end of my pregnancy, 36 weeks. In the last handful of weeks, I have started eating more refined sugars, carbs, and processed foods... stupidly. I blame it on cravings, stress, and anxiety. Prior to ketovore, I would binge and comfort eat. In the last week or so I've noticed my scalp is in sooooo much pain like I can't even brush my hair without it hurting significantly, rest my head on a pillow, or even touching it. Almost like when you've worn your hair up too tight for an extended period of time but far worse... I plan to get back on my ketovore WOE. In fact I started this morning. I'm hoping this will stop the severe scalp tenderness. Have you heard of this before, or has anyone here in the community experienced this? TIA
This is an awesome video again. I’m over weight about 20lbs. I tried everything high fat , low fat , fasting , PSMF and exercises. Nothing work for me. But enjoyed your video. I’m also 5 feet 2 inches and 130lbs .
Would you clarify, please: Under how much protein, at first you said 1g protein: 1g ideal body weight, but in your example you used 1g protein to 1 lb body weight (ie 140 g protein: 140 lbs). Thank you!
This is exactly what I needed this week! Thank you ❤I know I need more fat in diet. My vision has been suffering a bit - I will keep adding more fat and see what happens.
I ❤ you videos Lillie❤. I never tell anyone, " don't do, don't eat, or whatever". Not all of us are the same. Whaever you can, or can't do, is your choice. I only eat PHD/fasting. Thanks to dr. Ken Berry. But like i said: nobody is the same.
Since switching to more high fat food, my LDL cholesterol jumped 50 points in 1 year. I’m 49, 5’1, 114 pounds. Overall went from 240 to 290. Fasting Blood glucose was 100. I’m honestly not sure what to do anymore 😳
Thanks for the video, BUT, you've got your grams and pounds mixed up. You say one gram protein per gram of body weight, then in your example you say 140 grams of protein for a body weight of 140 lbs. Should be 70 or so grams of protein for a body weight of 140 lbs., right?
